2024 Summer Olympics (Paris)

Well, it turns out the USA *needed* Embiid afterall

Highly doubt it. Was all full of beans before the race but clearly tightened up going round the bend, and once he crossed the line in third it’s as though he couldn’t wait to start the theatre. Not before he’d passed it on to a few others through hugs first of course.

Maybe Im overreacting but I feel this should be a bigger issue. BBC said he was diagnosed on on Tuesday which means he ran yesterday in the semi finals with it too. Almost all the athletes in the 200m are either in the 100 relay tomorrow or the 400 relay on Saturday. Someone will catch it.

UPDATE: Here's what Noah Lyles had to say about his positive test for COVID and the decision to race the 200m final at the Paris Olympics.

“This is by far the best I’ve felt out of the last 3 days. I still wouldn’t say I’m 100%, but I’d definitely say I’m closer to 90-95%. Honestly, that only works for one shot, I only have one load to blow and then I gotta settle down for a while.”

If not competing tonight was a thought: “No, I was gonna compete regardless. If I didn’t make it to the finals, that would’ve been the sign not to.”

On whether the 4x100m is in the cards: “I’ll talk to the coaches and I’ll be very honest and transparent with them. I’m gonna let them make the decision. I think no matter what happens this 4x100m team can handle anything and everything. I’ve been with them in practice, they are more than capable to come out with the win and even break as many records as they set their mind to.”

Did COVID affect his performance: “It definitely affected my performance, I’ve had to take a lot of breaks. Junelle [his girlfriend] was saying I was coughing through the night last night. I thought I had a good night’s sleep, but she said she had to keep moving me throughout the night to make sure I would stop coughing. It definitely was an effect, but to be honest I’m more proud of myself than anything.”

Did Kenny Bednarek and the rest of team know: “No, we were trying to keep this close to the chest. Most of the people that knew were the medical staff, my coach, my mom, my family, we were trying to keep it as close to the chest as possible.”

After reading that it seems like a lot people knew about this but weren't too bothered by it, I just don't think it's right as you know there's a chance you might ruin someone else's games but I just they will do anything to win.

What kind of time would she achieve in 400m flat? Wouldn't that be considered a more prestige event?
I think they said that her time this eve would have just missed out on making the 400m flat final.

I think she will run the 400m hurdles until she runs sub-50sec (which is insane) and then will move to the flat (and get the WR there).

Unless I reading the wrong part kinda sounds like no one did outside of said people below. One would assume they would have to have known because sure staff would have said something plus he said as soon as he knew he quanteened himself in the US hotel. Surely the team mates would noticed but he's saying no one in the team knew.

Not the best run by KJT still in the lead though going into day 2.

Yeah hope she doesn't regret that tomorrow especially with how good Thiam is at Javelin. Her face crossing the line says I needed a bigger lead than 48 points overnight. Didn't help there was no one willing to push her in that race to run a quicker time. Not sure what time she needed to run for a 100 pt lead.

1) you need to watch Yazdani from Iran at 86kg. If it weren’t for David Taylor, he’d be in the greatest of all time conversation. He will be wrestling for gold tomorrow against the guy who beat the guy who beat David Taylor. If he wins gold, he’s the most accomplished wrestler in a very rich Iranian history in the sport & he might leave his shoes on the mat. The guy is Michael Jordan status there.

2) Also up tomorrow…
Dake is one of our all time greats. 1st 4x NCAA champ at 4 different weights. World gold, Pan Am gold, the only thing he lacks is an Olympic gold. This could also be his last tournament.

Serbs claiming refs bottled the game and gifted the game to US. I'm not so sure.

Will have an eye out on both, thanks!

British swimmer Pardoe still in contention to get a medal in the last lap of the 10k. He’s been in the leading group of 11 the whole race, who are now miles ahead of the rest. This has got to be the most brutal event in the whole Olympics. Not just the distance but the strong current of the Seine to contend with.

Just as I’m writing that, Pardoe has just fallen off the front group :(

The official advice is that you don't even have to stay inside anymore if you have Covid I believe, just take the necessary precautions? He was spotted with a mask before the race and they're running outdoors whilst on the track, no contact direct enough (let alone indoors) to pass it to another athlete imo. The only real health danger is with likely with himself putting that much stress on his body.

Pogacar had Covid right before the Tour de France and couldn't train in group for one day in total. There were riders who continued the Tour whilst being Covid positive. Think you just have to make your own assessment how bad it is and how much risk you want to take with it.

Ball clearly looked like it touched the line to me. Think that's enough or does it have to be completely over?

What situation are you referring to?
The backcourt violation in the last two minutes of the game. But I see now that I read your post wrong, thought you were saying that the refs bottled the game for Serbia.

They just kinda ran out of energy in the 4th and their shots weren't falling anymore like they were in the first three Qs when they were playing out of their mind. Those back-to-back 3-pointers by KD and Book turned the US deficit from 11 to 5 in less than 10 seconds, that was the real gamechanger for me.

I did not watch the lead climbing semi finals, but the guy who finished 2nd in bouldering apparently did so poorly in the lead section that he didn't even make the combined top 8!

Why is there such a discrepancy between the two disciplines? I can imagine that lead climbing requires more stamina, but surely the problems themselves are harder in the bouldering section?

As for backcourt violation it happens if any part of the ball is on the line or over as I understand.

Yeah, Serbia played a great game 3 quarters out of 4 but once US stepped up the tempo it was game over. Also the second Serbs had a 17 point lead (the biggest one) US cut it to 12 imidiately.
Also I dont get Serbia coach Pešić, Avramović had a great game, was shooting 3s and brought a great energy to the team, only to be frozen out the whole 2nd half.

Lacklustre long jump from KJT. She’s going to need to throw something huge in the javelin, or for Thiam to have a disaster, to still have a chance of the gold. She got a pb in the shot put yesterday so you never know

The lead is a killer because one mistake low down and you get a terrible score. You only get one crack at it so great climbers can end up with a very bad score in this format.

That said, climbers are often very specialised. Lead is mainly about endurance, bouldering mainly about power. Like 100m vs 400m. Both technically sprints but being good at one doesn’t mean you’re goood at the other.

By my rough calculations, if they both equalled their personal bests at the last two events then Thiam would win by about 10 points, so it’s still really close.

After you kindly explained the role of the course setters in boulder and how they test them yesterday, I can see the contest a bit differently now.

That ability to look at the wall and see their best route, which might not be the same as someone else's, is fascinating. But I'm starting to see that explains how some climbers can look at the wall and head straight up whereas others are having to do a more trial and error approach.

Yeah, exactly. It’s not just a test of athleticism. There’s a lot of thought required too. The routes you climb in bouldering are called “problems” for a reason!

Body shape is a big factor in different strategies. Tall climbers will use a different approach to shorter climbers on the same problem. But it isn’t necessarily easier being tall. Some moves suit shorter guys better. It’s so interesting (to me anyway!) watching all the different methods to climb the same boulders.

She's lucky Thiam doesn't get to her usual level. Should easily clear 1.95m on the high jump, and 6.41m on the long jump is 15-20cm below what she usually does. Bar one event, she's always jumped further than that since 2016 so definitely not in top condition either, it seems.

Javelin will be crucial indeed, KJT will gain points on Thiam in the 800m but whether she'll still have a shot will depend on the javelin.

Also tight battle between Vidts and Hall for 3th.

Yazdani was very impressive yesterday.
