It's not just signing ex players, but some ex players might help with experience. Still that wasn't the point.

You are ignoring the context and the level we are at, so what's the point of comparing when we signed Pogba when many saw us as a club just having a blip and level far higher than we are now? We are laughably poor in the first half of the season, salvaged something from december end to March and then lost it again.

Like I said, if we appoint Conte, Jose today/tomorrow I don't see any change in transfers.

Depends on how do you view the manager being part of the equation.

For example AWB is the one we are keen on that's clear and near signing him.

There are other players on the market that are looking to move around the same fee or less - Cancelo, Meunier. I can see Conte for example to be looking at the Cancelo type rather than AWB.

It's interesting approach so far - predominantly Premiership players. One can say it's down to the board, others due to the old Fergie model, which Ole might want to copy - invest mainly in local talent.

Oh wow there's been a lot of new comments on the Wan-Bissaka thread, there must be some new developments

'Ole is shit, Moyes was scottish, this is a big mistake, Einstein said'

Oh yeah I'm on Redcafe in 2019.
Yeah, it's not as if there aren't threads about Ole for this crap.

Conte signed for Inter and wants Lukaku. Won't be surprised if Conte would have gone for Cancelo as he wants wingbacks rather than fullbacks.

Woodward is just not able to conduct transfers and get them over the line. We will be lucky to get 2 more players in before deadline. He needs to step down now.
Unfortunately this is true. Almost ever transfer becomes a long drawn out process and he can't multitask or get good value.

He's still in over his head and hasn't improved in six years.

I don’t care about his past, it’s what he does now this season that counts. If we get a good window he has a chance. If we don’t get a good window he will be gone by Christmas imho
Completely agree. We are sleep walking towards failure in this window. I think it is now impossible to get the business that we need to done by the pre-season tour. So that's a another shortcoming/failure confirmed.

We actually have 2 weeks to get the business done for the start of pre-season and I do expect 2 or possibly 3 announcements in that time. I am more concerned at this point with who those announcements are because if it is just squad options we are fecked.

Agreed, and worryingly I don't think it would matter who we had in charge, the outcome would still be the same.

I actually have high hopes or this, it's just standard posturing from both clubs. We can't go straight in at a price we think they'll accept straightway, you have to try your luck a bit and then come up to a level both sides are ok with. They need the money and are clearly open to selling him so let's just have a bit of patience. I think it'll be something like £40 + £10m add ons

Unless another club swoops in once terms are set, I'd think this one is looking v positive.

Wan Bissaka won't be going on pre season for us anyway even if he signs up tomorrow. He's away with England u21's so will probably get a few extra weeks off.

Moving it over to this thread.

I don't think it would end Lairds career. It would certainly make it harder for him to jump into the first team and would require him to have a loan before seriously fighting AWB for his position. But realistically he's still at least 12 months if not 24months away from that stage of his career. I mean he's still playing in the U18s. But we would have too many young RBs at the club with Dalot, Laird and AWB. It frankly puts more doubt on Dalot than Laird imo.

Well except that both Laird and Dalot are versatile and can play multiple positions. Room for both as long as they keep improving. Young can't be around too much longer and Shaw is decent but nothing special. Plus we still don't have a proven right winger or a set of 4 solid, dependable centre halves...

I reckon we will get our man but will have to pay exactly what Palace want... i can't remember whether I rated him or not last season (saw very fe non-United matches last season)

Watching him now for England u21 v France. Already made a couple of great tackles and some great one touch passing.

50m including add ons isn’t a bad price considering our need.

My concern is his ability going forward which we’ve been lacking for some time. He’s no Trent Alexander Arnold

Does look a little clumsy when dribbling. But his general touch and passing looks fine.

The way he completely shuts down the opposition's left hand side is amazing. We would instantly be so much more solid defensively with this kid.

He will be an important player to initiate our counter attack as we have lacked a ball winner in our team even from defence point of view.

Hes almost certainly playing as a right wing back. Leicesters Choudary is dropping in to make a back 3 while he stays wide and then when France have possession, England form a back 4 again.

I would want a wing back to be alot better going forward for us but as long we have proper width from a right winger I can see him thriving there. Looked good so far in the first half

He's been ok. He's very fast and strong.

Quite basic in possession. No point in expecting him to beat players and whip in crosses for us.

Nothing to suggest he wouldn't be quite a solid defender for us but also nothing to suggest we should "pay them what they want or else we're a laughing stock ffs!!!"

That’s exactly why I want him

He’s extremely solid defensively but yeah isn’t an all action attacking full back.

Wouldn’t be too bad if we play James in front of him as it’ll free him up but not sure how much of life a difference he’d make offensively with Lingard and Mata in front.

That should be expectated from a fullback at a top club.

We are wasting time. Our first bid was £25m. They rejected it and they make it clear they won’t sell anything less than £50m. And our 2nd bid was £35m plus £15m adds on. That’s horrible negotiation skills. How is £35m anywhere close to £50m, it’s so obvious they will reject it again which they did. 40m plus 10m adds on or 45m plus 5m adds on should have been our 2nd bid.

We shouldn’t wasting our time, we still need to sign other players. Not going straight hit is fine but be more reasonable.

When he is not in a situation where he can demonstrate his exceptional slide-tackling, he’s a basic player.

Not sure if he managed to find a white shirt once in that half.

He's really good defensively but attacking play is lacking, Going forward he's more a link up player than someone who just beats his man and puts a cross in.

He isn't worth 50 million so they are trying to pay less. What's wrong with that?

I would recommend Specsavers.

Or perhaps the papers and media know feck all and are creating a narrative that will last throughout the summer as writing stories about United is the most lucrative thing they have, with us back and forthing with Palace. When in fact the deals already been done and we're not going to finalise or announce anything until he returns from u21 duties uninjured.

He’s one of the best PL full back out there in term of dribble or takes on last season.

Statistically he’s the best PL full back in defending last season. So it’s not “nothing to suggest”. There are evidence to prove it if you are willing to look at them.

£50m for likely 10 long years service not just for next season service. He has many years to improve his skills as well.

With the caveat that he is 21 and can develop that side of his game. Dalot cannot defend but I don't think we should give up on him rather we just help him improve.

I wonder. Defending can be learned. Attacking potential is a lot down to natural ability. I'm sure he can improve a bit but he's unlikely to suddenly improve a lot. Considering he was a winger prior to becoming a fullback we may be already seeing as much as we can expect from him in an attacking sense.

Luckily, attacking skills are easier developed than defending, which is often more innate in players. He's young, so at the very least he could develop a better cross and add some one on one skills to his locker as he gets older.

In a team which spends a lot of time defending, naturally you spend more of your time defending. He is a different player than TAA who whips in as many balls as possible but also has the comfort of VVD behind him. In a more attacking team i think WB will be fine attacking, he likes to drible with the ball more than Trent but im sure will will see more delivery from him when the intent is to attack and with the comfort of a solid CB behind him.
