2024 Summer Olympics (Paris)

Men's badminton final. Always fun with a sport you rarely watch - these guys are just insanely good.

for voleyball? fecking hell I actually hoped you crash out, would much rather face Japan in the potential final  but fair enough to defend four match balls!
I was Slovenian this morning

Anyways, watch the final will be France - USA now :(

French woman up on Mat B now. 1st French woman to win a Junior Olympic medal.

She seemed in total control. Did you see the one against the Moldavian and North Korean, they were flying everywhere?

Yes! That match was very entertaining

French wrestler looked solid!

My untrained eyes are impressed with the women in 68kgs, they look solid and energetic. It's been the best category to watch.

I'd argue badminton is a lot more watchable than tennis. So fast and technical, and not such a strong focus on the serve.

The best thing about Badminton is that each of the disciples Mens Singles, Mixed Doubles, Mens Doubles, Womens Singles and Women's Doubles are completely different tactically. You'll never see singles player turn up and play doubles like you do in tennis because it's way more specialised. And your pairing is critical in the doubles games - they don't just lump 2 good players together and hope for the best.

The serve is vital in the doubles games though - a good serve is a neutralising shot for the most part. Not so much in singles where you have a bigger margin for error on serve.

The serve is vital, yeah. What I mean is you can't really make a bunch of aces. It's more about setting up the duel, which is the part that is actually fun to watch.

The best athletes try to make as few as they can, to limit fatigue but most importantly, limit the risk of injury
First you said to conserve energy, and now its to reduce injury risk. In qualification they do usually 4-5 jumps, they're not exhausting thsemelves.

It's for classification, that's the main reason.

Got a Brit in both finals of the Kayak Cross, hopefully they both get medals. Joe Clarke's performance in that semi-final was perfect, dominated from start to finish.

I have never seen this discipline before but I was wondering whether his competitors were shit or whether he was just so much better, there was no contest whatsoever.

It's supposed to be new and Estanguet helped developing it.

Getting BMX vibes… you can dominate the qualifying but if Clarke gets a bad landing or hit he’s done for.

I think the latter, they're mentioned he's a 3 time world champion at this event. Might be both though

Absolutely, just look at his start to his quarter final where he couldn't get the power down at the start or that entire second semi and the ways people got screwed.

Kayak cross looks really fun to do (bar the roll and drop) but the strength you must need must be huge

It's a ridiculous discipline, it's closer to The Purge than the Olympics, but I'm all for it
I hope they do similar with other sports, make it so the other competitors can hit you with sticks while you're on the beam in gymnastics for example.

Yeah, and I qualified that in an earlier post. Conserving energy is for the final. In qualifying, it's about reducing risk of injury. The best will try to qualify in as few attempts as they can. Duplantis, for example, jumped twice, and only because his first height wasn't enough for qualification

I think he’s just got so much more power at the start, which means he’s already away and clear before they get to the first gate, so he doesn’t get caught up in all the shenanigans

Yeah it’s a good weight to watch. Very athletic women at 68kg, similar to men’s 74kg… Especially with it being freestyle. I shouldn’t be this way, but damn I get so bored with Greco

Yeah makes sense, but even at the first bouey they need to go around, they don't catch him, it's pretty insane how far ahead he was.

Poor indian, that injury ruined everything.

Yeah, I’m probably doing him a disservice. It’s a combination of his power and his pretty flawless technique, which means he gets ahead and stays ahead

This Indian wrestler is one tough woman. If she can hang on for just 12 more seconds. Her elbow or forearm is absolutely fecked.

Side note: I know the official on this mat. She officiates in South Carolina
