40s Retro Football Fantasy Draft | Finished

I'm going against my heart here in more ways than one, but I have to secure at least one top class defender. Plus, he's actually in keeping with my generally offensive approach: I pick the man who captained one of the best (if one of the most odious) club sides ever to two European Cups: Neil Young likes him, and he can play both centrally and - hey - laterally: Emlyn Hughes.

For poems written in his honour, see: http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/

Sometimes I'm a real fecking bastard.

Helenio Herrera said:
Bobby Murdoch is my complete footballer.

Jock Stein said:
As far as I'm concerned, Bobby Murdoch was just about the best player I had as manager.

Bertie Auld said:
To me Bobby Murdoch will go down as one of the finest Celts ever. He was absolutely magnificent and could have played for any team at any level. The phrase “world class” is a bit overused, but he was that and a little bit more. Sometimes people forget that.

Bobby Murdoch

Bengt Ove Kindvall
(born 16 May 1943) is a former Swedish footballer (forward).

He started his career at IFK Norrköping, where he played until he joined Feyenoord in 1966 and became professional. The same year, he won the Guldbollen, as the best Swedish footballer of the year.

With Feyenoord he won two national championships as well as the 1970 European Cup. In the final against Celtic he scored the winning goal in extra time. In his five seasons with the club, Kindvall scored 129 league goals in 144 games. He returned to Sweden and Norrköping 1971, where he played for three years, until ending his career in IFK Göteborg.

He was the first non-Dutchman to be named Eredivisie top scorer, doing so in 1968, 1969 and 1971. No other foreigner achieved this until Romário in 1989.

He played 43 games with the national team and scored 16 goals. He participated in the 1970 and 1974 World Cup, playing a major role in the team's qualification for the former.

Re uniting with the legend that is Van Hanegem, an often underrated and forgotten great goalscorer who, if he played for the same national team that he tore it up in week after week, may be considered one of the greatest forwards in Dutch history. The two of these made up a vital part of a title and European cup winning Feijenoord side. Playing and scoring regularly in one of the best leagues of the time, against great defenders such as Ruud Krol, Barry Hulshoff and Wim Suurbier. His ability to score with any part of his body, either a cool finish with either feet or a powerful header, along with a great burst of acceleration to take him past his defender, made Ove Kindvall a nightmare to play against. It also lead to him scoring at a considerable rate, having a greater GpG ratio then Ronaldo Luis in his peak, this man, who is well versed in the versatile and fluid total football systems of the Dutch sides in the seventies, is the perfect person to lead my attack.

Some clips of his goals against some of the teams of that era:

Pretty sure @ctp would have loved to reunite him with Marzolini as well. I need a few minutes here.

Do you know how hard it is to find videos of older players?

I had Perfumo on my list, but he wasn't a priority pick for me.

Bengt Ove Kindvall (born 16 May 1943) is a former Swedish footballer (forward).

Awesome. When you chose not to pick Jansen I thought that there were no chance of Ove Kindvall(as he's commonly called) being picked. His goalscoring ratio was great in Sweden too where he scored 70 goals in 84 matches and he started his career there early as a 19 year old. Was the top scorer in Allsvenskan in 66 and also finished second in 1964 as a 23 year old. Great that you found the clip of his '69 game

After retiring he ventured in to TV and became the first pundit in football in Sweden in 1978 when he was covering the World Cup.

Have to toughen up my midfield a bit and with the quality CMs running out:

Time for a hard man in my defence, and they don't come much harder than him. He also happens to be my grandfather's favourite player - Horst-Dieter Höttges, the Iron Foot

@Gol123

Nice one, I was waiting for him to make his appearance. One of those Swedes, like Edström (who isn't eligible before anyone gets their knickers in a twist), who in a draft context are usually bound to be less obvious than the likes of Gre-No-Li or Hamrin (or Ibrahimovic, if anyone dares to go with him), but who nevertheless made their mark - thoroughly so.

Precisely the sort of player who should get some deserved attention in this draft.

He is a hard sell as there are hardly any reports/videos on him. It was hard finding out what he was really like as a player and whether he fit into what I had in mind.

Can I leave my pick with somebody? Just in case I am not on when it comes back to me.

Scored the winner for Feyenoord in '70 - and was a mainstay in that illustrious side. You hardly need more than that, I'd say. He's clearly a more than decent striker in this context - that much can't be doubted by anyone.

As for details, that depends, of course, on what precise role you have in mind for him - but I can't imagine it to be impossible to dig up some material relevant to him.

I dunno. I have seen lots of players get slaughtered on here before due to not being as well known or having as many fans.
