2024 Summer Olympics (Paris)

Why are the American athletes so much better on the track than ours? Is it due to better facilities and coaching etc? We seem to have a handful of medal chances, they seem to have very strong chances in most of the track events

Obviously population is way bigger like with China
Have you heard of the NCAA? College sports are crazily funded and highly prestigious. Climate and facilities far better in the US.

Chinese girl jumps from bronze to gold with an olympic record in the clean and jerk, on the last lift of the whole event :nervous:

The talk of GB athletes underperforming is a bit daft…

Josh Kerr ran faster than he ever has before and broke the British record. Hudson-Smith runs a PB too and broke the European record. He ran one of the fastest 400m of all time. It’s a huge shame for them, that it hasn’t been quite enough for gold… but the idea they have underachieved is silly.

 stacked

Edit: that was way worse than I initially thought. Hope he's alright.

American dude went full tilt a bit early, had a got shot at it though. Gets bronze, or is it silver

It’s not about them underperforming. It’s about them continually being pushed into second place by the narrowest of margins. Those margins often come down the mentality, rather than just ability.

He went down with a right crash, commentators think knocked out?

Lucky the others managed to avoid him

Neither Kerr or Hudson-Smith lost because of a lack of winning mentality or whatever you want to call it. They just weren’t quite good enough despite putting in brilliant performances. It can happen. You don’t reach the level they have without dedication and unbelievable belief.

The obstacles in the steeple are a bit lame. Get rid of this shite event and replace it with a proper spartan race. Mud, carrying, crawling, climbing, fire and blood.

Totally agree. Both of those are ones where you just have to say someone was better on the day, both ran good races and it’s just tough to take when the margins are so tight.

GB overall has not hit the number of golds expected, and probably won’t now, but we’ve been spoilt in recent years and there’s nothing to suggest our overall model isn’t still the right one. Our overall medal total is still in line with norms, and we’re going to have Olympics that are less good than others. The fact we’re disappointed with 12 golds so far shows how much we’ve progressed in the last 20 years.

Barbed wire and...landmines too please

To be fair to Matthew Hudson-Smith he's just run the 5th fastest 400m ever, it just so happens that Quincy Hall ran the 4th fastest time ever in the same race.

No word on that fella who faceplanted in the steeplechase? They just brushed over it on commentary. He looked as though he got knocked out.

Commentator: "We don't want to show you pictures and replays of that"

Concerning

She has a beautiful wrestling.
I'm so glad to see her finally get gold. 3 bronze and 2 silvers over her World's and Olympic career & she's always just kept positive and kept pushing in the right direction. She started wrestling with her brother on their school team. Had to wrestle guys pretty much every match learning the sport. Another really great inspirational story for USA Women's Wrestling.

Nah, looking at it the wrong way round. America has about 5x our population and a ridiculous athletics programme.

Any GB athlete who gets second has done fantastic and given everything, physically and mentally… I wouldn’t doubt any of them, especially Hudson-Smith given what he’s gone through.

He’ll keep that european record for a long time.

Cameraman doing God's work there with the pole vault highlights.
