How did this even happen? Is it because, as many said here, people were too ashamed to admit they were voting for trump?

Interesting point being made on BBC that Obama's foundation has been great at getting Obama elected but for some reason very poor at getting his democratic party elected.
Reports of Afro American turnout not been the same as last 2 times this time as well. Seems like many wanted to vote for the black president but not democratic ones.

There's room in Australia here guys, come join us

Those privilege tweets do nothing but make me a little happy Trump won.

It's over. Big leads in Michigan and PA. and he has won WI.

I'm out.. delete this thread. Pretend it never happened

Nevada ending up more Democrat than Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. Bloody hell.

Bigly generalisation.

But anyone arguing that these results are not about racism has to at least own the fact that the margins of victory are small enough to be won by the far right vote. We can talk about how not everyone who voted for Trump, or voted for Brexit, is a raging xenophobe. Perhaps not even the majority (I say perhaps because at some point the enabling of those views is as bad as espousing them yourself). But without the raging xenophobes these victories wouldn't have occurred.

Liberals constantly telling massive portions of the population (many of whom are also liberals) about how privileged they are and don't realise it ad nauseam are just annoying those likely to agree with most of their arguments.

What colour is the wall going to be? Maybe Michigan and Wisconsin will get one to keep people from fleeing to Canada.

It's a good question. I personally think everyone would be a whole lot happier if they could even dream of buying a house and have a family where one parent can stay at home like their parents and grandparents mau have done. It's a pipe dream for most now, but maybe that is too niche and UK specific even.. I just think that's the most common real life hindrance to most people under 40 now. I'm sure I'm missing other reasons.
Yes and I sympathize, once life standards drop, people just don't like it. If you take away my internet and electricity for a week, I would be very very angry. That doesn't change the fact however that I still have a much better life than the majority in the world past and present. I think this is what is happening in the US and UK and large parts of Europe sadly. Standards have dropped but they dropped from an 8 to a 7 if you will whereas the normal average elsewhere and throughout history is barely 4 or 5. So of course to the former, it still feels bad and everything is wrong and change needs to come NOW. I sympathize with that, it is just confusing when that feeling is THAT strong that they would tolerate the likes of Trump or Farage.

Black people only make up like 12% of this country.

White people carried Trump to this victory.

The problem with that is one can pick out any group of people from a hat and say the election was won based on that group. Why racists? Why older people? Why the white male? because those groups youre allowed to pick on in this climate. You could say it was won because of left-handed people on the same merit. It just shows a prejudice against all people who voted for the opposite of you. I'm sure there are plenty of racists who vote the other way too.

I accidentally clicked on an alert for the 500k thread that was featuring gigantic sinkholes and didn't even realize I was in the wrong thread...

As a uni student in a Western country you're definitely right in a way. No one my age actually expects to fulfill any dreams they might have had as a kid, or the dreams of there parents. No one believes they'll get into the property market, have job stability, they don't know if they'll get married or have kids. It just seems to be very bleak for a lot of people under 40.

It's the third time it happened in the last year from my recollection. Obviously elections in Poland are not something anyone on here bar the Polish follow, but the party whose candidate won presidential elections last time were also not given a chance, he was supposed to be destroyed. These polls are getting less and less trustworthy somehow and it's hard to figure out why.

At this point I have no idea what she could have done. Trump did not really run a campaign and still won.

She's just a terrible campaigner in general. Lacks the minimum amount of charm and charisma required to get people excited.

After this year I never want to see a poll ever again.

I don't see what's the genius plan about making a tit out of yourself and being called out for it. She was right, as was most of the media in going after his character, values and bigotry.

And I saw Hilary speak here and there, and she was often very policy heavy everytime. It's the voters who appear to me to have failed to exercise their ability to have a moral compass, and exercise critical thinking. And there's a huge element of racism involved. There's no other reason to vote for the raging maniac.

I didn't describe it as genius. Far from it. But Hillary's arrogance blinded her. Her policy comments were light because she wanted to portray herself as Super St. Hillary. That was easy enough for Trump to show up and that was all he needed to do.

The raging maniac wasn't part of the political establishment, that's the biggest thing. Obama was beatified and despite the hope and change campaign, nothing much changed. I think that's a big factor, especially when Hillary could have focused specifically on how she'd make people's lives better, in detail. She made it about character.
