Januzaj leaves Old Trafford eager for more

Manchester United's 2-0 win over Crystal Palace was not so much a football match as an audition. If David Moyes is indeed still deciding upon his best starting eleven – and the changes since the loss against Liverpool before the international break suggest that he is – then Marouane Fellaini and Adnan Januzaj, the club's two Belgian talents, made compelling cases for their inclusion.

Januzaj, in particular, thrilled Old Trafford in a manner that Manchester United fans have not seen since Nani was last on song. Arriving on the pitch as a substitute for Ashley Young with a bit less than a third of the game to go, his elegant dribbling and movement brought relief to home fans who had seen their team take a one-goal lead and a one-man advantage, but then fail to stifle their newly promoted opponents.

Crystal Palace were superbly resilient in defence, as indeed they had been in the opening game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur, but Januzaj teased apart their back line with an ease that Wayne Rooney – who emerged from his torpor late on to score a fine free kick – generally lacked.

What was perhaps most exciting about Januzaj's performance was the ease with which he linked up with Robin van Persie: There was one moment when they combined for a short corner, and another when Januzaj found him with a backheel down near the left touchline. All of a sudden, the chasm between midfield and attack shrank to vanishing point. Januzaj, in fact, carried the ball into the No. 10 area with more purpose than anyone else had done before his arrival. His energy and distribution stood in stark and unfortunate contrast to that of Anderson, who seemed somewhat off the pace throughout.

Januzaj is only 18, but, after a performance of such assurance, it would be a surprise if he were not to be granted more regular outings.

Whilst watching the match did you at any time feel we were going to concede after the red card? And did you also think that a single cell amoeba would do a better job than Young? If you have answered yes to both my questions, then it was a no-brainer.

Fail.

Young was playing pretty well in the second half, making a couple of good openings just before he went off. And whilst we were comfortably in control, 1-0 is never a safe scoreline.

I'm not trying to suggest Moyes is some massive risk taker or that he did anything Fergie wouldn't have, just that it's silly not to be pleased that he gave Januzaj his opportunity, and that it suggests he's going to give young players chances.

Fergie is the one who instilled the Youth culture into the club. Stop talking non-sense.

No, he wasn't. Re-instilled maybe. The youth culture in the club goes back to the 30's with Rocca & Gibson, then Busby etc.

Agreed. Obviously it would be silly to expect earth-shattering brilliance from him every game, but it seems an odd response to a very good performance today to say 'expect him to be frustrating and disappointing a lot, guys.' Someone's trying a little too hard to seem level-headed, I suspect.
Eh? Just saying be patient with him. Football fans have a tendancy to have knee jerk reactions you know. Also the last line makes no sense whatsoever. I don't need to "try hard" to be level headed.

Also, given it's not my only response to his performance - I've already blown my load over his amazing performance today - it's not odd at all. If that was my immediate response or my only response you'd have a case.

Going off this performance, would you say it is more of a risk to start Young over Adnan in the City match? Now there's a question.

Wouldn't take Brightonians comments to heart mate he can't help himself sometimes!

Hope you're right because Valencia and Young can't possibly be better choices based on current form. At least give the lad a couple of substitute appearances when Valencia or Young keep drilling crosses over our strikers and into the stands.

He looked genuinely better than either of them today. If he can keep that level of consistency, there's no reason he couldn't.

Damn I'd love it if he started against city. I think he could handle it too.

Thought he looked quality. I hope he puts my prediction on about 5 appearances this season to shame, he's a lot more exciting to watch than the Valencia-turnfest, that's for sure.

My memory is saying one of Docherty's line-ups was the youngest ever to play in the top division at the time. I do have a shit memory but there's usually something behind it.

According to this Belgian journalist on twitter who covers all the Belgians in the Premier League says Adnan will sign a new contract until 2018.

It's not a 'reward', it's a shackle. He'd be foolish to accept.

Just had to bump this classic, by way of checking... did we ever get him that contract / chain him up?

If the mantra if you're good enough, you're old enough is adhered to.. big chance he'll be a first teamer by the end of the year.

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Januzaj admitted he was shocked to have played today and wanted to thank the supporters for his reception. He said: ”It felt great and I was shocked because I played 25 minutes and that was my first game."

“I think I did some good things but that was only my debut and I have to keep doing what I am doing on the pitch.“I appreciate the very good reception. They gave me a bit of power when I came on the pitch and I am very happy."

“I hoped to get a goal but I have tried to do the best for the team and set up goals.”Januzaj is in the U19s UEFA Champions League squad so won’t feature for the senior side on Tuesday and the derby against Manchester City on Sunday is a huge game, so it is more likely we will next see him play in the Capital One Cup game against Liverpool next week.

David Moyes was effusive in his praise for Januzaj after the game as well.“I thought Januzaj was great,” he said.“I praised him in the dressing room. His debut for an 18 year old was great. We’re pleased to have him.”When asked whether he wants to feature more for the first team this season, Januzaj said: ”Yes of course. I want to play more games and I hope I have another chance to play for the first team and if I do, I will give everything to the club.“My family was here watching me and I hope they will be proud.”

What's all that about, U19's Champions League? Didn't even know such a thing existed. This lad should be in the first team squad.

Love those quotes. Really hope he has a breakthrough season and becomes a proper first teamer.

First year of it. Our U19s play Leverkusen on Tuesday at 4pm (I think) should be on Eurosport.

Going from today's quotes and his attitude on the pitch, I think the work ethic is definitely there. It's great to hear that Moyes was thinking about starting him, that must give him such a lift.

Agreed, from what he has said he seems like a nice lad with a level head and good attitude. Are you watching ravel?

Some of us are getting carried away. Even the comparison to Ronaldo's debut is over the top, in my opinion. And I'm a big Januzaj fan.
