2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

Just fantastic this year, some say it's the suits.

There are a lot of parallels between skating in the Winter Olympics and cycling in the summer games. The Netherlands have typically been successful at both.

It just proves that funding and increased emphasis on certain events will eventually lead to success. Britain has done very well in the cycling in the past decade or so, and the technology, along with the talent, is said to be a big part of that.

Sloan alert: Sloan is currently Sloaning on the Beeb.

Holy shit are Sweden having the luckiest of times all over the sports right now. :D

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
Pony trekking or camping
Or just watching TV
Finland, Finland, Finland
It's the country for me

"The only thing that can cheer me up is violently crushing some protesters. Dmitry, call Yanukovych and tell him to open fire. Again."

Well, now that is interesting. Russia actually seemed to have caught a break in the seeding for the elimination rounds with being able to avoid Canada or the US (most likely Canada) until the Finals. But pre-tournement I picked Finland as a dark horse so go FINLAND!

Cheer up Vladimir, soon the NHL players may not be playing in the Olympics anymore and Russia can go back to dominating.

Bjoerndalen goes towards his 13th Olympic medal, unless we see a monumental feck-up from Svendsen. Great job by Berger and Eckhoff as well.

Apparently Evgeni Malkin had to tell the coach to pull the goalie and told Bobrovsky to get off the ice at the end of the game. Bush league management by the Russian coach.

Russia as a team never looked good in this tournament. Lots of individuals talent but even their coach looked lost.

I must admit I was finding the curling strangely hypnotic there
I even had to go off to wikipedia and check on the scoring system and how the hammer rule works.

What was the reaction to Svendsen nearly losing that gold to Fourcade? Great skis in that race...seem to have sorted things out.

I've noticed that NBC do the medal table according to has the most medals since they are topping that, yet in past Olympics I've seen them do it by number of golds if that puts them on top. Yanks are so fecking annoying when it comes to sport.

Don't think there was some big reaction to it. Though, I do remember one race between him and Fourcade which ended in a similar fashion, with Svendsen winning with only 0.1 seconds, after photo finish. Fourcade had the similar "stretched ski" move then. One would think if he almost lost once that way, he'd be more careful. :D

But great recovery for him after first three events.

EDIT: Guess I remember it slightly wrong. Was close sprint til the end.

It just looked like he came really close to losing it. Still can't believe that OEB missed three shots on the last round. I have to wait till tomorrow to watch the replays of today's races.

 It took about 4 games in for me to realise what the hell the hammer actually was. I still don't understand it fully. I'm still at the "go on, whack it inside that yellow one" stage.

Not sure about that Grinner usually in the US the table is sorted by total medals. That is how it has always been done since I was a kid . Now when I go to Eurooean websites it is usually dodone by gold medal count

I think it was Beijing where they started doing it by golds. I posted about it on here because I thought it was so pathetic.

. Maybe they were showing it both ways. Like I say the standard in the us has been the table by total medals for as long as i can remember. Though sometimes they will focus on golds for a moment then switch to total

Watching the snowboard cross last night was great to see all 3 medalists celebrate their accomplishment. Yeah a bronze is 3rd place but 3rd best in the world at something is still a great result.

Snowboarders all seem to be friendly with each other across nationalities. Must be something in the air...It's definitely the best event at the games for excitement and unpredictability.

The table should be weighted rather than just sorting by gold or total. A gold medal is worth 3 points, silver 2, bronze 1.

With that, Russia is currently top by one medal over the USA and Norway.

Looking back at Beijing China pretty well ran away with the Gold Medal count 51 to 36 or something like that. One the overall I think the US edge them by 10 or so. So if NBC switched it around to focus more on gold, well then they must have been focusing on how well China were doing.
