40s Retro Football Fantasy Draft | Finished

Precisely. You'll get some players from S-America or from behind the Iron Curtain whose careers will be a bit difficult to document in the same way you can with most players who featured in the major European leagues - but I think we can live with that.

Every team here will have some genuine stars - so the challenge will be to build proper teams around those players. You don't get to field 11 names you can easily sell - instead you have to actually sell the team, the balance, the tactics, etc. Which is how it should be, actually, if you ask me.

Well, that goes for the rest of you mugs anyway - I have Pelé, so I don't really have to worry about tactics or shite team mates and such.

Very relieved to get my man here, although going for him constitutes a bit of a gamble on my part. Not as much of a gamble as I initially thought, though, since I've reconsidered my opinion regarding who Aldo will actually go for. But I can't afford to lose this player, so I'm picking him now:

A winger who is also – that will at least be my contention – capable of playing the role of what we call a «side midfielder», which is precisely what I need for my team.

One of the finest lateral (hey, that's a nice term) players the grand footballing nation of Italy has ever produced, with a cross on him which would make David Beckham proud (and which is sure to find multiple players eagerly waiting for it in the box), and a player whose tactical awareness was honed to perfection by the – dare I say – sinister mind of one Helenio Herrera, for whom my man won two European Cups on the trot as an integral part of La Grande Inter.

Very happy, then, to pick up God's Left Foot, the legendary Mario Corso.

Plus, he's actually in keeping with my generally offensive approach: I pick the man who captained one of the best (if one of the most odious) club sides ever to two European Cups: Neil Young likes him, and he can play both centrally and - hey - laterally: Emlyn Hughes.
