70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

Would consider swapping Deco and Lampard myself. It's a tough one as Deco would do a better job in either position. Where he is now his playmaking and your control of the game would be superior. On the other hand, Lampard's tendency to bomb forward may leave gaps in central midfield and he may not be as disciplined in recovering possession either.

If you opt for Deco in the hole I would then consider Frings ahead of Lampard alongside Petit. Probably not a great idea vote-wise though.

Lampard is a disciplined player. Cling backs defense isn't his strong point so I can allow myself those two in midfield. Deco and Lampard both do way more defensive work than Riquelme. Having him in your team whilst defending is like having 1 player sent off. He does nothing really.

That's what's good about my team. It's disciplined, balanced and lacks players who are rash and do stupid mistakes. It's a machine.

Your right side of defence is thus looking very weak, maybe switch Carvalho and Edmilson so you alternate better and worse defenders? (particularly, make up for Kelly by having Carvalho on that side)

I think you and several others need to get some perspective in this game now. No player left is going to be 'weak'.

Kelly was twice in the PFA Premier League team of the season - in 1993/94 and 1999/00. Playing for Dirty Leeds, I didn't expect him to be popular, but you simply cannot deny he was a solid, consistent defender who didn't get beaten easily and had a great engine to go forward.

For right-backs, only Gary Neville has been in more PL teams of the year.

People's ignorance to the goalkeepers is also stunning. With so many United fans on here, surely knowing the difference it makes having a great goalkeeper like Schmeichel and Van der Sar to a good one, is the difference between so many games won and lost. Ergo, Van der Sar is my last line of defence.

Deco defending? Oh, really?

Riquelme is also not in my team to defend. But then, you knew that already. What he does going the other way is what bothers you more.

Deco defending yes. In terms of AMC's that is.

I think you're clutching. Deco isn't in a team to defend, though I understand why you'd want him to in an emergency, looking at my midfield. ;)

When people keep questioning work ethic...it really does show how little they watched on a European scale prior to like the monster Messi/Ronaldo boom 2-3 years ago.

He was great at playmaking and doing an immense amount of work for Barca behind Dinho, Eto'o and Giuly/Messi.....sure he mostly had a two defensive minded players next to him(or Xavi who more restrained then, still class though), but those 3 had to make up for 3 incredibly luxury players in front of them, Messi works far harder now than he did then.

Are you talking about Deco? He had Edmilson and Van Bommel behind him. Later Toure and Xavi.

I agree on Riquelme. Feel Deco is more disciplined and has a higher workrate than Lampard, thus the suggestion, but you would prefer your playmaker to operate freely in the hole as opposed to being constantly embroiled in a midfield battle with Vieira.

He was your weakest link in the first round, why would it be any different in the second? It wasn't him getting you here.

No one questioned VDS as far as I see. In fact, he is the saving grace of what must be the least impressive back four still in it. If a goalkeeper ever counted it will be here, he really does prop them up.

But he isn't weak, was all my point was.

Nobody questioned him. But nobody even mentioned him whilst discussing the defence.

The least impressive back line belongs to my opponent. With Dida in goal, too. Which is fortunate, given my front line.

its true that keepers are always ignored - with Buffon out, VDS might well be the best left?

and for the sake of the next matches, how shall we decide any draws?

Personally I like the idea of choosing 5 players for penalty shoot out and having a revote.

I think removing participating managers' votes will give you the neutral caf vote and that is unlikely to also be a draw.

It's a good reward and recognition for them chipping in (invaluable) and for the team which has captured their imagination without a multipage thread building up the argument.

Also a lot less predictable, which is fine by me, brings the luck/random element of football into it.

It is an interesting idea - although I think there is as valid an argument for only taking the votes of other fantasy managers

either way I prefer the penalty shoot out option

Real life has extra time first...

I see no reason why this/a replay can't happen either. Don't disagree with that.

Deciding it on Football Manager seems a nonsense, but it's not my match.

So we are having a whole new thread with a penalty shootout? Seems a bit far if you ask me, especially when these threads have taken up quite a lot of the forum already.

But if that's what Brwned/Antohan decides then I'll post my kick takers.

We can delete the thread if required after the poll is finished.

Anyways lets make this simple. Can you forfeit?:nervous::p

I think because you have an assistant manager and have had 2 brains working on your team as opposed to my one - you should forfeit :)

Im getting a bit bored of this now, several options have been given to you guys for finishing your match ...

- new thread: penalty shoot out
- Football Manager
- toss a coin
etc

so can you both agree on something and get it sorted?

If there's no result by the end of the day I reckon we should kick them both out. :)

I think we agreed to a penalty shoot out but Brwnd is not online yet to make a poll or a final decision.

I personally think penalty shoot out with new thread is the best option (and also for any other draws going forward) so you both need to post your 5 takers and then Brwnd will sort it when he comes online.

I have said I am happy for either of the first two options. I think another thread would be over doing it personally so the football manager way would get my vote. I was under the impression we were waiting for a decision from brwned anyway

Ok cool let's stick with this then. I will post my kick takers shortly. Are you going to post justifications or just your 5 takers

If it helps, people will probably base their vote on each kickers most memorable penalty, i.e. finals or if they missed a big one.

So Roberto Baggio, whilst a prolific and very reliable penalty taker for the duration of his career, would probably be put down for his miss in USA. Shame.

That's what I'd imagine will happen anyway, so choose wisely.

Christ... The longest game in history this... What is the penalty kick thread is a draw? Has no one thought about that?

It takes forever as well.

Screw it, I like the FM idea as it will quickly, efficiently and DEFINITELY kick one of you out and put us all out of our misery!

Going forward I like the non-managers votes deciding it. Not that I have anything against them, I just think making our votes more "powerful" stinks of clique inbreeding.

Give the power to the average caftard!

Well, never mind saying we're a clique; you just called everyone else 'average'...

It's a fair point, same would happen as far as the keepers goes. VDS by his own admission was not great at penos, yet everyone would see him on the shootout and nod with approval.

I'm not saying we are, I'm saying it would stink of that, which is correct. Go ask anyone else what they think and they would go "why the feck? are you better or superior to me?". It would be the wrong signal to non-managers whose participation we actually really appreciate.

And no, I'm not calling them average as in mediocre, I'm calling them average as in the word with no derogatory connotations and associated with probability. There are good caftards, there are manic ones, there are scousers and gooners and chavs... all of them count, i.e. the average cafite or everyone but the 16+Assistants who are in this.

Mate, I was kidding!

Well United are rarely awarded penalties against (and its never happened at Old Trafford), so I can only go on shoot-outs. He's saved one or two in Shields, but the Anelka one would be remembered by most and Taibi would've saved that one.

David O'Leary, 1990. Unlikely taker, memorable scorer. Must be great at pens then!

It looks like Zen is going to be able to do the football manager way so should we just do it? Antohan, you decide, its your competition

tbh im going now, you people take too long for something so trivial....this coming from the guy who spent 30 minutes making a fm friendly out of it like(which was 1-1 and then 5-4 on pens with Beckham missing fwiw, but I just let the cpu pick the takers).

just decide it using random.org......both pick 5 numbers each from 1-10.....whoever picks the first generated number on generate app it has on the homepage wins.
