Naa, he side stepped many questions and tried to deny many things Trump actually said.
It must be stated though that CNN's focus group were from Richmond, VA. A city where Kaine was the former mayor and a state where he's the former Governor and current Senator.

Kaine had to be better than Clinton which he wasn't.
I think Pence won this by being better than Trump as I don't think the vast majority listen to what they say.

In summary, Kaine did the job tasked to him by the Clinton campaign, which was to attack Trump. Pence abandoned Trump and barely defended him. At the end of the day, I don't think this VP debate changes anything as far as actual undecided voters go.
I don't agree with you on this. Kaine today didn't have to beat Clinton's performance. He had to do what was best for Clinton Kaine ticket. He went after Trump and in effect Trump-Pence ticket. Pence was put in a very uncomfortable position of defending Trump on all he said. While he defended him manfully on some issues, he couldn't defend him on his statements and side stepped plenty of times. See Biden Ryan debate if you think Kaine was aggressive. Biden destroyed Ryan by being aggressive.
I do in the short term. Normal business will be resumed at the next debate.
CNN polls call it a narrow win for Pence in a demographic that's Dem leaning.
I doubt we'll have meaningful polls and results after today and before Sunday's debate to show any bump due to the VP debate.

It would be extremely difficult to attribute a bump due to this debate, purely due to the last week Donald Drumpf had and the second Presidential debate 3 days after the VP debate.

The fact that people are saying Mike Pence won the debate, that some are saying that he came across reasonable or that he is even boring. His policies promote just as much bigotry as someone like Trump but, because he is an experienced politician he does it with less bluster.

That would be an incredibly low bar for Pence and virtually impossible bar for Kaine, considering Clinton massively benefited from an incoherent Trump again.

The debate wasn't about the VPs looking good. It was about making their candidate look good. And it seems, Pence didn't even bother defending Trump.

From catching up, it seems like he had to play out of character as an attack dog, which doesn't sound like his style. But, he did the job he was meant to do by putting Pence on the defensive, which he failed at. #thatmexicanthingagain is the soundbite that's going to matter from this debate.

From their strategies I can't decide a winner.
I'd say you don't have to worry about it, because it won't make a bit of difference anyway most likely. I'm going to watch some highlights later before making up my own mind, I've only read the reports and twitter so far. From the few clips I watched this morn, it seems like Kaine mostly did what you said but even missed a few opportunities to really stick it to him.

Would agree with that. He is using this as a stepping stone to 2020 if they lose.
