His tackling and pressures far exceed McTominay's (Rabiot at 85th percentile for tackles, 90th percentile for tackles won, 98th percentile for defensive 3rd tackles, 92nd percentile with successful pressures, 93rd percentile for defensive third pressures, 87th percentile for passes blocked, etc).
McTominay with these stats has 55th, 24th, 82nd, 22nd, 56th, 49th (in order).

Defensively, Rabiot even in a shit season like last season is on another level to McTominay. And if you look at every other season with Rabiot, his passing is consistently very good, but unadventurous (or if you look at PSG where he actually played as the deepest midfielder pretty often, his progressive passing was very good as well).

See for yourself! Go through the seasons. Rabiot's defensive stats have always been good. At Juve he didn't play in his best role, but his defensive stats were still good, and his passing stats were generally very decent, just not progressive. And he didn't give the ball away constantly. His ball carrying is what fell last season for whatever reason (but still had better ball carrying than McTominay).
Well whilst it is true to say he was better at psg, and it’s because he is played out of position is not right either.

at juve he ia playing in his preferred position, he maybe a better dim, but previously never wanted to play there. He has never been a progressive passer, his stats may have been better at psg for passing but I wouldn’t put too much store in it. If you have to go back 4-5 years to find a time he was good at that maybehe has just not kicked on.

also saying we should just ignore last season is disingenuous too, this is a player looking at 15-16m euros per year. I think it’s reasonable to be worried, and that he comes with no certainty of ever getting back to 2/3 years ago never mind 4-5.

he is more talented than mctominay, whether he can turn that in a a whole other game. Having a guy on even 3 years with no recent track record as good in his preferred role is definitely a debate

Is he better than anything we have been linked with, yeah, but people who think we are getting fm2015 rabiot will be calling for him to go.

Left midfielder, it kind of makes sense if you consider the facts that Rabiot can do it in emergency capacity and unlike what some people will claim he actually tries.

How do you mean?

I'm guessing Rabiot at LM doesn't look like a traditional LM does, probably closer to Matuidi at the World Cup? Is this a tactic Allegri uses to clog up midfield?

I know people try to paint Rabiot in a certain way and he is capable in attack and carrying the ball, but to me LM just wouldn't suit him at all.

Pretty much, it's a bit like Matuidi. And yes it doesn't suit him. He can do it to some extent but you are not really putting him in a role to shine, it's for team balance and to the detriment of the player.

Things like this, along with 3 managers in 3 years probably hasn't helped him and other players there. Probably a similar situation to ours.

Like Julien Laurens said, I think there's a player in there. If, and a big if, we unlocked his potential, we could be talking about what a bargain he was for us. If people saw the player at PSG in our midfield, they'd be in awe right now after these barren years. It's just whether we can get that out of him.

Let's wait and see. You sound like you're just trying to put a brave face on it to me.

Juve are seemingly very happy to sell. Why are we only now going in for him then? Why not 8 weeks ago?

It's a panic mode signing if there ever was one. He will be the next player everyone on here moans about that we can't sell.
I do try to find the positives and sense in every signing. Happened to have found quite a few reasons to be optimistic with this one and changed my initial negative stance on him.

Why were united not interested him before? Because our recruitment is tragic. I've long since stopped wondering why we haven't gone for a player early rather than late. Not worth the headache. Rabiot is a player that makes perfect sense as a Frenkie partner, he's not a Frenkie replacement stylistically. Except there was 0 talk that we were after anyone with any actual ball winning qualities. Passed on countless players. My gut tell me that we are after one now because Ten Hag might have wanted to see them himself up close, saw how tragic McTominay was in the 1st game, and pivoted to need a ball winner urgently in addition to Frenkie (if we even get him). Could be he was giving Garner time and decided he's not good enough. We'll see what happens there.

Yeah, might be someone we want to sell in a year or 2. But I'd rather try and fail with a DM for once rather than stock up on more #10's like SMS or LW's or CB's. Might just work out.

If you're right I will happily admit I was wrong however I'm confident he will just be another mediocre player in a sea of mediocrity.

Let's wait and and see.

It’s fair to have an wait and see approach. I have always rated the guy, think he can be a huge success for us as a 6. Not played at his best position at Juventus and sometimes players don’t work out at a club. I am excited to get him.

