2024 Summer Olympics (Paris)

I'm convinced sailing is the most boring sport to watch. Nothing compares to it.

On the "never been punched so hard" thing, that didn't stop Ireland's Kelly Harrington beating the same fighter in the last Olympics. I'm sure all the controversy leading up to this was a much bigger factor in the Italian's decision than the power in any punch.
I think combat sports should be uniquely suited to dealing with such issues to be honest. They already divide across weight divisions, afterall. If a fighter really is so much stronger than the rest within their division, move them up. I don't think more physical tests for the athletes when it comes to combat sports is a bad thing
Khelif was born with XY chromosomes.
So? Still born a woman
No test results were ever made public for this and the Russian iba chairman was talking about "pretending to be women", which doesnt instill a lot of confidence over his impartiality. Khelif has always been a woman. She also has a rather average win/loss record.
That, plus the guy in question was forced to step down from his position due to cartoonish levels of corruption - i'm talking Blatter-era FIFA - and the organization he lead was so rotten the IOC no longer recognizes it as legitimate, either

Generally I think races are the best events, but the sailing is atrocious.

There's about 50 races for each event and they seem to spend half their time pissing about not actually racing.

That seems a bit mad tbh. If a fighter trains including hard to get their punching power higher than their peers in the same weight class they’re forced to move up a weight class? What about fighters with exceptional cardio? We also know that biological males have a physiological advantage in terms of cardiopulmonary capacity.

No no, i'm not saying force fighters to move up because they're much stronger than the division's average. I'm strictly talking about such outliers where letting them compete in their division becomes genuinely dangerous for their opponents - to a much higher degree than normal. I'm talking about really extreme outliers here

There'd also be no reason for fighters to complete these physical tests to the best of their abilities if performing well risked being bumped up a weight class.

I knew the UK had a major issue with transphobia in the public sphere but whew, this Telegraph writer's Twitter account is really hard to stomach. And by all accounts the athlete isn't even trans in the first place.

That's true. Still, it's already mad enough we even have these sports still, I think it's important to try and make them as safe as we possibly can tbh

Khelif's record isn't particularly impressive though.

It's not like she's undefeated, having won every match with a knockout after a few punches.

But champions are usually, by definition, outliers. Especially dominant ones.

It doesn't look like Khelif is really truly dominating the sport and destroying every athlete she comes across. Her record doesn't suggest that. At least, not in this moment in time. How exactly do we measure this and where do we draw the line?

Do you have a link?

Yes, I'm not talking about Khelif specifically here. I also think Pogue's explanation of the psychological effect from the controversy being more likely to blame for the Italian's decision to abandon here, than Khelif really hitting so hard her opponents can't stand against her. If if it's the latter, honestly, it's boxing. Check her gloves first

Allright, i'm not being paid to find solutions for this, that was just a random thought I concede it was a fairly stupid one

Read that now too yeah. The wording seemed extremely weird for someone from an "official" organisation.

Most Summer Olympics sports are a bit boring.
Yes, many are quite boring, but the fact you only watch them once in four years makes it much more exciting, especially if it's in beautiful surroundings/venues like Paris and even more so if there's something funny or unexpected happening, like the Turkish hitman competing with New Jersey mob in pistol competition. All those shooting sports, archery, diving, a large part of athletics are all ultimately very boring, but when it's on the largest scene and you see it means the world to the participants, it becomes exciting.

The same can't be unfortunately said about fecking nepobabies riding their horses, this stuff is always boring.

China pulling ahead of the pack with 11 golds. I know Team USA tends to catch up when the athletic competitions kick off, but they are 5 golds behind now and it seems like they underperformed in swimming, where they always rack up plenty of medals. I wonder who wins the whole thing.

The blue riband events are always super compelling, even if you don't give a shit about athletics most of the year. The fastest human being alive over 100m, 400m, 1500m etc That's good shit. Nothing in the winter olympics can come close.

Let's have an entire global sporting competition dedicated to different ways to slide down a mountain. What's not to love?!

Big fan of the snowboarding, mind you.
Why do you dislike all the BEST sports?!?!?

Also, Alcaraz is not real

I like snowboarding! It's the BEST winter olympics sport
Downhill skiing >>> the rest

I'm not just saying this we have one of the best downhill specialists of all time in Sofia Goggia

Just like I'm not a huge fan of swimming and alpine skiing because I have colossal, obsessive crushes on Sarah Sjostrom and Mikaela Shiffrin

Kayak single men’s final at 4:30 with Joe Clarke top after qualification. I feel that it’s actually a disadvantage to go last in the Olympic finals because you are waiting all the time watching others go and the nerves must be ridiculous

No doubt, I was more thinking about the boring boring part of athletics like the marathon or the walk. I absolutely love watching field events at the Olympics and find them super exciting, though there is no way I'd ever voluntarily watch the World Championship in javelin throw or high jump.

This canoe slalom is tense! brilliant drama! Czech favourite and champion from Tokyo just faultered - Brit coming up!

I like the chances of the guy currently top, he was under no pressure but guys coming up now are just under so much pressure

Team Great Bottlejob today. Unacceptable. (I'm overweight, watching on my sofa).
