As it stands I'll have to play a completely different way to what I originally set out for.

I'll take "knife between the teeth" Simeone

and Bobo Vieri

Hopefully my next two "must haves" will survive and I'll be fine and dandy.

Juninho Pernambucano

 Last round I was lookign through midfielders and wondered who was going to go for him. I thought it would be you, of course.

Have you set yourself up for the challenge of making it an all-Brazilian side?

I was right to pick Petit. A lot of DMCs going. Really expected Vieiri and Carvalho to go as well. Aimar and Litmanen the only two surprise picks since my last one for me.

Where you considering Simeone at all? I thought he might go under the radar BUT he was the one I would have picked if I were you so that forced my hand.

I hate Simeone. A prick. Also not sure how good he was in his prime. Just remember him being a thug.

This is the first pick that Ive really had to think about and I cant fecking decide who to go for !!

Ok feck it, Im going for Michael Owen - he has had his issues but we are talking about players in their prime and this guy won the Ballon D'Or at his peak and it doesnt get much better than that

Good pick - I was considering him for my next round pick

he is two years older than I thought he was. are you sure you are not picking him a bit early in the draft?

Given the quality of striker that's gone since my pick, perhaps. My thinking was he was probably the best no 10 left in the draft, with the really top class ones (Zidane, Rivaldo, Riquelme) already gone. Initial plan was to pair him off Crespo, with Veron feeding in behind, but that cnut Cal scuppered those plans. Still, a top player in his first few seasons at Valencia, there's no doubt about that.

Where's thereligion? I'm drunk and falling asleep soon...

I hope Cal thought to PM somebody before getting drunk and falling asleep.

I share the sentiment. Thing is, midfield enforcers are not there to win popularity contests, rather the opposite. Most non-United fans would readily write the stuff in bold about Keano.

What counts is that fans from all teams he has played in hold him in great esteem. He's just gone back to Atlético as manager, in very similar circumstances to King Kenny last year: appease the fans with an undisputed club legend (won the domestic Double with Atlético).

He also won the UEFA Cup at Inter, the Double at Lazio, two Copa Américas with Argentina + all sorts of other Charity shield/EuroSuperCups type honours, etc).

For a long time he was the one name I didn't want to see on the teamsheet when playing Argentina. Verón and others wouldn't influence the outcome of a derby as much as Simeone's presence would. Although, in fairness, that also had to do with the fact that they were severely lacking in top level midfield alternatives (from a defensive standpoint).

Good point. There was a gulf in class between a top-level enforcer like Simeone and some of the other options like Duscher.

A lot of Argies were very bitter after the WC exit in '02 blaming him and the manager for keeping him past his best. But they had bugger all alternative really.

The guy they should have shot in public was Passarella for falling out with Redondo over haircuts pre-WC98, and the whole Argentinian public/FA for never taking him back even after Passarella was gone. Instead of blaming Passarella they blamed Redondo for being so obtuse about his hairstyle.

:wenger: they could have won WC98 with Redondo TBH. Instead, they had Simeone carrying out the midfield battle all by himself for half a decade.

I understand all that. But this is a fantasy draft. He's not in mine. And I don't rate him higher than Petit. Petit won leagues and cups as well as the WC and EC. He wasn't a disliked man, in fact Wenger holds him in the highest regard of any footballer he's met. There aren't that many French footballers that have been given high honors in France. He is one of them though.

So I don't think I made and error in choosing him over someone else.

Eh? I never said you made a mistake picking Petit. My point was having him as the third centre-mid, with Petit and him either side of Lampard who would bomb forward as usual (4-3-2-1/4-2-3-1 type stuff) which is what I thought you were getting at earlier. Unless you see Simeone as a DM sitting in front of a back four which is not where he is best utilised.

Anyhow, clearly a case of misreading. I thought he could possibly last the 30 pick round on the back of people disliking him/Becks red card precedent, etc. (as you say, him not being people's fantasy) but was worried that 1. he made a lot of sense in your midfield, more so than anyone else I could think of, 2. Crustanoid downloaded CM from those days and he was insanely good there (maybe that was 00/01 though, straight after Lazio's double).

I'll just cross my fingers my next 2 picks don't go now.

For all your panicking I can't believe Vieri lasted this long! Truly unstoppable centre forward in his prime, and maybe the last available of that ilk now that he and Shearer, RVN, Drogba have all been snapped up.

Bizarre, I know. Once Shearer went I thought it would be just a matter of time and was surprised to see him survive when so many obviously could use him. In principle there are lots of great strikers out there but few that can hold their own as a lone striker.

Yea, I thought you meant why I opted for Petit instead of Simeone. I have one player in mind at the moment. Let's see if he'll make it.

I got that CM as well. Didn't help me at all. Guess my research was good enough. I have an excel sheet with all the good players I could find and the best I bolded. Not many bold midfielders left.

I thought you were going to go for Vieri on this pick and try to get Aimar/AN Other on your next. That said, Aimar's a serious vote winner for me. I really believe that if injuries had been slightly kinder to him and if he'd been born a decade or so earlier he'd have been seen as one of the greats of his generation.