Could easily be, I'm just not hating this transfer as for once it at least addresses our needs if it hits. Eriksen, Martinez, Malacia were all decent in their own ways, but none necessarily addressed our needs. This at least is directly an answer for the ball winning/defensive issue in our midfield.

I'm happy as long as we don't get taken advantage of financially.

I wish I knew who we should bring in.

I think we need to recruit the type of player Dortmund buy, we need to start creating stars instead of trying to buy them. Because at this point, with filthy rich 3 oil clubs to contend with, we're going to be out of the top 7 targets for players.

Real and Barca are the most attractive to players due to their success and fanbase. PSG, Bayern, Liverpool, Chelsea and City are all more appealing to players, we don't get players that they want right now. And Newcastle is a wild card we need to worry about as well.

That being said, we're a very appealing place to play football for big money, and if we're careful we can create a squad like Liverpool have, with players who didn't come in on top money but developed into top players who were then given top contacts afterward.

And we may need to let a Mane go at 30 at some point as well instead of break our budget.

At least it would be attempting something new instead of expecting a midfield that was lucky to get carried to top 6 to suddenly perform better than half the midfields in the league

Personally the only one of them I'm super confident will be seen as a success is Eriksen. He's got class we've all seen for a while.

Malacia, Martinez and Rabiot (if he joins) I think are definitely risky. Could end up being top signings or flops.

We definitely haven't improved where we needed to most either I agree.

You just hope he is a player that matures late. He seems to have all the ingredients to be very good but has never quite reached elite level consistency. There must be a reason for that. I doubt he’s going to do that here although I expect he’ll have a few good performances occasionally. I’m not sure what I make of his mom being his agent. That’s a bit strange but who are we to judge.

Fred is fine as a second choice CM. He's got some very good qualities but a few major flaws. Mctominay is rubbish. Should be sold immediately.
Of the two Fred is definitely the better midfielder but both are well below what this Club needs. Sure we can't chase the elite but surely there's someone out there that's an upgrade on both.
Rabiot I'm not too sure of. In fact I'm not too sure of anything anymore. The Brighton loss really put a spin on things.

I felt really sorry for Fred when watching him trying to battle with those white-shirted players surrounding him for the first, second, third ball which are always in the air.
To disclose, I rate Fred and McT highly.
You are joking and its an ok joke.

Why the hell can’t we find an up and coming player who does the same things but is on a much lesser salary and less of a risk? We have 5 million scouts. What the hell do they do? I know we sacked a couple but we have a load of supposed experts seemingly doing nothing and earning money for doing so.

We never learn.

I’d say bissouma would of been an upgrade on both. For just 25m aswell. That would of left us enough to bring in maybe another mid or an attacker.

Emergency signing a known feckwit with a seriously deranged entourage.
This has clusterfeck written all over it.
Maybe, just maybe ETH drills him (and maybe his mum ha ha ha) into some sort of shape but probability says this will be a disaster.

What do our french posters think of rabiot?

he iz ze epitome ov ze french footballeh. you can find him wandering around ze pitch wiv a rolled up cigarette in one ‘and an’ a small glass of ze ‘ouse red in ze other. his motheh sit on a bistro set on ze sideline an’ barks orders at ‘im like a dog.

Feck him and his leech of an agent, Let's forget about signing anyone who isn't here to play for Manchester United.

Let's focus on ETH strengths which is developing kids Zidane, Savage and Hannibal. Yes we'll be laughed at has results would be piss shit but who knows this kids might surprise us.

Don’t mind him coming as a filler signing to strengthen our squad but if the idea is he’s coming to win us titles theres no chance its close to enough.

Alright Frenchie

My concern with Rabiot is he is better as an attacking midfielder really

Read this in the voice of Rene Artois from Hello Hello.
One for kids there.

What happen to meeting a player in a service station offering his family a house and a fancy car and signing the deal there and then.

Sick to death of this new system. Takes ages.

perfect. if we fill the starting 11 with attacking midfielders it will mean we’re always on the attack and our opponents won’t be able to attack us. we will win each game we play. it’s good to finally get a manager in who knows what he’s doing.

Is it me or does that tweet make 0 sense? We've got a meeting scheduled with his mum but it's not time for us to meet with his camp?
My first thought was Murtough landed in Turin to see her but she put him off for a copule of days
