By all accounts we were in for Rabiot but he simply chose Juventus over us. It happens.

Even the current bigs don't rely on a single factor, they all offer a lot of money, and 7m per year isn't a small wage, but they also offer better teammates, better chances of trophies, more stability, some offer better lifestyle for the family too and a more recognizable manager. If you want to compete for the better players you need to bring a combination of these things.

I’m not a sales man, but I have sat at negotiations. The main thing you need to do is believe in what you are doing, and believe you deserve and will obtain the objectives of your negotiation. There is always a way.

It’s different to do that with a player like Sanchez who was almost over the hill, than with a player like Rabiot entering the prime of his carreer.
BTW, Pogba isn’t gone yet. He is under contract for 3 more years. We’ll see what happens to him, but I still think he stays for this next year.
I don’t see us as completely shit. I see us as a very good team with some weaknesses that need to be identified and fixed. One of those weaknesses is that we miss a player like Rabiot in midfield to play along with Pogba. RB is another weakness that must be addressed. We also need a CDM that’s able to run to replace Matic. A real RW player. And ST to replace Lukaku but only if he leaves.
This is my big big concern, considering that at almost every opportunity we make a wrong turn. We are actually a sinking ship at the moment. We have scarcely any world class players, we cannot attract or afford many more. Our best two players could well leave. I do believe we are screwed.
I have a feeling we already got this guy in bag, Juve cant compete with us when it comes to signing bonus or salary an also Rabiot got more chances to be in startingX1 compared to Juve as they got cluster of midfielders.

Sorry but I disagree. We are shit. Well, in terms of challenging for trophies. How many of our players would make it to the first team of our rivals? Probably DDG and Pogba (both who want to leave). Our team is much closer to Wolves and Leicester than City and Liverpool and we don't seem to have a plan of fixing things at all. If I were a player, why would I choose United over other big teams?
With the way the summer is going I am worried that we'll be closer to West Ham and Newcastle, and looking on in envy at Wolves and LC.

Please read my post again and try to count, as I highlighted 4 players, and 5 if Lukaku leaves:
1. Rabiot
Replaces Herrera who was one of our better players
2. RB
Replace Young, who can’t defend and can’t cross.
3. CDM
To replace Matic who can be good on his day but barely was running by the end of the season.
4. RW
Lingard has to be either sold or sent to the reserves. Mata is never a RW.
If Lukaku leaves we will need another ST, so he would be a 5th player. But if we decide to keep him the real problems are those 4 positions.
Yes, I know people think Smalling needs to be replaced. But we can wait a year for that position. It’s more important to upgrade the midfield and in particular the CDM position to shield the defense. We’ve seen many goals last year which originated from a midfield turnover or where midfielders just stood and watched allowing attackers to charge our defense.

We don’t need all our players to be world class. But we do need to hang on to our best players and improve 4 positions: CM (Herrera & Fellaini left), CDM (Matic losing his legs), RB (Young is way past his expiration date) and RW (Lingard).
What you propose makes sense - so unlikely to happen. I doubt we will go big for a RW this window, probably wait a season for Sancho. Think we will go for a CB instead of RW.
Why do people think Rabiot is a Herrera replacement? Herrera played dm for us and was great because he was a great ball winner and covered a lot for Pogba and Matic. He often played the deepest of the 3 under Ole.

And how do you know Ole wants the team to play the same we way have been?
Firstly, that’s like not my point at all. My point was if we want to replace Herrera like everyone says then Rabiot isn’t going to do it.
Secondly I don’t think we’ll play the same way and that’s an entirely different reason why I don’t think signing Rabiot makes sense. If we are going after Bruno which it seems we are and we really don’t want to sell Pogba then it makes no sense to get Rabiot because apparently he wants to play no 8 and the two aforementioned are no 8s so. You can’t play 3 no 8s in a midfield.
If we get Bruno it would be stupid to not focus our efforts on getting a DM, that should really be our focus. Ole has said apparently he wants an attacking mid and defensive mid this summer so there’s no way Rabiot comes if we get Bruno.
You need a squad... I don't think we will but to me it makes sense to go for both since Rabiot is not a large expenditure, and he is also versatile. We don't have quality depth in midfield and thats a major issue. I would ship out players and get them both in myself.

Carrick was a completely different player to Keane but did his fair share in our last period of success. It's doesn't always have to be like for like as long as there is a plan things will fall in place but knowing us there probably isn't one
Sorry but this kind of thinking is exactly what got us into this mess. No sort of team planning just signing quality because quality is available. Yes to get to City’s level you need a lot of quality depth but you don’t go from us to Citys level in one summer. You don’t learn to drive by driving on the motorway straight away, you dont build a house by putting in the fancy artwork and sculptures in at the beginning.
City have assembled their current side over a decade, Gundogan was one of the last pieces of that side and he certainly wasn’t the reason they won the league or a big part of the side. He’s a luxury player.
You don’t build a side by signing luxury players first and that’s the issue we have now. We have luxury players before we have the core role players to get the most out of the luxury players. Pogba is a great player but he doesn’t perform because our team is so lopsided and lacking balance we can’t get the best out of him.
We shouldn’t just sign Rabiot because he’s free and available. It’s like when we had like 3 left wingers and no right wingers. If we sign Rabiot we’ll be so lopsided, when you have a player like that you will play them, how would he fit with the other players in his position. All 3 of Pogba, Rabiot and Bruno are too good to sit on the bench. It will cause us selection and chemistry problems. Besides the fact that none of them will play well anyway if we don’t fix our other problems such as dm and cb.

Actually signing poor quality and keeping around poor quality is what got us in this mess.
The majority of these players here need to be shipped out they have been failing for years.
My main point is Rabiot on a free makes sense even if we sign Bruno since Rabiot is a flexible player can play 6 and 8 just as good. If he doesn't want to come fine, but if he did and was happy to play both in both roles then why not.
No City identified a problems in an areas and went to fix it right away, Peps first 2 seasons a lot of players were shipped out. Its the shipping out of players that is really important, players that not only fail meet the standard but don't have the right mentality (it rubs off in the dressing room)
City signed 3 fullbacks in one summer, do not forget this. They did that because it was a really important thing Pep needed fixing.
We should sign Rabiot because other than Pogba our midfield options are not remotely near good enough, starting or even as squad options. Matic should be shipped out, Fellaini already has been, Herrera has also left. We need minimum 2 CM signings this summer regardless of what happens with Pogba
We should also go for RW and RB that goes without saying its not mutually exclusive and we should have the funds to be able to do it, if the club has the ambitions it claims to have

Report said 7m per year for 5 years plus 10 million bonus, not 7m total for 5 years. That is still only around 135k a week though which would be surprisingly low.
