A serious look at Mauricio Pochettino

Wenger won the FA cup beating City and Chelsea on the way. You lot act as if winning as the underdog is like getting the first man on mars. It's not difficult to win the league cup or FA cup, we won it while being bang average, you don't need Xavi and Iniesta in your team to do it.

It’s not realistic to expect him to win league or FA cup with that squad?
If only he had the best striker in the world, 2 top 5 CBs in the league, one of the best keepers in the world and 3 of the best attacking midfielders in the league. Spurs' team is as good as any other team bar City and possibly Liverpool.

We won the FA cup with Van Gaal, and almost won it with Mourinho. Our squad wasn't significantly (if any) better than Spurs squad.

No, not considering who he is up against. Well, a cup is always possible but not the league.
I like Poch but that’s quite simply not true considering teams often field rotated sides and it’s not as if he asked to win against such teams in every round. They manage to do the job in the league just fine against same teams it’s when it comes to final push they seem to always throw it away in every kind of fashion. That’s a mental thing.

Wenger also won it one season by beating Liverpool, Everton and United (away) on our way to the final.

Bingo.

Pochettino sabotages himself over and over in the cups, downplaying it many times and playing weakened sides.

Spurs had a better squad than us in 16/17, yet got knocked out by Gent in the EL. That won't stop Spurs fans constantly bringing up 'the easiest cup run ever'. They fail to realise that Spurs were part of the very same competition and got knocked out before they could even get an easy cup run.

Yes, exactly. Wenger is ridiculed despite him obviously being a fantastic manager. Wenger even did a better job at the 'no money management'. When was the last time Pochettino made the final 8 of the CL like Wenger did in the late 2000s? Wenger was twice the manager Pochettino is.

Can't fault the guy in his game preparations tonight.

His tactics got them through the match and to the penalty shoot-out - it's not his fault that a 1st team regular bottled his penalty.

Pochettino needs to get himself to a properly Elite club though. He deserves a shot at a club like United.

Also last year they managed to somehow end up getting knocked out by Juve even though the game was pretty much won and on their soil too. It’s psychological, something very wrong when it comes to preparations and management of these high stake games.

Except his game preparation was horrible since Chelsea looked miles better in the 1st half. It begs the question, would Pochettino have even made the change to a back-3 had Davies not got injured? I doubt it.

High time he leaves spurs if he wants to achieve something bigger. One bad season at spurs and his stock could take a beating.

Come on, they were missing their best 3 players.

At the end of the day, he did make the tactical decisions to keep them hanging in there.

Add semi final at Wembley after taking lead.

I don't know how anyone can hold him accountable for spurs losing tonight. He had no Kane, Son or Alli. Certainly can't be accused of bottling it. If anything he done well to stop them from being embarrassed. We got done 4-0 at Chelsea when we were struggling under Mourinho.

It’s pointless saying this, some fans are so elitist and I have to short slightest in actual footballing knowledge that they don’t see the wood for the trees. I’ve said it before, there is a massive difference in being the fan of a team and actually being a football fan. It’s total blinkered thinking. It’s like listening to Joe Cole, thick as shit.

One of the biggest bottlers I have ever seen as a manager

I like him a lot but him saying in the interview what way he’d prefer to lose kinda summed him up when it comes to the crunch

We have another football professor in the club. @Kevin , you have a challenger.

Everyone will kill Poch for not winning the league cup but, then will give Pep zero credit if he wins it again. People only use these domestic cups as a stick to beat certain managers.

Im just saying it how it is, people calling us bottlers, mentally weak are totally ignoring so many things. If Chelsea were without Hazard, Kante eat all, would the game be the same? Of course it won’t.

Yes he did make the changes, but that is game adaptation not preparation. His game preperation was not good, Spurs looked to have no plan coming into the game. I would also say that Spurs hung on in no part thanks to Pochettino, but simply due to poor forward play from Chelsea. This game could have easily ended up with Chelsea winning comfortably on another day as they created plenty of chances and more than what Spurs created.

Another home cup final slips away... how many more you want, mate? Even had the semis at home in the FA Cup last year.

He would be fool’s gold for United. He neither demands the level of success that United require, nor has he shown the ability to manager a squad, rather than an XI, to complete on all fronts. Youth doesn’t get much of a look in, despite the fact that Poch continually isolates his second string. Rinse and repeat the same shit where he runs the first team into the ground and they under deliver when it matters.

