Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

92% pass completion (second only to Scholes). 60% of those passes went forwards. Made 7 out of 8 tackles attempted. Over twice as many as the most made by a City player. It's safe to say he played better than Gareth fecking Barry.

Carrick's been consistently excellent this season.

He made some excellent tackles too.

Overall though, we couldn't compete physically with City. It was always going to happen, in hindsight. Giggs and Scholes, for all their gifts, are in their late 30s. Park hadn't started a game since late-Jan - I felt a bit for him, because it was a bad game to throw him in.

The biggest difference between the two teams was the contribution from Nasri, Silva and Tevez compared to Giggs, Nani and Park.

That and the composed defending from their experienced back four, compared to the slightly panicky way that Smalling and Jones passed the ball.

Yep and that's why we got our tactics wrong. Arsenal dominated city and that was without strong physical players but the right match of tenacity and talent. By playing park and giggs we allowed the likes of nasri and silva to come inside more because they didn't need to worry about us on the counter as much and we took away one of our big weapons with scholes in the team which is one of those long balls isolating one of our wingers against one of their fallbacks, nani got it a few times but the lack of good support from either jones at rb or park in the middle killer the attacks.

As I've said I don't think scholes and carrick could have done much more but the front four we picked compared to the front four they picked was the difference imo.

Carrick was our best player by a country mile. He was the only reason we somehow managed to stop most City attacks before it even started and he held onto the ball well when he got it. Made some vital tackles and interceptions. If only Giggs, Park and Nani put in the same amount of work...

Considering one of the criticisms often levelled at him is his bottle and ability to step up when the chips are down. He was brilliant. Really stepped up to the plate.

Yup, our best player on the day for me.

You need to take your rose tinted specs off.

City dominated the midfield after the first ten minutes and Toure, Nasri and yes Gareth fecking Barry were all better then carrick or any other united player.

I loathe the average mother fecker but I don't know what game you were watching if you did not think he was a major reason for there domination, in a similar understated way Carrick usually does funnily enough.

:lol::lol:

Yeah you're right.

Carrick controlled the game and united dominated, oh wait....:wenger:

Spastic football debating 101.

Disagree with a point by ludicrously exaggerating opinions that differ from yours and mocking an opinion that's never actually been expressed.

Did anyone say United dominated? Or that Carrick controlled the game?

What he did do, was play very well. To a lesser extent Scholes did too.

The reason City bossed midfield for long stretches was the contribution from their wide men, Nasri and Silva, who both tucked infield and had far more of an impact on the game than Nani and Giggs. Combine that with Park's completely ineffectual performance compared to Tevez and it's not hard to see how we struggled despite - not because of - Michael Carrick.

Played well, felt a bit sorry for him that he was surrounded by mediocrity(minus Scholes) Now, imagine if we could just get someone good who isn't 37 to play alongside him.

the problem yesterday was that city were much better than us without the ball...
Barry and toure dominated - from our central midfielders, only carrick is able to tackle. Nani, giggs and scholes are not very good at tackling or when the other team has possession while park looked clueless.
Looking back if i was fergie i would have considered starting with one of scholes and giggs out.

Not a hindsight issue, a lot of us were against playing the two of them in the same lineup days before we saw the team sheets.

Perhaps valencia and young instead of giggs and park. Then i d bring on giggsy later on in the game.

My thinking was playing Rooney in an attacking midfield role where he would see more of the ball, Nani and Valencia either side of him, Scholes and Carrick behind him shielding the defence and Welbeck up top.

Would probably have ended badly but there you go.

How the hell did Evra get 12% that's the real question there.

Still it's nice for a player to finally get the recognition he deserves. He's had a lot of undeserved stick down the years.

He's going to be increasingly important for us over the next few years.

Evans, Valencia missing.

Wait, looking on the manutd website it appears those votes were for Man of the Match against City and nothing to do with fans player of the year at all.

That seems more reasonable. I refuse to believe that Evra would have received 12% of the votes. Even Ferdinand at 19% seems a bit strange. You'd expect Rooney to, if not win it outright, be very close to Carrick. Those figures wouldn't allow for that.

I loved his forward runs

Yep, thought he was brilliant in the weekend. Signing another defensive-minded midfielder would enable Carrick to make is beautiful forward runs on a more frequent basis. He has a very dangerous shot on him, and it should be utilized better. His crossing is good as well. He was all over the place on Sunday - in a good way.

The thing about Carrick is that he does his job without any fuss - he plays the simple pass, and once in a while he makes a 50 yard pass straight onto the laces of the winger and we think "why doesn't he do that more." This season we have also seen him being more attack minded, getting into good attacking positions. He is actually deceptively fast once he gets up to speed, and he also has a good shot and fine technique. Sometimes, he slows the play down too much as he isn't the most agile person on the planet. To me though, he has been very, very good this year - and the fact that United supporters still criticise him just tells me that they are completely mindless mongrels that should probably support something else entirely.

He still doesn't have the raw power though. His game is technically better than most limited DM's and it is required to play in our fluid system.

Would love a big imposing DM doing to work for him and free up his movement. I said a couple of seasons ago I wish Fergie would tie a ball to his leg and make him go everywhere with it for the entire off season. Encouraging anyone to try and get it off him wherever he goes.

Milner and the virtually perma crocked Gerrard are somehow in. I thought Roy would have had more appreciation for a game reading CM.

I can't really see how he's not made it into the England squad to be honest. He probably should've been a starter for them. If you don't agree with that though, then I still don't think there's much debate that he should have been in the squad nevertheless.

What's even more shocking though is that Henderson has managed to make the stand-by list ahead of him as well.

I said in the other thread. Its not a shock. He hasnt played for England for 2 years. I think Roy's first squad after the Euro's will be far more revealing than todays

I mean, 2 years ago, you could make a reasonable excuse for him not making international squads. He was inconsistent and his form at times was insipid. But after the season he's had?

I've never been one to take much stock in the whole "England don't appreciate technical ability" line, but I understand why people believe that now.
