You don’t think we are in a different situation if the Dem candidate is elected like normal and has a full cycle to establish appeal and awareness.

Not really no. The Democrats have been appalling in their efforts to counter Trump. Years of lazy two party politics has left them powerless. Trump can make all his grandiose statements, hollow as they are, and the are countered with sneering and mildness. No real ideological or policy counter.

I really hope so and that we are all freaking out over nothing. I would love to raise my hand in a few years and say I was dead wrong…. But…. In 2016 Trump had some serious, career, politicians and congress had not gone full MAGA yet, so.. yeah.

You're freaking out over nothing. Us westerners have it easy compared to literally everyone else. They laugh at our hysterical reactions to stuff like this, well laugh on the inside because public displays of emotions could cost them dearly.

Seriously though, it's 4 years.

Without a doubt. Was obvious when Bezos stopped WaPo from endorsing and Zuckerberg was licking ass.
The polls predicted almost everything that happened. It's just some, and I'm not being a prick, preferred to read polls which favoured their candidate. 538 got this almost entirely correct, it just underestimated by about 3-5% the support for Trump across the swing states. Otherwise, none of this is a surprise to me (and no, I'm not and never have been a fan of Trump or supporter).

Would say one thing: the polls did the same shit they did in 2016 (which is what I made an allowance for and went for the pollsters which seemed to be on the same track).

Having a POTUS with direct access to a sycophant who has access to private data on millions of people worldwide is gonna be great I'm sure...Putin/ Netanyahu/MBS/Xi must be excatic right now.

Donald, Elon, Joe Rogan and Kid Rock eating Big Macs in the West Wing running the world.

That 4 years becomes 40 if he replaces Alito and Thomas. Lifetime appointments are bonkers.

Yeah it’s hilarious.

It absolutely is given the state of America. It will no longer be a superpower by the end of this presidency. Technology is advancing 100 times faster in the East and they will be left behind.

Yep. But there will be huge cultural effects. I know it will embolden lots of nasty elements of our society here in Europe.

An amendment is by definition part of the constitution so it can't be unconstitutional. Do you mean a law?

That is what I thought. I am just seeing any legal possibility for trump to last more than 2 terms. seems that is virtually impossible. 4 years and gone thats the only silver lining

So, so so disappointed. I had to believe that American voters weren't this gullible. A really long time ago in the darkest days of the Biden v Trump matchup I noted that basically encumbents are losing everywhere, because of the world's media ecosystem. Well here's another one.

Trump basically won on the promise that he'll get you back to when you were better in 2019. At no point. AT NO POINT in the whole cycle has anyone asked him how. And yet, he won.

I've no idea what to do with these voters. I believe that a majority of white women will have voted for Trump. How do you fight that?

The Dems could reform the Supreme Court in the future either by removing lifetime terms or expansion. It’s short of judges for the caseload as it is.

That’s great news for the rest of the liberal western world. Russia and China will be licking their lips.

The only hope I have is that 4 years of him will convince some of these voters of the importance of actual competency. He only won because somehow people have completely forgotten his first term. That won't happen in 4 years, of that we can be sure.

Plus the Dems can now pick the best candidate and start prepping.

But God, I honestly thought I'd wake up to good news.

That would require them to nuke the filibuster and those cowards won’t do it.

Correct. He could do it but it would be through extra judicial means.

The country could pass an amendment but we are so polarized and the process is so difficult that I don't think any new amendment will be passed in my lifetime on any subject.

People downplaying the repercussions of this are out of their mind IMHO. We know what damage was done when he still had some people around him who had an shred of independence. Now he will have more yes men than before and we know exactly what he does and intends to do. This is a watershed moment for the decent people of the world and as far as I'm concerned there is not even close to two ways about it.

22nd amendment only says a president can not be elected for more than 2 terms. lots of wiggle room for 5 Trump appointees to get to work.

Money is the root of all evil. That's basically it. It just comes down to people believing they were better off financially under Trump, and that outweighed all other negatives associated with him, his culture, his policies, his party, his cronyism, his bullying, his racism, his egotism.

Russia isn't an issue. They're already fecked. There's nothing that can bring them back economically.

I don't see how the rise of China is an issue for the western liberal world.

I am struggling to give a shit to be honest. Probably because I have had him as favouite to win for over a year now. It won't affect my life and I have always known the US to be a fecked up country. Just look at the "The Bad (Typically Gun...") thread. I feel for my two sisters living in the States though. Haven't spoken to them since the results started coming in but know they will be gutted.

I mean the Republicans had it all in 2016 with Trump as President and the world didn't end...so we'll probably be ok...right?

I don't think it's in any way alarmist to believe things will likely be substantially worse this time around.

Hard not to feel heartbroken for Ukraine right now.
My prediction is that Trump will exact revenge on Zelensky and Russia will have killed him in an air strike within the next year.

Who is taking over them? The usually suspects have leaders even more insane and more dangerous than Trump surely?

The past 20 years all I've heard is the US will no longer be a superpower. It's more powerful than ever despite is basically being a live action version of Team America

This is done...the polls underestimated trump once more
They actually got it right this time, down to the level of racial depolarisation with Latinos. We just don't believe them.

If he wins the popular vote it will be under 1%, it's the massive uniform swing of Hispanic concentrated area that swung the election to him, + further erosion with white non college.

It's basically a death sentence for the mainstream Dem electioneering strategy. The party of pro immigration and pro labour have just been told, by non college white and Latino men that they want none of it, they want tax cuts and aggresive border policies. It makes sense as well, we are just too blind to see it. Obama was the deporter in chief and pursued a conservative fiscal policy and he was significantly more popular with both groups.

You're clearly still living in 2024. China is living in 2124.

My wife is utterly distraught that her country has come to this. Looks like we'll be moving back to Australia before too long...
