2034 WC to be Held in Saudi Arabia after Australia Pulls out

They will get a CL final before then I expect, and we are probably not very far from UAE World Cup either.

Not great, but not surprising from an organisation that’s allowing the WC to be hosted in a country that committed a 21st century genocide.

I’m sure you’ll be around to discuss that WC in that thread when the time comes.
Like I said, if you want to discuss the US world cup in another thread then have at it. Agree re the Russia World Cup btw. Was a horrible decision as well.

I wonder if some of the FIFA members who where on the committee for this suddenly show up in brand new sports cars.

Forgetting the politics of it all, I assume this will be another winter world cup?

As a general concept I don't mind joint hosts but going from USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026 and then Portugal, Spain and Morocco in 2030 to only Saudi Arabia in 2034 looks/feels a bit odd.

So another one I won’t watch. Sad state of affairs.

How come other countries, with actual football infrastructure and ready built stadia, have to club together to hold a WC, yet Saudi get to host one on their own.

Why no joint Saudi/Jordan/Yemen bid?

It costs too much money to build more stadiums. Portugal can’t do it alone. It is in their interest to share with Morocco & Spain… while in the case of Saudi Arabia they do have money to build all the needed infrastructure, bringing in Jordan wouldn’t add anything…

Assuming it was a bit tongue in cheek given Saudi and Yemen's history...

did any of you actually watch the announcement? all the scrutineers gave thumbs up that the countries were fine to host the cups, and the fifa delegates all probably applauded, except the ones that weren’t there. it’s all above board and fine.

Delighted that Saudi got the World Cup. Not that I like Saudi, feck 'em, but to see the tears of all the western country's FAs crying about human rights.

My brain stopped at Jordan didn’t read the rest, the Saudi regime was responsible for thousands of civilian deaths in Yemen. But they are currently at peace.

Ah, yeah, human rights. Who needs those right?

Great reason to support it, nice one. 4 da lulz!!!!

Any word on whether this will be another winter WC ?

I read almost certainly yes, but probably in Jan rather than December to avoid something religious (sorry I can't remember much details or where I read this... but I'm a very trustworthy source).

Thanks. Just found this bit in a NY Times article.

"If the Saudi Arabia World Cup is also moved due to those concerns, it would likely have to be brought forward to January and February of 2034, due to Ramadan — the Muslim holy month of fasting and prayer — falling in November and December of 2033 and 2034".

So in summary, this time the football calendar will not only be held hostage to the climate of the awarded country; it will also be affected by the religious calendar of said country.

Almost certainly. Not my words but the words of climatetotravel.com.

"June in Saudi Arabia is on average a scorchingly hot month, with a minimum temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius (76 degrees Fahrenheit), a maximum of 39.6 °C (103 °F), and therefore a daily average of 32.1 °C (90 °F)."

Lord knows how much hotter it will be in ten years time!

Aye. It may mean nothing to the Saudi regime if we refuse to watch their World Cup, same as in any other corrupt regime where past and future World Cups have and will be held, but at least we can tell our grandchildren that we did not turn a blind eye toward it.

Great planning by FIFA there  Wonder if anyone thought about that when giving them the rights.

I suppose, given it's only every four years and is unlikely they'd have gotten another chance in that near future, they thought to force it in 2034 despite this.

That. But mostly it makes me mad and there’s no reason to make myself mad watching something that should bring me joy.

It’s amazing how we were told it would be shared around continents then we have 2 WCs in Qatar and Saudi in a short space of time.

Fifa are apparently chalking this up to Asia representing a WC. If that's the case then that would be three for Asian nations within a 32 year period.

What a sad indictment of the state of the world.

It's strange how so many nations will need to make cultural and social accommodations for a Saudi Arabian World Cup yet Saudi Arabia probably won't make any accommodations for anyone.

On top of that you look at South America and they have had 2 WCs in 80 years (1978 and 2014 since 1950), but I think it is all fine since they get 3 games from the 2030 version...

Well the next one is in North & South America, the one after is in Europe and Africa, Australia aside there isn't really another Oceania country capable so next in line is Asia

We had a World Cup in 2024??? I'm guessing you mean 2014

Ummm... no, it is not. It is in the US, Mexico and Canada.

No real surprise... Whoever pays FIFA the most money wins the WC. Once Qatar hosted it, it was obvious other ME countries will be in for the WC.

Its just frustrating how an organization like FIFA are dictated by Middle Eastern countries, they can do anything they want as long as the money is in the officials accounts.

As usual, 10 years early, the moral police have started their anti Saudi campaign. Qatar was a great World Cup and I sure this will be too.

Bloody snowflakes worried about the deaths and suffering of other human beings. What are they like eh?

Keep religion out of sport! (Or something.)

I think they've scheduled Arsenal vs Spurs on Yom Kippur before, but I guess that's alright.
