Will be interesting to see how you go about fitting him in. Handy to have in any case, which was where I was. McGrath was a must have though.

BTW, IL, what do you think about getting started while all this picking is going on?

I'm sending my team to Brwned via PM.

Been dippin in and out of following this thread, but TDon seemed to get rinsed here. Why did he win the group then get last pick?

You could have done with Schumacher TBH

I think you are vastly underrating Neville Southall mate. He's one of the best keepers I've seen. Add to that the fact that nobody takes any notice of the keepers anyways.

It was opposite order of how we picked in the original draft, I think. I'm still pissed off though!

The logic is whoever picks first gets better players. TDon got Zico, while Brwned got Neeskens so it is only fair Brwned now gets Rummenigge while TDon gets Giresse.

It's just one way of arranging the draft and balancing out. TDon gets an easier draw on paper as a result of being first.

In any case, it's the same situation as mine, only that I got neither Zico nor Rummenigge

I know! Its me having Zico, Junior, Leandro, Tigana, Tresor, and now Giresse, they're all jealous! :D

3 French superstars and 3 Brazilian superstars. All lit up the 82 WC.

I was jealous about Zico and Tresor. Now only Zico.

It dawned on me today there are only 3 other players I would really want in my team going into the next round and each of them is involved in a different quarterfinal... meaning I'm never going to get more than one of them :annoyed:

Fair enough! You're team is good though, you have great wingers but could do with a striker, I didn't recognise yours IIRC. Morena?

But back to the picking order, this may not be the right maths because I'm not certain on how many players there were etc, think it was 10. But say TDon was 1st originally and Brwned was 10th then there isn't that much benefit for TDon because the 10th best player of the decade is still brilliant, plus Brwned then gets to pick 11th and TDon is stuck with 20th.

But in this round of picks when they are choosing from the losing players team, the inequality is much more vivid. Say the losing player was 5th pick originally, that means he objectively got the 5th best player, the 15th, 25th, 35th, 45th etc.

If Brwned gets first pick and chooses the 5th best player, TDon gets last pick and gets the 45th best player, then that is a huge difference in quality. Certainly bigger than the original difference in getting 1st and 20th pick, compared with 10th and 11th.

Part of this is finding out about players you didn't get to know. He was a truly devastating centreforward. I wrote about him here and here.

Start this at 2:45 for his 36 goals in 21 games in 1978. Not highlights, his season review basically.

But back to the picking order...

Yes, it is a bit crap and somehow makes it tilt the complete other way. That said, he got Giresse, who was probably a third round pick. You could also argue it's a late reward for some as both teams that went out were at the latter end of the original picking order.

Trying a few formations out. I reckon Gio will be strong in the middle but I still have to have some width. That is why the wing backs are important as is the ability of Valdano and Dalglish to move out wide, allowing Socrates and Juanito to come through the middle. There's a few options.

How long is there to decide?

Not a huge fan of that second one mate, it would require a lot of thinking rather than impulse voting. If you were playing it I would put Gordillo out wide on the left, probably more effective than Juanito and allows for defensive cover on that flank (Gentile can take up RB with ease).

It's a toss-up between the other two. I'm inclined to go for the VDK one as Gordillo can do the job on the left.

In my match against Gio, I tried to pack the midfield at the expense of my wingers and got destroyed, despite having a better fullback pairing than you. So I think a bit more of a wide attacking threat is needed, particularly on Battiston's side. I'd opt for number 3; very solid midfield without sacrificing too much attacking potential.

OK, it looks like I'll go with number 3 (I had lent towards that or very near it anyway). One final variation before I settle though:

Looks about right. VDK was a total footballer after all :D

Juanito is probably underrated though, you should probably pick up a clip or two because he is not a big World Cup name and the Real most on here remember is likely that of la quinta del Buitre, while he was in his pomp before that.

First thing that comes to mind when I think of Juanito is this...

Ah - he was just being a bit playful with him there. The game was different back then etc
Just found what looks like a whole documentary on him:

That in itself would do. I'm sure most imagine a slightly-framed Juninho Paulista type. Where he is playing, alongside Socrates, you may as well make sure it is clear he was not shy as far as getting stuck in goes :D

Matthaus was a cnut anyway. Legendary ass-kicking

Yes - in fact - a midfield battle containing Socrates, Juanito, Souness, Brady and Tardelli

My point precisely, it would be epic but you've done well to add Tardelli as the average caf member would read:

  • Socrates: unfit chainsmoker
  • Juanito: sounds like a ballerina
  • Souness and Brady: bad ass midfield
And conclude you are dead, when clearly you aren't.

I'm still intrigued what Gio may do with Kempes though. Funny that Nani went out for not having fullbacks and both of you may be better off playing with three at the back.

Can't see Gio doing that though, if I recall correctly he didn't have any time for back threes.

It's a great documentary, shame it's in Spanish and visually it will do little for the non-Spanish speaker. Brings me back to the days I really liked Real: great players, very passionate and all very articulate, not all this Galactico primadonna bullshit. What an outstanding team and club that was.

Interesting tidbit: Gordillo wears a bracelet with a photo of Juanito.

Solid pick Duffy. Cuelemans and Robson's running from midfield with Keegan holding the ball up will be difficult to defend against. And there's Blokhin to throw in the mix as well.

I think you could've fit Hoeness into your team quite nicely but it does make a pretty wonderful back 5.

Not much lost in the clearout...

Im ready for the off, sent my underdog Stoke City like tactics to Brwned yesterday!

Stoke? Surely you have Blokhin and Houseman on the flanks with Keegan upfront and Ceulemans through the middle?

The million dollar question is whether TDon goes for a square or a diamond and one or two upfront.

By no means a one-sided game this one. Despite being at the end of the drafting order, yours is probably the most significantly improved side. You had a glaring weakness which is no longer. The rest of us mostly picked up marginal improvements.
