Adnan Januzaj

Revan is right on this his parents are Kosovar-Albanian and he apparently spends every summer at his family home in Kosovo. Seems to be in his heart but where there he chooses to play for them is another issue.

He meant it that Kosovo isn't a state only in Serbian alternate universe that's true) so term Kosovan doesn't exist. Let's not derail the thread more with nationalism.

If he chooses Belgium, will he make their World Cup squad for the summer? Wilmots chased him pretty hard for the last two Belgium games so he must be pretty sweet on him.

If he continues playing like this, he'll be a starter there.

Ronaldo in his first season or two wasn't as pacey as when he got a little bit more older around 2006-2007 IMO.

Januzaj as you have said has a better footballing brain and more awareness of what's going around him - I think that helps with him being able to fend people off the ball. He puts his body in front of the ball so the opposition can't tackle him as easily.

Ronaldo was quick and agile when he was 18, but not particularly fast. At that time, Giggs was still faster than him, and Overmars outpaced him at the age of 34. It was spending hours and hours at the gym and working on his speed that made Ronaldo one of the fastest in the game. He set himself some goals and reached them. Januzaj is a different player and should probably set different goals, but if he is able to do that and be as mentally strong, and headstrong, as Ronaldo, he can truly become a special player, as he is a special talent.

Wilmots seemed to piss Adnan's Dad off a bit, and Adnan said its his Dad's decision which country he will play for iirc.

Might sound pedantic but, ethnically, there's not really such a thing as 'Kosovar-Albanian'. That would be like calling Vidic a Zlatibor-Serbian, which is non-sense. Essentially if he really has a chance to play for Belgium than he should pick them over Albania (as otherwise he'd just be wasting his awesome talent with them).

I am an Albanian and have a Kosovo passport. I always introduce myself as a Kosovan or Kosovan-Albanian.

Thanks for the alternate universe jab, wasnt necessary. But as I have mentioned earlier, he should pick Belgium over Albania. He should even be picking Serbia (regardless of how rubbish they are at the moment) over Albania.

Relax, mate. I'm sure the likes of Hazard, Mirallas, De Bruyne, Chadli, Bakkali etc. will have something to say about that.

He'll be doing well to even make the squad, let's be honest here.

If he plays like he is, then only Hazard is a beter player than him (from those you mentioned). The other part is that he'll likely progress until the end of the season, his progress in the last 12 months has been insane.

I don't expect him to choose Belgium though (at-least not for now), and it would be bad also for the squad if he'll get an automatic spot instead of someone who has played and contributed that Belgium will be on World Cup.

Your passport is irrelevant. As Kosovo will never be recognised as a fully independent state, they won't ever have a team to compete, etc etc. So if Adnan is clever he will pick the team with the best prospects for him personally, which at the moment is Belgium.

If he feels more Albanian and doesn't feel Belgian then he shouldn't just pick Belgium because he might have more success with them.

He's in quite a unique situation though given the number of choices he has but the national team you represent isn't all about who might be more successful. I'm pretty sure Serbia wouldn't even figure into the equation.

You're welcome!

 Give me a fecking break!

Serbia are as rubish as Albania at the moment.

Yes they probably are, but Im just talking about any potential, future prospects which are a bit better than those of Albania, imo.

We were talking what nation Adnan is, so the passport is irrelevant.

Never? You're sounding a bit extreme here (like all Serbians?). They said that Kosovo will never be an indipendent state but ironically you're leader today are organizing Serbians to come and vote in Kosovo. Never say never, Kosovo will be in FIFA, and it's already an indipendent state.

It all depends if Albania can convince Kosovan young players to play for them. Until now they have been extremely shit at it.

I think Ozil pretty much feels Turkish and Podolski feels Polish yet they have chose to play for Germany. If you're OK with the country you were born (Adnan-Belgium) in I don't see a problem with that. But yes, ultimately it will be his choice. Well not true, it's gonna be his dad's choice which could be a bit shit, maybe.

They should definitely draw the talent and start utilising the young players but I can imagine how difficult that is. Plus unorganised, plus corruption, nepotism, no finances, weak domestic league, all that stuff. Serbia is the same.

These two and because they are incompetent are the biggest problems.

Janujaz should simply wait to play for England.

Finantially speaking (and because the potential rise of his brand) this could be the best decision. If he doesn't care for Belgium and Albanian FA continue being useless then I wouldn't be surprised if this will be the case.

Guys, get it together, firstly you're complaining that he shouldn't play for Albania because they won't won shit and then decide he should play for England?

Could as well play for Poland then.

I think it's pretty obvious that he sees himself as kosovan and he's waiting it out to see if they become fifa recognized. If he felt Albanian then I think he'd have chosen them from the start, as it is, he doesn't seem to care too much, which usually you don't have with what nation you represent. Picking what country has the best future prospects is just wrong IMO too.

I don't think he has to wait for FIFA's decision. As far as I know you can always choose for a new country, no matter where you played before. So choosing for Belgium or Albania now would not prevent him to play for Kosovo if FIFA would ever acknowledge them.

Really? I never knew this. I though once you decide that's it.

I think the referee gave Fulham a free kick against Adnan. How he came to that conclusion is beyond me. But yeah, given that the stamp and kick were unpunished (had to be unseen as there's no way the ref could excuse it) I expect something to be done about it, but the hasn't been too much fuss in the media which leads me to think they might just try to brush it under the carpet.

Dermot Gallagher on Talksport last night, said the ref would not have been able to see the incident fully and the assistants, one was one the opposite side of the pitch and the other over the half way line. He thought it was a red card.

We will see tomorrow (?) but something really should be done about it. Absolutely disgraceful.

No, not that simple at all. If you play a competitive game for a country, then you can only play for that country. It used to be the same for friendlies too I think but there's a big case in point right now with Diego Costa who's played in 2 friendlies for Brazil but wants to now declare for Spain for the WC. He's had to ask FIFA's permission though and Brazil's federation tried to block it.

Don't want to get in the middle of your little discussion in here, but Serbia really is better than Albania at this point. Serbia even impressed me more than Croatia during the group stages. They just lack the ability to translate it to results which is only a matter of time really when their squad matures.

Yeah, but as Kosovo doesn't exist in UEFA atm, it's a different situation isn't it?

This is correct. If Kosovo gets accepted on FIFA, he can change sides.

It's a different situation because both Spain and Brazil already exist as national teams. Kosovo does not (at least not as an official team that competes in qualifiers), so if they get recognized by FIFA, they would be considered a new country and players that would be eligable to play for them who may have played for another country before, could choose to play for this new country.

Wasn't there a player who played for 3 countries in his carreer because of new countries being formed/recognized: Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, and then Serbia.

Fair enough. I did not know that. I assumed even if Kosovo were FIFA recognised one day he wouldn't be able to play for them if he'd already played competitively for someone else. Your point makes more sense though, otherwise new countries would have barely any players.

Actually, is that the same though? Didn't Yugoslavia, then S&M (unfortunate abbreviation) become (renamed) Serbia? In FIFA's official records they count Yugoslavia's wins as Serbia's. So it wasn't a brand 'new' nation, like Kosovo would be. I think.

I think Januzaj should play for the company he identifies most with and not which one will give him the better international opportunities. He doesn't need to be in a great international team to still be extremely marketable, we offer him great opportunities as it is.

Anyone got a copy of the times article on januzaj today? Moyes been talking about him - says he will be a European No.10 long term
