50s Retro Football Fantasy Draft

There's still plenty of forwards left in fairness, I didn't even want Hugo Sanchez just yet but he's the only top-tier forward left and no-one can match his goals record. There's still a good 10 or so forwards around a similar level now, I'd say. Unlike in the last draft though most of the good forwards here played in a partnership, so it could get pretty scarce pretty quickly on that front!

I see your point, but I'd rather leave Crustanoid to make up his mind seeing as he is a sucker for forwards.

I had Sanchez penned down as my striker if by any chance they were left for later rounds. There's a weird sense of relief when some players go, your next step suddenly become much clearer

Few more to go before my pick, know who I'm going for if he's not chosen first...

Interesting combination, don't you think to some degree they'd get in each others' way? Both loved to drop deep and run at defenders, obviously with their ability to beat a man there's always going to be space and they could always pull out wide but, just out of interest, why choose two similar forwards over a more conventional fox-in-the-box type?

They are similar in the sense that they both have the most complete range of skill-sets and attributes (technical, mental and physical), having proven their quality and adaptability in performing to a very high level in a variety of roles whether it is leading the line, out wide or deeper. Having both of them will contribute to a very fluid and lethal offense

Ruminegge would have been my striker pick if available but I'm going to stick to my guns and go for one of the best centre backs in this generation: Claudio Gentile

Aw come on Pol, don't give me that PR guff! No-one's in any doubt these are two of the very best forwards on show, very possibly the best. You don't think they were both somewhat unconventional strikers, though? There's no doubt about the versatility of their skillset - Kempes was spraying balls about from a midfield role in '82 which is remarkable for a player who scored 125 goals in just over 175 games for (at best) the 5th best team in Spain in the 5 years previous to that. They just seem a very unusual pairing in every sense, if you do decide to pair them together rather than stick them in a fearsome front three.

Also, am I the only one that didn't think Socrates was all that? Relatively immobile, lazy, passive...you could always rely on him to add a touch of class to the game but I didn't think he was on the same level as Zico or even Falcao, from what I saw. Perhaps some of his games in '86 are just more fresh in the memory than '82.

It was an honest reply
Because they have complete skill-sets and are capable of playing in a variety of roles, they can play together as a front 2. They can interchange roles comfortably with their intelligence, mobility and work-rate, adding fluidity and unpredictability to the attack
If it is a case of two players with specialised skill-sets, then yes they could get in each other's way eg two goal-poachers going for the same shot
As you have rightly pointed out, their adaptability also means I can play Kempes in an attacking midfield role or switch to a front 3 if the opportunity arises

Socrates was an incredibly intelligent player. He could read and influence games without needing to move much - perhaps like a midfield version of Berbatov - but far more effective - fused with Xavi. He also banged the goals in for Corinthians where he was more influential at the sharp end of attacks (the Brazil team had more in the way of potency and he therefore played a more subtle role in the World Cup 82 and the two Copa Americas either side). 1986 being really the end of his career, and yes he was less impressive there, but so were the rest of the Brazil team.

Tdon to go, praying he doesn't take the man I'm lining up...

Feel free to PM me if anyone can't make it any time over the next 4/5 hours.

Me next then...I'd Love It, Love It if I won this competition, and with that in mind, my 2nd pick is 2 time European Footballer of the Year, Kevin Keegan.

Oh crap.

It was a toss-up between him and Boniek for the right order. Think I made the right call but I'll miss this fella :(

Hey, I waited up till like 4am for people to take their picks, well more than six hours, then mine gets passed by, without even a second thought? The cheek of you people! :p

Can I go now or what?

Yes, go as technically IL can go as soon as he is on here.

Hope you didn't miss out on someone you wanted. I was expecting you to go for a striker or DM, so probably fine.

by all means

Yeah I missed Hansen, that damn Gio fella stole my go and my player! :D

Again, I'm on my phone so sorry for no picture, but Id like to take Marius Tresor, please.

Agree, I was in two minds as to whether to pick him because he sure made football look easy (which allowed him to be such an unfit twat ).

Superb player, great to watch, as is someone like Riquelme, but I just can't fathom having an immobile/lackadaisical type in this sort of game. With a larger squad you would want him but with a short squad as you start off here he can limit options.

No loss, Tresor's shaped from the same cut of silk.
