A serious look at Mauricio Pochettino

If he doesn’t want clumsy defenders he shouldn’t have brought Sanchez and Aurier to the club. @Amadaeus

Nor should he play Ndombele in a position where he’s basically forced to cover as a defensive midfielder, or continue to play Rose when he’s been a calamity for us nearly every week.

But he did do all that. And he did choose to start Alli who was (predictably) a total passenger. And the diamond did leave our midfield exhausted by the end trying to cover for our shite full backs, with our three midfielders pulled all over the place. The same shit happened against Leicester.

But no, nobody can blame Poch because we had a good spell at the start and a decent xG. He’s totally unaccountable for players he brings in, the mentality of the team in how easily we collapse now, or our defensive woes. It’s all purely down to the ‘clowns’ (fully fledged internationals) he has at his disposal.

Yes, let’s over look the successful years and just look at the past few months. Some of these players were good servants in the past. However, now some of these players are lacking motivation and poch will need to refresh his team to get back to his best. He did well with some of the addition he made last summer...however, only 1 of those additions seems to be the only one fit . That is the limitation of managing a club like Spurs. If Poch has extra cash, Dybala and Cancelo should have been targeted and brought in. Those two players would have vastly improved Spurs and built competition and confidence in their current players. It is time for him to come a club that can give him the players he wants and not limit his financially.

No your not, most people could see it, the thing is you don't see this happens quite a bit in football, you know there is even the saying "you will rue those misses late on". What most people don't do is come on bumming and blowing about seeing it.

If you did see it then you should understand if Spurs wasn’t so wasteful, the narrative would be different today

I have a feeling Brendan Rodgers will end up at Spurs and they might actually be considered serious contenders then. Pochettino has been there for what like 5 years now and he's been a failure. Won nothing major. On paper Spurs aren't that far behind Liverpool. Pochettino isn't the man to take United to the top.

Rogers is a maybe if Pochettino walks or gets the sack, but that would not be until Christmas. And a lot of other names in the pot.

Im not so sure on paper Spurs are equal to Liverpool, who makes it into a combined 11 from Spurs? Kane, Mo Salah and Eriksen would be your front three? No one from Spurs midfield makes the cut over Fabinho and Henderson, Spurs FB's dont even get a look in, guess a case could be made for either Vertonghen or Alderweireld alongside VVD. So two players, Kane and Eriksen, with maybe a third.

He has won nothing. Tell me are Spurs really that inferior to Liverpool on paper?

Give Poch the money and wage capacity of City,Pool,Utd,Chelsea and Spurs would be serious contenders.

Any manager can only take Spurs so far and their resources.

I'm not sure you can call him a failure because he's won nothing. He has qualified for the CL several times whereas before they weren't contenders. He has therefore brought tens of millions to the club in prize money. That's why Levy and Spurs will show loyalty to him. I doubt they will sack him,.

If I have to combined both team, I'll see this:

Mane Firmino Salah
Wijnaldum Fabinho Ndombele
Robertson van Dijk Toby/Matip TAA
Alisson

You could say Kane is better striker but I don't see him more fitting than Firmino in Klopp's system. I can still see Firmino making it into Poch's XI playing behind Kane.

Spurs were qualifying for CL though? I think his record looks a bit better in this era because Chelsea, United and Arsenal have fallen way back that they aren't guaranteed top 4 anymore. Previous managers were up against Cl qualifying machines
Spurs would have had to play as bad as today not to qualify imo, it's not as if Redknapps side would finish 7th in todays league

Liverpool has won nothing until 5 months ago. What was your opinion on Klopp until then?
People were calling Klopp "Flopp" right until he won the CL with Liverpool. So yes, Klopp was seen as a failure by many until recently.

Some were still claiming Mourinho was doing a better job after our 2nd place finish.

Things reached the point of no return I guess. Just waiting for the sacking news now for him.

Thats just a hypothesis and it's not like he had a shit team.

The "He has won nothing"-argument is getting a bit old. Klopp had won nothing until the day Liverpool won CL. Does that mean he did a bad job up until that point?

Klopp won the Bundesliga two times with Dortmund... one time even the double. ;)

Robertson over Danny Rose? Didn't expect that.

He should have left spurs this summer. Foolish of him to continue staying with spurs.

I still don’t warm to him at all, but I believe in his ability even if he’s a bit nothingy and to me, an unlikeable bloke. I’m sure he’d grow on me if he got us firing again.

I posted a few comments on this thread but I really can't, for the life of me, see why anybody would want this trophyless underachiever at this club.

Hes not my first choice, but I wouldn't mind him here. He's done very well at Spurs these past 5 years, spending very little in the process.

He isn't an underachiever given the club he is at and the amount of money spent

If he goes does united get really ruthless and fire Ole and hire Pochettino right away. Will this be an opportunity or go forward with current mgr? I’m hoping its Ole as I think Pochettino would bring united back.

Poch's side has now failed to win any of their last 10 PL away games. I saw Brighton in action a few times already this season a side struggling for goals but they strolled to a 3-0 win today. First bit of pressure that Poch has been under as spurs manager and he's struggling, i simply can't see how he could handle a bigger club whereby the pressure in on within a few games.

Yes he is and he probably landed the best job he could ever land in terms of "pressure" that he would certanly feel with the United or the Madrid job.

Not winning away games? He will fit right in at United.

How do we know Ole isn't an underachiever given the club he is in and the money he has spend?

Probably because he has a poor record overall maybe?

Or are you only going to judge Poch based on the last 9 months?

It's quite clear our midfield and attack are midtable quality at best, and that's without taking our injuries into account. All things considered he's obviously not performing well but I wouldn't say he's underperforming either.

What on Earth? A failure? Don’t forget Spurs we’re basically a mid table team before he came along.

He’s the reason they have these high expectations and no he hasn’t won a trophy yet but he’s got them consistently competing in the league with the big boys.

No offence to Spurs whatsoever but I think Brendan might turn them down (assuming he was asked).

Spurs had not finished below 6th since 2008, so have no idea where this mid table stuff comes from and Poch being this saviour

How often did they qualify for the champions league before he came along?

Don’t forget there was the settled big 4 before, and he gatecrashed that.

Maybe form an agreement but with what Poch said before the CL final I would think he'd take a break if he got the sack soon, go back to Argentina, recharge and pick up the reigns of his new club in the summer.

Rodgers was written off too when his Liverpool side flopped. Now after a few years winning titles in Scotland with no competition and a few good weeks with Leicester he’s going to win the league with Spurs while Poch is written off.

Receny bias at its finest.

How often did they actually finish mid table as you portrayed?
Poch has pushed them, from 5/6th, but also teams like United, Arsenal have fallen off and created the opportunity to get into 4th.
Poch in 2008 would not have finished 4th with Spurs

There wasn't because we had crashed out of it. Spurs got less points in his first season than they did the season before.

He's a very good manager who's reached the end of a long cycle, and now lost the dressing room...

If that makes anyone doubt his credentials - they are being the epitome of 'knee-jerk fans', and showing absolutely no understanding of how football works.

Klopp at Dortmund, Rodgers at Liverpool - cycles come to an end.

Pochettino is a brilliant manager, and if he's available, any top club will very rightly be seriously considering him.