How he took Chelsea to penalties still says to me he's a quality manager. I think tactically he is quality and if he was here, I think we would be challenging. I love Ole but this man is of a higher level.....

You cannot take this game in isolation though. It is a common theme with Spurs, whenever they are near winning something, they crash.

Every team losses big matches, but some teams occasionally win those matches and win trophies. We were shit under LVG and Mourinho but still managed to win 2 domestic Cups and Europa. Chelsea was shit last year but still managed to win FA Cup. Arsenal have been shit forever but still managed to win 3 FA Cups in the last 5 seasons. Spurs on the other side have won feck all.

We will have the same debate next season.

And if Chelsea lost on penalties all the talk will be about how crap Sarriball is, how his style can not work in England, Kante is being wasted, Jorginho is crap, never won a trophy, yadda yadda. This place can be so predictable.

Criticising Pochettino for losing to Chelsea with an injury stricken squad doesn't make sense to me. However, criticising his approach to the game does.

Pochettino seem to not realise Llorente had replaced Kane until the second half. One of Spurs' go to plays is for Kane to drop deep to pull a defender into midfield, and then a free man making a run into that space. This works because Kane is fantastic playing with his back to goal and feeding runners. I felt a bit sorry for Llorente because this happened a few times in the first half and he just passed it sideways because he doesn't have that sort of play in his locker. Spurs also insisted on playing out from the back with Dier and Llorente in the team, Dier makes a lot of mistakes trying to play out from the back and Llorente is not suited to that style of play. Spurs got into trouble many times trying to play out.

Higher level?

Shouldnt someone on a higher level be beating Ole and United and Wolves at home and getting 3 points at Watford?

That's why they arent level on points with Liverpool now

One of the biggest bottlers I have ever seen as a manager

Bottling is when you either lose against a weaker team or deservedly lose against a team of similar quality.

Pretty much what Pep was doing for the last 4 years in the CL imo...

Who cares about winning trophies. According to Spurs and Poch fans trophies are overrated anyway.

Yep looks pretty weird to me how fans of a club can mock their rivals clubs when they lose. We should defend them as much as their fans or even more I guess.

Zero pressure environment. Loyal players. Best striker in the world. Best defence in the league. World cup winning keeper. One of the best playmakers in the league, Eriksen. One of the best wingers, Son. All this in the past few years and he bottled the league to Leicester. He bottled endless chances to win a trophy. His in game decision making is the worst I've seen. His tactical rigidity is terrible. Plays the same way against every team. The defence is all over the place against any decent opposition. He runs his team into the ground by playing an unsustainable style and by January they pick up injuries/fatigue. People will say he 'develops players'. Fair enough. But this is Manchester United. Winning comes first. Then you can develop players. Once he develops them what does he do anyway? Wins nothing. Unless we are running a club where we develop players to sell for a profit then its pointless. We should sign the best and focus on winning and then growing the current crop of youth. Poch is not a winner and he doesn't have the mentality to be one. He gets away with any criticism and his teams still win nothing. This isn't about the game against Chelsea, it is a judgement of his whole career. Keep him away from United.

Exactly. Spurs seem to only win when no one puts pressure on them. Once they're close to a title and people start talking about them as a contender for this trophy or to pass through a difficult stage, they bottle it and bottle it hard. It has happened every season at all cups and league campaigns. You can't convince me this crap mentality isn't part of manager's duty.

Poch doesn't have it in him to deal with pressure and expectations and doesn't know how to deal with people start putting his team as a contender. He's only good at winning when no one is expecting anything from him.

He'll be eaten alive by the pressure and expectations on every game in Madrid or United.

Stay away from him. He's a Spurs manager through and through. He fits them perfectly.

It's still very difficult to win. There are a lot of factors in a cup tie. What's the schedule been like, the injury situation and a player having a bad day can be way worse. Spurs were without Alli and Kane, were you considering them favorites? You should never expect a team to win a cup. If players or managers would do that then they've already lost.

This "bottler" narrative becomes ridiculous when you ignore all other more pertinent factors in a loss just to twist it into being what you want it to be.

Spurs currently have a heavily depleted squad that even when in full health is relatively weak. That was the prime issue today and is far more relevant to the result than the convenient pre-existing line of attack on Pochettino. Remove Salah, Mane and one of the midfielders from Liverpool's stronger squad and see how they get on. Or Pogba, Rashford and Martial from ours, which is also a stronger squad.

Just because you think something about a side that doesn't mean that everything that happens to them has to back up your argument.
