2024 Summer Olympics (Paris)

Is there no chlorine in the pro pools? It takes me 20 mins to wash that shite off and even then the smell lingers with you for hours afterwards. In and out of the pool all day every day and taking showers in between must be quite miserable.

I don't seem to be missing much in the pool on the BBC these last few evenings?
Noticed they were interviewing athletes / switching back to the studio whilst events were still going on in the background so I ended up buying Discovery over the weekend, best £4 you will ever spend

Hoping the athletics is better on BBC as they have Michael Johnson, Denise Lewis, Ennis etc.. in the studio, most importantly they will have Steve Cram on commentary.

Love Wiffens! What a lovely guy and it is the first time I have seen him. Good for him and good for Ireland!

Unbelievable effort. He didn’t kick his legs until the last 100m!
...Have you ever swam in your life? :smirk: It's the 800 meters. Everyone only starts using their legs for the last 100m. They'd never finish otherwise

Yes I’ve swam. Competitively until I was 12. And at least half the swimmers in the race were using their legs long before the last 100m. I know this because I saw it happen.

Another rollercoaster win for Murray and Evans. 11-9 in the deciding tie break. If they can somehow beat the American third seeds in the QF, Murray’s last ever match will be for another Olympic medal.

What a performance by the 4*200 team. All six guys ( 2 swam in the heats) were insanely fast. Led from start to finish in both the heats & the final
James Guy 1:45:03
Tom Dean 1:45:20
Matt Richards 1:45:10
Duncan Scott 1:43:90

Do we know who they're due to face next in the tennis? When would they come up against Rafa & Carlos?

Why don't they let the two others on podium?
Bit hollow for them.

Great swimmers all of them

Let’s see if the American’s get through first. Been a few shocks so far.

Yes, I misread the draw and got ahead of myself. The Dutch pair aren’t exactly mugs, and they’re doubles specialists, so it’ll be another tough match either way

Scott swam 0.8 seconds faster than the 200m freestyle gold medal winner.

Yeah and James Guy who is here just for the relays was half a second quicker on the first leg than USA who had sent Luke Hobson who won bronze in the 200 free individual yesterday. Crazy performance

In the 800 meters? Nobody uses their legs until the last 100m. I mean, you could see this by the fact that nobody used their legs until the last 100 meters tonight(except for the tunisian when he was desperately trying to make up ground, and failed, because of course he couldn't last that long). Or in any other competitive 800m race

Dude. It’s an Irish gold medal. I watched it on Irish television. There’s been umpteen replays ever since, including a bunch after your post. I looked at their legs to make sure I’m not going mad. At least half the field were kicking their legs regularly from early on in the race.

And no, I never raced the 800m. I was only a kid. And this was when Ireland didn’t even have a 50m pool. I only ever swam short distances. The head coach at my club later turned out to be Ireland’s most famous paedophile. But that’s a whole other story.

OK let me put this better: the guys who swim for medals in this event don't start kicking with the legs(actually kicking, like they do in the shorter distances, not the occasional kick) until the last 2/3 laps(100/150m). Because kicking burns up a shitload of energy and in the 800 meters you won't have the energy to do more than that while being competitive. Which is why neither Paltrinieri nor Finke used their legs until the last 3 laps, like Wiffen. Which is perfectly normal for this race(and the 1500m too)

Ok, I get your point. And I’ll concede to your expertise. I wanted (most of) swimming removed from the Olympics two days ago! It was mainly a throwaway comment but, to my untutored eyes, it looked like Wiffen was kicking his legs a lot less frequently (I don’t think I noticed him kick them at all before the last two lengths) compared to the other swimmers. That’s how it looked to me anyway. Plus the Irish pundits (all ex swimmers) made a bit of a fuss about it too.

?? Romania wasn't in the race?
I think what he meant was that his time was 0.8 seconds less than Popovic’s time at which he won gold with. It’s not ideal because the splits here are from standing start but that’s still very fast
