2024 U.S. Elections | Trump v Harris

It’s amazing that for large parts of their modern history Russia was the main enemy of America and your average person on the street would say they hated them, and now you have people cheering a presidential candidate for saying that he would tell russia do what they want. These are truly some strange times we live in.

It’s a total betrayal to all the clandestine rogue intelligence service films and TV shows I watched growing up that this cnut hasn’t been taken out by now. He’s a clear and present danger to the entire Western World. It’s also a damning indictment of the US legal and political system that years after literally attempting a coup he’s publicly supporting America’s enemies and looks likely to become president again. Truly absurd.

So let me get this straight. The US, spends decades, trillions of dollars and untold amounts of deaths fighting Russia and Communism/Socialism/Marxism only for a deranged narcissistic lunatic to just ignore it all and let Russia have at it and do whatever the feck they want?! To add insult to injury he's cheered and supported by the very people who before Trump even became a political figure, have and still are staunchly supportive of the US and their attempts to promote, defend or introduce their capitalist systems....

Ok then.

It is bad enough for Trump to actually say that.
But those who were cheering are just plain stupid.
Trump clearly has a problem with NATO and has previously threatened to pull the US out.
All of this is beautiful music to Putin ears.

Yes, but his supporters don’t know that. They literally don’t know anything other than Trump makes them feel good about being bigoted Christian nationalists. Politics in the US is now a sport, and Trump is their team. He is to them, what Arsenal is to Ty from AFTV.

I'm not really sure I understand this point. The Soviet Union ended over 30 years ago. Russia has basically nothing to do with Communism anymore.

But that's not true either. Both of these candidates have picked cabinets before. You might remember one of them being filled with people who have now written books or gone public about one candidate's sheer incompetence and traits that should prohibit rule.

These people have limited credibility for various reasons, among them that many insist they would not rule out voting for Trump in 2024.

Tell that to the current leader and former member of the KGB!

Did this actually happen? I'm trying to think of 'big' NATO countries at the time led by men, who might have conceivably thought an attack By Russia on them was viable?

UK: >2% of GDP. Not close to Russia.
France: Close to 2% of GDP. While in NATO, has historically struck its own path. Not close to Russia.
Germany: Led by a woman
Canada: Russia don't care.
Poland: >2% of GDP.
Turkey: >2% of GDP during Trump's time.

I'm struggling to think of another 'big' NATO country.

Not that this doesn't reflect his own thinking regardless of course but sounds like he's playing up to his own base with a made up story to me.

It's more like a kleptocracy. Putin's plan of reestablishing a kind of Soviet Union has nothing to do with communist ideology.

He wants to go back to the Brezhnev years, which is the era when things began to really go to shit in the Soviet Union. The kleptocracy started back then.

Not even USSR was communist. They had communist ideology completely twisted and corrupted. But nowadays Russia? Is a kleptocracy on a capitalist basis with fascist nationalistic views

Oh hey it's fascism o'clock.

So you think Russia is not a communist country?

Russia is ultranationalist and ultraconservative/reactionary. If you're thinking of communism as a purely economic ideology, there's nothing communist about the Russian state either. It's got a lot of fascist signs, though.

In those terms obviously not but then that has never been the case in any Russian Goverment

Not a trump fan but will support anyone who will secure the southern border. Importing criminals for free is the most self destructive madness the west is doing to itself. It's going to single handedly win him the re-election.

How much do you reckon we should we pay to import criminals?

He sabotaged the border bill, but is also going to fix it?

Okay then.

And no, if he wins, its not "single handedly" anything, try better.

That is what I was going to say. Right now, probably going a bit opposite of communism if anything.

Not quite.

Of course it’s a made up story, like most of the stories he comes up with.

This.

Really interesting that this time the GOP are following him on his anti-NATO stance. Last time you'd have lots of the GOP having 'not heard' the comments when asked about them.

Cult be culting.

I really feel like if the US elect Trump, Western European countries - especially the UK - need to seriously reassess our relationship with the US. If Trump gets in then it’s because a significant enough amount of voters actually endorse his politics and views, we can’t pretend it’s just a blip or a one off.

Whilst I am not saying that things should or will become actively adversarial with the US, Europe will need to become less reliant on them, especially for defence. It could also start to speed up the federalisation of the EU, as only a combined European entity will have the power and influence to stand up to the likes of China and the US (this is already my view - but Trump getting in could amplify and accelerate it all).

Someone that wasn't a mobster would've argued that they wanted NATO funding increases from member states to stop imperialist wars like Russia into Ukraine and how not "committing" enough would leave those states vulnerable.

But like the autocrat he is, it's all about extracting money, believing the strongest are the most worthy of admiration, and conquest is a natural part of existence. I have no doubt he'd actually provide intelligence and military support (no fly zones) if Russia went into places like Finland etc because "they weren't strong enough to resist". Just the same as his thoughts about prisoners of war, the weak shall be shunned and perish, the victor shall be supported.

The likes of the UK and the EU should do this regardless of who wins in November. Even if Trump doesn’t win, there will be another lunatic populist down the line. Trump has just shown them for what they are, and that is a country that could easily elect a far right populist again. Their election system is fecked up, and a large share of electorate are genuinely crazy.

I have always thought that at least in part the UK isn't in NATO to protect ourselves from an attack from other countries like Russia or China etc, it is in NATO to protect ourselves from an attack from the USA.

If the US leaves NATO the UK would have to think very carefully about whether to be part of a European defence force as the intelligence sharing/ bases/ wider Anglophone countries would also be put in a jam by an outright isolationist US.

Trump said all this last time and when in office he didn't go through with it. I expect the same thing would happen if he is re-elected.
