If Harris came out and said she wouldn't be prepared to serve as vice for another term under Biden, but would be prepared to stand for presidential candidacy if he stepped down, would that be the straw that could tip him over? How wonderful he'd been etc but now was the time etc?

Because they're not journalists; they're simply stenographers or parrots repeating talking points* they've been handed out. Biden's cognitive decline didn't just happen at the debate—the press has had close access to him for years, yet they keep pushing the lie that he's sharp and in control. Anyone who questioned his age or mental acuity was labeled a Putin agent. The gaslighting is next-level.
* Notice the uniform chorus of "Biden is sharp as a tack." It's so obviously a scripted talking point. Ask 100 people about Ten Hag, and you'll get 100 different opinions. Ask 100 MSM 'journalists' about Biden pre June 27th, and you'd get 100 identical responses: "sharp as a tack."
That would be catastrophic for her chances imo. She’s a woman so it would be painted as underhand and disloyal.
It wouldn't help him, but he could just as easily choose another running mate before the convention. On the other hand, if she jumps off, it would probably result in a fair number of other Dem congress members jumping off. At the end of the day, they are in the business of staying in office, and if Biden's candidacy is perceived as a drag, then that could break the dam.
It's not just Biden though? Similarly, how the feck did anyone in the entire US take Trump as a serious presidential candidate when he first ran?
They must think Biden running has a higher chance of winning than a totally new entrant at this point. Why else wouldn't they try with Newsom or Andy Bashear or Whitmer this cycle,?
Ultimately, the party is still run by the President and his acolytes, alongside an agreeable faction or two (ie Clyburn et al). If Newsom or anyone else wanted to get it, they would have to fundraise from scratch with virtually no time remaining. Don't forget, early voting in some states starts as early as late Sep, therefore, its highly improbable that anyone other than Biden or Harris would be able to fundraise, install a ground game in swing states, and campaign sufficiently to win.
It's true serious candidates for leadership are always keen to show how loyal they are, but I think she could get over that with the etc bits I put in, what a good president he'd been, but now it would be in his own interest and so on.

Most of his acolytes are Obama guys; even Ron Klein, his then Chief of Staff, defected to Hillary's campaign in 2016 while Biden was Vice President and still running.
I don't think Biden can run anything, let alone the DNC. If Obama and Clinton (Bill not Hillary) want, they can effect change.

She correctly knew he had a calamitous debate and was trying to cheer him up. Nothing wrong with a wife supporting her spouse on a bad night.
Would be nice, but can't see it happening. Everyone is already circling the wagons around Harris if Biden drops out.
It will be Harris since legally she is the only who can use the cash with Biden Campaign. For any new candidate to generate it from scratch would require Hollywood going all out but even that might not be enough since Wall Street seems to be leaning towards Trump this cycle.

People saying why Newsom or Whitmer would not run/replace instead of Biden. Why would they at this point? Trump is most likely to make everyone tired of himself and GOP will go down with it in 4 years. That would be a good chance for them to swing the country back to Dem. In fact, they would probably prefer 2nd Trump term. How many times a party hold the white house for more than two term in a row?

The Dems have been telling everyone that Trump is an existential threat to democracy. If they believed that, the candidate with the best winning chances should have no choice but to run now, whether it fit into their career plans or not. But then again, the Dems clearly don’t believe that, given that they’re sleepwalking into a certain defeat because too few of them have the courage to speak up.
I mean, they are politicians. What they say and what they think and what they act are totally different.
Both parties say shit like oh the other party is destroying country every two years.
Given what Trump has pledged to do, I don’t think it’s wrong to call him a threat to democracy. The problem is the Dems are undermining that narrative by sticking with a losing ticket out of fear or loyalty.
Good thing we already found the mastermind of Dem strategy and the main culprit of this whole fiasco: a 73 year old Community college teacher.

Their judgment can't be this bad, especially, if they want to be the president. Why would you kill your political ambition in this situation? They would have been severely underprepared for the task at this point.

Biden can always tell them to f off. Even if he is stepping down, it is most likely that Harris is stepping up.
And you can't force someone else to take the nomination and run the presidential election which is happening in four months.
Which goes back to my point of Dems being stuck with these two people.
It seems to be going on the wrong direction for Biden, although that process is being slowed down by recent polling.
Yeah, FiveThirtyEight are now having Biden as the slight favourite to win with 271 electoral votes. I wonder whether all this might actually end up working in his favour, with some voters taking pity on him and creating sort of an underdog narrative.
