Great thread. Has anyone mentioned this legend yet?

Grim Fadango? Think so - never played it, did it hold up? Think it‘s on GOG

Cybercon 3, my very first first person shooter.

Frontier elite 2. Spent many a day in my youth in this game. it really sparked the imagination.

Cruise for a corpse. An Agatha Christie style point and click adventure. Was a lot of fun as someone who was really into murder mystery whodunnits.

Super Mario 64. Knew a guy that used to work down the local trading market, and he was always buying Japanese consoles, of which there was plenty in the 90s. So me and a few mates borrowed his 64 and a copy of the not yet released in the uk Mario 64. We then ordered some pizza, took some acid and smoked all night while playing this game and it was glorious. Didn't have a clue what was going on as there was no English language option. Super, super fun.

Resident Evil. I got an American copy of this before it was released in the uk. Because of that, it was formatted to NTSC which most UK TVs couldnt play. But mine could, only not in colour. I dont know why, but the SCART on the back of my TV could play NTSC signals but just not in colour. But in all honestly, it made the game so much more creepy. This an later final fantasy 7 were the games that first had me losing all track of time and staying up all night playing them.

I've tried for hours today to play the 1996 version of Carmen Sandiego but can't find it anywhere. Only thing I can find is a rom but I can't get that to work :(
Any luck using an emulator like DOSbox or trying to install an older OS via a virtual machine? I've never tried DOSbox but I ran a virtual machine once in a vain attempt to play KOTOR

Best game Tim Schafer made to date. I hated the tank controls though. I have the remastered edition as well on PS4 which has the option to not use tank controls, but there is an achievement for completing the game remaster using tank controls.

This and Escape from Monkey Island were like the last big budget point and click adventure games. After that the genre was relegated to almost indie status.

Was it that one that had really good offline gaming as well? Like all the capture the flag modes etc against AI. Or was that the Quake variant? One of those I played quite a bit - but never online.

Yeah that’s the one. Playing CTF and Domination against AI felt ground breaking at the time. I know Quake 3 was a similar concept, but I thought UT was the kind of the arena shooter. Shame it’s not much of a thing anymore.

It’s the kind of game I really miss. No levelling up, no grinding, no ****ing about. Just go in and shoot.

Nobody mentioned StarCraft yet?
Honestly thought it was early 00s. Brood War together with Frozen Throne and Zero Hour (both early 2000s releases) were all my weekends and holidays for a while.

Commander Keen & Jazz Jackrabbit were two names I'm a little surprised not to see yet. Great games.
A friend of mine played Commander Keen but I never got into it. I loved shooting him in Doom 2 though. :D Jazz Jackrabbit was fun!
GTA 1 and Cannon Fodder were great!

I quite like Grim Fandango, and it has one of the best adventure game stories (or at least the concept) ever; but I didn't like it so much as a puzzler. Day of the Tentacle is really unsurpassed for me, just ahead of Monkey Island 2. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is also really great in my mind, but I should play it again to see how well it holds up.

I remember playing;

Constructor
Gangsters Organized Crime
Sim City 2000
Theme Hospital
Theme Park
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Ultimate Soccer Manager
Age Of Empires
Worms

Doom
Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Half Life, including the Opposing Force and Blue Shift expansions.

Just been browsing GOG.com, haven't been there for a while, there's a ton of great games on there and they have a sale on at the moment:

Complete Civ 3 for $1.49, Sim City 200 special edition for the same

Canon Fodder is a great shout.

I remember playing my older brothers Amstrad and Amiga back in the day, James Pond and Sensible Soccer was my life.

Was SWOS - Sensible World of Soccer mentioned? I remember spending hundreds of hours on it, first game in which you could transfer players, have a career(game ended after 20 seasons if I remember right) and play actual games. They also had many lesser leagues to play in.
Other mentions - The Longest Journey, Comandos - BEL, Baldur's Gate, Thief

GOG has Thief for less than $1

Just got Sid's Colonization to play gain after 20+ odd years, it's well harder than I remembered!

There are lots of old games available for peanuts on Steam as well. I used to do a lot of research on piracy (hm-hm) and very rarely paid for games in the 90s, but I've been catching up a bit on some of my favorites the last few years. Yeah, not quite full price when developers needed it, but anyway!

Anyone remember Freespace 2? Bought it again during the steam sale thought i might replay it, had a fantastic campaign and even better mods, Blue planet was the shit.

Leisure suit Larry in the land of the lounge lizards. Which was rated 18+, so to be able to play it you had to answer a few multiple choice questions to pass the age requirement.

Skate or die: bad 'n rad. Hardly remember this, just that it was infuriatingly hard.

I had SWOS in my list. In particular the 98/99 version where you could curve your passes. Beautiful. There is a new version out where some clever soul has updated it to current teams and packaged it with an Amiga emulator so it runs on a double click. Sadly, I can't get to grips with it after 20 years of FIFA and PES.

Only Tie Fighter, Wing Commander and maybe Colony Wars trilogy could come close to this. Battlestar Galactica conversion based on Freespace 2 engine was also mint.

Everytime I heard that briefing music... enlisting in military, that's what it feels like.

Yeah I have Steam as well, some of the GOG ones are exclusive there

Has anyone had any joy with Amiga emulators on PC? I can't get my head around how to load the roms for games that came on multiple floppy disks.

A new one is coming to switch soon.
All the best stuff comes to the fecking Switch!

I would've bought one ages ago but as it is my PS5 is sat gathering dust and I've zero time to invest, especially as the Switch games I would be playing are extremely time consuming. Hope this one's great though!

That's the beauty of handheld. Just play it in bed
