Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

He and Scholes were quality today and I think were let down. People saying we need a completely new midfield are ott. We need another defensively strong player cause Fletcher is out but if we'd had, had either Clev/ando/Rooney in Park's role today I think things could have been very different.

Carsick was great (as usual).

If he doesn't make the Euros squad because of players like Barry and Milner then :wenger:

Your grasp of football is as poor as your grasp of politics.

He did very little to separate himself from the herd, we can talk about politics another day. Leave your misplaced liberal arrogance out of the football forums. Yet again Carrick failed to perform when he was closed down, unfortunately that's what distinguishes him from world class central midfielders like Scholes. Xavi and Iniesta.

I thought he was one of the few players that could hold his head high as he came off the pitch.

I think it's fair to say evra like his namesake has poor grasp of reading the game

He was okay tonight, but I do agree with you to an extent. He struggles to perform when pressed and that's why he's not a top class midfielder. You're being too extreme with your analysis of him here though.

Leave your nonsensical opinions about football out of the same forums and it's a deal.

He was probably our best player today, along with Scholes and Rio. Accurate passing as always and put himself to make some good tackles.

Needs to be more direct with his passing though. And quicker as well, sometimes he holds onto a bit much and slows down the tempo.

Carrick was great again tonight, and probably our player of the season. He can hold his head high.

I will say though that his lack of pace is a weakness that is exploited often by the better midfielders we come up against. Once there in behind him we are exposed badly.

Players like Park Ji-Sung are lauded, revered, and have songs sung for them.

Carrick receives criticism from simple-minded fans even when playing well.

The mentality is wrong.

It's broadly accepted outside of this forum that Carrick doesn't deal well with being pressed, that was obvious tonight whether you care to admit it or not.

Mate whilst I'll agree that's been an issue in the past, today it wasn't. He did as much as he could, if everyone around him is playing terrible he can't change that, no one can.

It's the same ott reaction whenever we lose a big game, or any game, blame the central midfield. Again there's only so much they can do. If the likes of Rooney, Park, Giggs, Nani can't find each other with passes/keep the ball etc then you could have Xavi in there and the same thing would happen.

Another good game from Carrick.

Scholes was better than he was against Everton but not quite on his game. We were horribly out-numbered in midfield, though, with Tevez dropping deep and Nasri/Silva tucking in.
To be honest being out numbered wasn't our biggest problem. We just lacked the pace in midfield to do anything to them whenever we got the ball.

I personally think he was our stand-out performer tonight. Seemed to be doing his, Scholes and Park's defensive duties all at the same time and kept on battling when players like Scholes were going backwards.

It was never going to be a creative role for him today but he did his job very well. It was only when he had to push up that we saw Yaya in the more advanced threatening positions. And how quiet was Silva?

We just need to find him a 38 game-a-season partner!

This. He can do the job, he's the one midfield player we've got who is in his prime and he's had a very good season. We just need someone who complements him right. With him and the right partner we can go to City at play 4-4-2, which will make a huge difference.

Lack of quality more like. Surely not out-numbered. Our CM is nowhere near City's level. Needs to be adressed quickly, but that's nothing new anyway.

Really? Depends what you mean by central midfield. I don't think Scholes and Carrick were poor by any means, but it's hard to deal with two midfielders, two wingers who come inside, not to mention two strikers that drop as well. I would say the bigger issue today was Park who played ahead of them, and the trio of Giggs, Rooney and Nani who've collectively and individually did nothing today, even when they had the ball. We had plenty of the ball in the second half, the midfielders can't be expected to do everything. In the same way Silva/Nasri are the main creators for City and the likes of Barry and Toure give them the platform to work with, scholes and carrick gave Rooney, nani, park etc the ball, they just did nothing with it.

He was quality, didn't deserve to be on the losing team. Even went with Yaya a couple of times and more than held his own.

Very impressed with him tonight (even the type of United fan that don't have much time for him were impressed when I was talking to people after).

Well Barry was much better tonight. MOTM although I thought Toure was better.

How was Barry better? All you can really say is that he got forward more. He kept his position well enough and shielded the defence but that's all. That's not enough for Barry to have done better.:wenger:

Carrick was excellent. I hope people are realising that he can only do so much work though. Let down big time by our overall lack of midfield quality.
