Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

I think we can assume most of the people in this thread will have read the books. So let's just make a "rule" that if you don't want to get spoiled of anything that happens (or might happen) in future episodes, don't click the spoilers. This is already a spoiler thread, no need to spoiler what has happened in aired episodes.

And maybe tag the spoiler if it isn't very spoilerific (as opposed to the other way around, I expect there will be many more of those).

That isn't exactly a troll, nor was it intended as such.

But if everyone is going to get their panties in a bunch about spoilers for a series that has been out for over a decade, the joke is well deserved and I will gladly take a "trolling" infraction.

Oh you martyr, you.

Did you miss the part where this is a thread for Game of Thrones the TV series, not the books? Oh, most in here have probably read the books as well, but we discuss those sorts of things in spoilers not to spoil it for those who only follow the series, and want to discuss the latest episode.

I thought spoilers were allowed in this thread? What's the difference between this one and the other anyway?

Yes, it does seem rather chaotic. I suggest we just make the decision to organize it a bit, and a mod (I wonder who?) could edit the OP/name of this thread, and perhaps the other one, so there's no confusion.

I suggest we have this thread for very spoilerific talk. Basically Top's E and D. There's quite a few of us who have read the books, and that way we can talk about it as it relates to the show somewhere without having to watch what we say.

The other thread could be for people who are otherwise unfamiliar with the show, and follow it as it's aired. There's the ever present problem of people watching it when it's aired in different places, but we somehow managed with other shows. Maybe using spoilers until it's aired both US and UK (how much is the difference?) when talking about stuff happening in the latest episode.

Something like that? We have quite a few seasons to go, probably, might as well get this in order now :p

The first post pretty much explains it, Smashed.
Like with quite a few shows, there are various degrees of spoiling.

A - People who haven't seen the show or read the book
B - People who only watch the show when it airs on British TV
C - People who download the episodes when they air in the US
D - People who likes to know what happens next, so they read future spoilers on other forums
E - People who have read the book

Basically the people belonging in both group D and E have the Super Spoiler Power and could ruin the experience for everyone in the lower groups if they so wished. Which is why info about the book should be kept in spoiler tags.
Unfortunately, people seems to mix it all together a bit too much for my liking, which is why I'm going to stay away from this thread, if I can.

That still doesn't really explain why we need two threads. Surely the point of spoiler tags is so we don't need dedicated spoiler threads? If you open the spoiler tag and it reveals something you didn't yet know, it's your own damn fault

Honestly, I think this series probably needs two threads. I can see a lot of people at RedCafe seeing Game of Thrones as just their sort of thing, and we have an entirely separate group of people who have already read all the books. It only takes one or two accidents/idiots to spoil massively important bits if it's all in the same thread.

Can see Top and Nimic's point. If ever a show needed three threads, this is it !

:D

1. Can rename the other Game of Thrones thread - 'Game of Thrones - UK Speed'.
2. Rename this one - 'Game of Thrones - US Speed (Show Spoilers)'
3. Create a new one - 'A song of Ice and Fire (Book Spoilers)'

We're sorted.

For feck sake, I even made diagrams and shit.

If you just lump everything inside spoiler tags then that kind of defeats the purpose. I would like to see people's opinions on what has happened in the last aired episode but I don't want to know anything about the book.
And as we only have one type of spoiler tags and people aren't going to put a disclaimer above every single spoiler stating what it's related to, we have two threads.

In fact, we really should have 3: One for Group A, One for Group B & C and one for D & E like nMic suggests. But then that'd probably spatter the debate too much.

Still sounds like a convoluted way of doing it. And by convoluted, I mean 'clusterfeck'.

That said, I don't care as I haven't yet watched this and am unsure if I will even bother- so someone else can sort it :D

I have always regarded this thread for those of us that have read the books that like to compare book and tv things. Keep the tv show stuff in the other thread without discussing what happens next in that one.

I said in the op of this thread, discuss currently aired episodes without spoilers here, but if you want to compare to the books or say "i wonder will they do <insert plot here> the same way" etc, stick a spoiler on it.

I'm currently uploading about 21 MB/s of Game of Thrones..

Legal notice: Just kidding!

And where might you be doing such a thing? I'm currently getting a copy of a vile site by the bay to see if its the real thing before reporting it to the authorities.

The torrents of tv. It's private though, and I'm out of invites. Can't imagine it would take too long from the bay, though?

Yeah, its fast enough. No complaint really. Been following the feedback for the show - and its mostly positive. Slower paced, but introduces a lot of the important characters for the season. Waiting to the Syrio scene, lots of people talking about it.

For those that have read the books what is actually north of the wall and why does it need to be protected? But if it ruins the story for me then I don't want to know!

EDIT: Never mind just saw the third episode there. Loved it again, I like the Arya character I think she'll have an important role in whatever's about to go down.

Its not so much of a spoiler as it is backstory and has been mentioned on the show already on previous episodes. The wall was built by Brandon the builder (ancestor of the Starks) to keep the white walkers and the wildlings at bay. The white walkers have passed into myth over the ages, but the wildlings, wild tribal folk who are not part of the Seven Kingdom's are still a real threat north of the wall. The night's watch mans the walls and makes sure no one gets through.

Third episode didn't seem as intense as the first two but good nonetheless. I don't think the future king (the one with the high voice) will appreciate his sister's actions.

They introduced some very key characters who will all play a very big part not for the rest of the season but for the duration of the show. There was some good character exposition, the Jaime-Ned scene and the Robert/Kingsguard scene where they hinted at some important bits of backstory.

That wasn't his sister, it was his mother ! Prince Joffrey and Queen Cersei(Lena Headey). His sister(Myrcella) was the lil' girl at the breakfast scene with the imp(Tyrion) back at winterfell.

In this thread only book related stuff should be inside the spoiler tags. Otherwise whats the fecking point of this thread if we use spoiler tags to discuss the latest episode (usa time) ?

Maybe read the op?

Good episode, strangely quiet ending, though it was done well. Arya is being played particularly well.

Loved the wall. Aiden Gillen portrays Littlefinger great, did a good reveal about him owning the dagger.

No, talking about the blonde haired scronny prince that was lassoed for grabbing the Queen of the Dothraki.

Those of you who like the theme, check this guy out - just him on the piano, good stuff -

started reading the book last week after enjoying the first 2 tv shows and i'm really enjoying it so far

just finished the chapter where robert reinstates ned as his hand after his fight with the kingsguard.

have to say i found this weeks show really poor, whilst i'm sure it didnt help that i knew what was going to happen I noticed just how much they've cut out - particularly dialogue wise. when Ned & Cat arrive at the kingslanding there are several drawn out conversations/meetings between them and other characters that were reduced to a few lines in the tv show, they crammed a bit to much of the story into the last show and disrupted the pace of it imo.

I'm also disappointed that they altered the exchange between dany and viserys in the long grass. They showed her being rescued from him but didnt show her first fighting back and then making the decision to take away his mount herself, showing her to be recognising her own power was an important part of the scene but they took it away from her and made out it was the dothraki guards decision.

but yeah, i'm loving the book and i'll be finished it in a couple more days. does the next one follow straight on from this or does it take place in another period/place of the same world?
