There speaketh someone who's never watched a whole game of curling. There's no escaping once you're in.

I'm alright with birds doing ice-sweeping but why would any red-blooded male take it up?

The Norwegian team that won the Silver in Vancouver in 2010 basically did it as a hobby. There is pretty much no other sport where you can compete in the Olympics and not be a professional. Now curling players are beginning to go professional too, but it's not like you have to be some great athlete to do it.

That's fair enough and it gives you a chance to mix with all them hot women curlers. It's kind of the same as blokes doing ballroom dancing. They almost always have fit wives/GFs.

I get how you can think it's boring, but how could it not be a sport? Those ski and shoot ones are as good athletes as anyone in the Olympics, winter or summer.
It is a sport, not saying otherwise. But I do find it very boring, although that's totally a personal opinion, and I understand if some find it interesting..

Don't get the point in the shooting part though and how it makes it a separate sport by firing 5 bullets in the middle of the race.

I have to admit I find cross country pretty boring too, I basically only watch it in the background if we're winning. And we usually (but not always) are, in the Olympics. I only ever watch it every four years. I don't know where Biathlon came from, but honestly it's remarkable how much more exciting the shooting makes it. In cross country skiing you rarely have big changes during races, and really only ever from someone doing a lot worse suddenly. In biathlon you can change your luck in the span of a few seconds. It's also why I much more prefer the cross country relay to regular cross country. It's not just the same people doing the same thing, it can change.

They are very much different, though. You very rarely have people who can do both. We did a few years ago, but they're nearly always separated. Considering how big an impact the shooting has, you can't just have someone who is really fast on skis. It's not easy shooting 5 targets after having done 10 km.

At most they are doing 4 km.
(well, before each shoot)
But still, they have heart rate of 150+ beats per minute, it's tough to calm enough to have a great shoot. Boe had 201 beats per minute last year even.

I have to admit on my part that I haven't watched that much of it to be honest, so my first hand impressions (about the difference between the two sports) might not be accurate. I just keep imagining it like football, where the two teams have to play a game of chess at half time. It sounds a bit weird, but probably only if you're not into the sport.

But shouldn't that be the most important thing in a skiing event?

It's like stopping a long distance race at the half way point to engage in a game of horseshoes.

This used to be a military training event, so it shouldn't be too hard a concept to grasp.

It's like wondering what all those gates are doing in the way in the 400 meter hurdles event. Shouldn't it just be about who can run the fastest?

Snowboarders all seem to be friendly with each other across nationalities. Must be something in the air...It's definitely the best event at the games for excitement and unpredictability.

Most of them are friends outside of competition, they'll all ride for a lot of the same sponsors as each other and spend most of the year filming videos with each other, competing isn't the be all and end all. It's nice to see.
