Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

Figured such. Was holding out hope some of it was based off historical events, even if loosely. I figured the white walkers had be some sort of mythical tale.

You sound like my girlfriend. She said the exact same thing. And I said the exact same thing as nimic.

You're... kidding, right? :p

It's fantasy.

Actually I do remember Martin saying that it was very loosely based on the war of the roses.

It definitely has some historic elements, medieval (queue Smashed) being the most relevant. I think if we're trying to compare it to a show, I'd say it's almost a fantasy version of Rome (best.. show ... eeeever)

With regards to the magic in the show (not REALLY a spoiler, doesn't give anything a way but perhaps people may not want to know the way it's integrated throughout)

One of the things I love is that it's more so in the background, they don't throw it out there and go "whoa look at me staff throwin' fire at folks, boom", it's more so people going "nah that ain't possible, just a myth"

i've never heard of this until i saw it being talked about on here.

just watched the first episode. fecking confusing. mind you, never did much care for middle earth medieval settings. Oblivion, dragon age, WoW, all did not appeal to me at all.

I guess between this setting and space/future settings, I like the latter.

I'll give this a go, but fecked if I know who or what is going on.

'Cue' Smashed... :D

That first episode was fecking ace. If it continues like this I guess my summer is ruined.

I'm seriously hoping that they move to a 12(or more) episode format for the next few seasons. Clash of Kings and Storm of Swords are so huge that doing it in 10 episodes would be criminal. I guess they'll have the mix them around a bit to keep up with the pacing.

Went to the biggest Borders store in the southern hemisphere - and I think the one that has the most turnover across the world - yet they didn't have the fecking series. So I ordered it online... Might take up to 3 weeks to arrive.

This makes me mad!

It's not as simple obviously, but I guess you can look at it like that. North = old Northern Europe, Kings Landing (capital) = Southern France, maybe, Mediterranean. And then the far south = Southern Spain/Northern Africa, maybe. But then you also have the other continent, across the narrow sea, with city states, and the Dothraki (yeah, basically mongols/steppe people).

As for "fantasy elements"..

More and more, yes. It will still be more about the characters, at least for a few seasons, but the entire premise is a sort of "magic slowly coming back" scenario.

Right, I've just scanned the net... apparently the Dothraki language is very loosely based on Arabic and Spanish(well, it's suppose to sound like that to non Arabic speakers). But they're clearly more like Hun/other Turkic tribes or Mongols than Arabs/or perhaps Moors if the Dothraki's loosely based on a culture/tribe/civilisation that conquered parts of Europe pre or medievel Europe. They're also a bit Klingon but I suspect they were also based on Mongols.

Then again, I've only seen one episode so I could be wrong.

Why the need to apply it similarities in the real world, or give it a time period? You may as well do the same with Star Wars of LotR in that case.

Yes, you could do the same with LOTR/Star Wars/Star Trek. But there's nothing wrong with basing characters/time periods/people loosely on real world ones.

I'm not saying there is, everything is loosely based on some aspect of reality in some way. The human mind doesn't have the scope to make up a whole new world that bares no similarities with our own.

There's only 12 episodes. Your Summer is ruined because of 12 hours?

I'm nitpicking, sorry.

No but I'm probably going to read the books, hadn't heard of them before

In the last episode Catelyn Stark found a piece of blonde hair in the tower where Jaime pushed Bran, I can't remember that from the books.

I wonder when they're going to reveal that _____ and _____ are really Jon's parents...

 I know the answer but it's something that really shouldn't be revealed in spoilers or the tv show. In the book, it never even really says. Just hints, including the name of the series "A Song of Ice and Fire."

I know what you are playing at, next book maybe as a reward for fans that waited the 200 decades it took him writing it?;)

Sir Matt, you do realize you just spoiled something, right? This isn't just the spoiler thread for the books. At least use the spoiler tag.

And for that matter, you don't know anything. It's just a theory ;)

Loved, the small bits of foreshadowing -
Jaime to Tyrion - about wanting a clean death instead of becoming a cripple, a grotesque.
Rob to Ned - Get her a dog, she'll be much happier for it.

Can't stand that little prick prince. Just has a face you want to smack around, like the dward did.

I love the lil' smirk that Tyrion has when he walks away from bitch-slapping Joffrey thrice. Dinklage has nailed his character. Spot on.

And his interaction with everyone in the family was perfect as well - he refuses to look Cersei in the face, his genuine enjoyment on interacting with Tommen and Myrcella and the loaded conversation with Jaime. Dinklage for an Emmy !

That Prince fecking pisses me off, though do wish he sticks around a bit because I do like to hate someone in a show. The mother I thought was a bit harsh to the bastard son but guess its not all surprising, he seems quite nice and just seems to get out of their way and knows his role.

I'm struggling to find someone who I actually like enough, though am liking Daenerys and the girl who was teaching her to be good in bed. The dwarf is OK, a bit annoying but decent enough.

As you can tell, I'm still struggling with the names quite badly, will get there in the end though

He's a brilliant actor. You should check him out in the Station Master. Great wee film. Couldn't be more different to the character he's playing in this.

so why did the elder sister weasel out ?

Cos she's a bitch.

But in all seriousness, I assume it was because she wanted to marry that Prince and be Queen eventually. So by saying she doesn't remember she is trying to cover all bases, but didn't turn out like she hoped obviously.

Sansa is stupid and lives in fairy land. She's in love with Joffrey and dreams of being Queen.
