This is exactly the problem.
In summer 2014 we had just finished outside the top 4 and had suffered a dreadful season during which we'd sacked the manager. The parallels with this summer are there, of course.
The difference is, in summer 2014 we were only 12 months on from winning the Premier League title and we'd been to three Champions League finals in the preceding six years. In other words, success was still fresh in the memory and the disastrous Moyes season could legitimately be spun as an aberration, a freak one-off, an insignificant black mark against an otherwise unblemished 22-year record.
In the post-Ferguson period, however, the world has now seen us roll the dice with six different managers in six years, repeatedly falling well-short of expectations (and the boasts of our CEO), while suffering numerous humiliations along the way.
Our status as a big, successful club is now entirely predicated on the period prior to 2013. With each passing year, that becomes more and more of a distant memory. United, once the byword for elite performance, are increasingly becoming synonymous with lavish incompetence and embarrassing failure.

Agree with that. I still think we can sign top or close to top players as things stand though personally. Rabiot is certainly achievable in my opinion. Just happened that a massive club on the rise has gone in.

Personally I don't think Rabiot is world class (Pogba, De Bruyne, Kante), but he's definitely the level just below (Koke, Milinkovic-Savic, Gundogan). He'll have to fight for his place at Juve, wouldn't be a starter for Real Madrid or Barcelona... but for us? Key player without a doubt, far ahead of anyone except Paul.
The guy is only 24 (still couple of years to develop and reach prime) and made over 200 appearances for star-studded PSG. We should have pushed hard for this signing, instead of allocating 5 million in annual wages for worthless Mata we could have offered 10 million to Rabiot (supposedly agreed 7m/y with Juve). The sort of signing that could convince PP to stay and give the fans something to be excited about.

He has always been in contact with top teams, it has basically been the same teams from the start, Bayern, Juventus and Barcelona.
Not seen anything other than people on here linking him to those. Regardless, I still believe we'd have a chance depending on circumstances and how much they'd want to offer. He's not going to change them like he would us. As it turns out, Juve want him enough though.
People on here linked him to those because the likes RMC mentioned it for the better part of the last 2 years. Barcelona actually communicated about it, they said that they only talked to Rabiot when PSG gave them permission.

Of course we can but as fans we probably need to accept that we are nothing else than a glorified version of 2012 PSG/City, we only have money to offer, we can't even offer an upcoming, exciting manager or little bit of glitter.
We can, but we will have to pay them way over the odds, see Sanchez. And then when/if we do get them we will only hound them out of the club, see Pogba.
United are currently a disaster, I believe we are properly broken as a club. I hope we are fixed sooner rather than later but nothing at all suggests we will be, so until then accept where we are. So many fans on this forum expecting the likes of Rabiot, De Ligt and Sancho, (all unrealistic given our current standing and the much better clubs who will want them), to sign for us while turning their noses up at Maguire, Maddison and Rice who are actually players who we could sign and would immediately improve us.
If Juve sign him then I can’t see Juve going to Pogba. If they sign Pogba then I can see us getting Rabiot. Can’t see both players play for Juve, there are way too many midfielder at the moment in their team.
There is absolutely no chance Pogba will go to Juve this summer. They just signed Ramsey to go with the players they have and its looks like Rabiot will join them as well. If Pogba leaves it will be Madrid Barca or Paris

Then we should start coming out publicly and saying that we’re not interested in player A or player B so this stops happening over and over, I’m fed up of players using a supposed interest from us to get a better deal elsewhere and them having no interest in playing for us anyway.
We have reportedly been briefing anyone and everyone for the last few weeks that we are not in for De Ligt (presumably started as soon as we realised Raiola had used us to get better offers from PSG/Barca).
I imagine we'll quickly start doing the same with Rabiot if the Juve rumours are correct.
Ornstein (tier 1) actually said (about month ago) that we are interested in him. I think we are really interested but Juve is just right now has CL to convince Rabiot.

I can’t believe we can’t compete with Juve for Rabiot. 10m sign on fee plus 7m a year, what a bargain. We could easily offer him 20m signon fee and the same or better salary than Juve; an extra 10m should be sufficient compensation for him being without Champions League for a year. But instead of fighting for a player like Rabiot who would instantly improve us, we are signing championship players for £25m. Unbelievable.

Have you ever stopped to think that some players (actually a lot of players) might actually want to move to a club to win trophies. I know it's crazy right. You would think all footballers would just be interested in the mighty $$$ and would all come to Utd.
Juventus are a massive club. Turin is a beautiful city. Hardly surprising to me that he would choose to go there.

2. We have signed 1 player from the Championship player and it cost us under 20 million
3. Every other player we are linked with apart from Aarons plays in a top flight league. Even then Aarons is a backup option.
I can see that. But there’s much that we can offer a player like Rabiot, we are also a massive club, and I can’t believe we can’t compete with Juve for a signing such as this one. I think the main ingredient we are missing is the clarity and determination to land a player like him. Who is really the one who is talking to these players to convince them to come over?
I am not disagreeing with your points we are run in a shambolic way. But the days where we can flex our muscles financially have long gone.What can we offer him? Seriously.

Fine Haram. We are still pursuing unproven players for £25m, while they sign a player that’s just at another level for €10m. That’s the point I’m making. We should be (or should have been) all in trying to land Rabiot instead of signing and pursuing unproven players.
