Also worried about how the all-powerful Green Party and the likes of Susan Sarandon will influence things.

Democrats flip Virginia ,both house and senate delegates. And governors race in Kentucky to close to call.

all billionaires are evil. seriously feck this piece of shit.

bill gates net worth minus 100 billion is still 6.8 BILLION dollars. go hang out with epstein more

Gates says it's "tricky" to recruit billionaires to sign The Giving Pledge -- especially so overseas -- because need to vet them. "I feel bad: We probably will at some point accept someone into the Giving Pledge and it will turn out that their fortune is a disreputable fortune."

Comedy gold.

if he lost 100 billion dollars in the blink of an eye he would basically have the same amount remaining as the entire gdp of kosovo
Not to be too technical but you do understand that being "worth" 100 billion doesn't mean you have 100 billion dollars :)

all fortunes of that size are disreputable. all of them are built on the blood of workers.
I wouldn't quite go that far but it's hard to imagine someone building a fortune that large without at least monopolizing the industry they're in (unless it's imagined billions of course; i.e Trump). Bill Gates was no choir boy when building microsoft.

Beto is going to take voters from him and Biden any time soon

Why ya'll gotta do Clippy like that.

Bill Gates' conditional philanthropy has always seemed really weird to me. Billy boy is how I imagine Thanos to be if I were ever made to watch Avengers.

How in the world do you correlate Bill Gates and Thanos

He's essentially saying that he is okay with doubling the taxes to him. Which is fine. A lot of billionaires try to avoid paying their fare share (under current laws), which is a bigger problem than Gates saying that he is okay with doubling his taxes, but not making them 10 times higher.

His net worth would have been double of that he has today, if he didn't give 30 billion to charity.

I am not saying that he is a saint, but he is the person who has given more to charity and has payed more taxes than any other person in the history. Your point is a good one, but the example isn't. Replace Gates with Bezos or Jobs.

No the point only works this way and you dont understand it. The point is the even with giving that much money he still has more money than when he retired and theoretically stopped earning money. The underlying point is that capital earns money on its own, independent of labor and thus ties into the larger point that no one earns a billion dollars they just accumulate it due to the system of rules we have set up in this country.

I don't get this whole Bill Gates is evil thing. The guy is a genius who revolutionized computing. He built an unbelievably successful company. He then retired and gave 30bn to charity. He's done an awful lot more for this world than some of the people complaining about how wealth is inherently evil. If somebody makes a fortune through legal, ethically solid means, using their own great ideas and hard work, what the feck is wrong with that? The rich should pay their fair share of taxes.....and I have a huge problem with those that don't.....but wealth isn't inherently evil. That's just small minded ignorance to say so.

It is a system that rewards the ideas and working smart, more than working hard (though working hard is a pre-requisite too). Sure, it is unjust and in an ideal world, billionaires probably should not exist, but that is a problem of the system, not of individuals. And Bill gates despite his immense wealth is actually one of the worst examples you can make.

If I build a startup and somehow it becomes very big and makes me a billionaire, I wouldn't suddenly become evil (by your definition), I would still be the same person I am today.

Btw, I actually despise Windows and don't use it, so not the biggest fan right there of Microsoft.

Wow those Gates quotes are really disheartening and disappointing. Expected a better response from him but I guess money trumps all.

Woe to the billionaires complaining. They don't even pay their taxes at the moment. My tax gets taken even before I know I have been paid. These guys spend tons of money not to pay taxes.
America needs a word with itself.

How can people be so detached from reality?

He did say he would be willing to double tax contribution, which when you consider he’s giving a lot of his money away through his foundation, is a good bit more than the likes of Bezos are doing.

Yep its a shitty system. But as long as its in place, I'm not going to rag on the guy who is funnelling vast quantities of that cash into charity work, and plans to donate the vast majority of his remaining fortune when he dies.

No it doesn't. He retired over a decade ago. Hes not working smart or hard or at all. That's what retirement is. And yet his net worth increased by $50 billion in 2019. That is what the system does. It rewards those who already have capital with ever more of it.
