2012 Baseball Thread

White Sox beat Royals 9-8 after 14 innings. It's 6:36am. I need a different back-up sport to football.

Ichiro to the Yankees, I know hes nowhere near what he used to be but as a fan I love it.

Yanks gave up very little, improve the defense (gets Ibanez out of LF), add some speed, and will only cost 2mil this year. There's very little downside. I know he is declining, always the possibility that being on a competitive team with some protection for the first time in a decade will improve him. I like this move.

About five years too late for Ichiro-to-Yankees but nonetheless it's a decent acquisition. He's a free agent at season's end.

Texas is trying to pick up a pitcher or two, and not sure if confirmed yet but talk is Lewis is out for remainder of season which is a massive loss considering how bad the rotation is past Yu and Lewis.

Yeah they gave up someone who's been DFA'd twice this season already & a pitcher that might be a long relief/mop up guy with Seattle paying most of the salary, nothing to not like.

Then again I would take anything over seeing Ibanez fielding, just hope we can get the road Suzuki instead of the home one and he will be fine, I mean hes only gonna be in the bottom of the lineup anyway.

Fair enough. I've been a fan of the Sox since 1986 and this won't change that. Didn't like it though.

I'm a Melky fan, thats really dissapointing news.

I see the Red Sox are tearing each other apart behind closed doors again though, somethings gotta change there.

Felix Hernandez also just pitched a perfect game against the Rays, absolute filth throughout.

HUGE potential trade between Boston and the Dodgers is looming.

--The Dodgers and Red Sox are closing in on a deal that would send Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles, though a few hurdles remain before it's official, multiple baseball sources said Friday.

Pitcher Rubby De La Rosa will be headed back to Boston as the centerpiece of the deal, sources say. De La Rosa made his first major league appearance of the season Wednesday, having had Tommy John surgery about 13 months ago. Also included are first baseman James Loney and prospects Ivan De Jesus (infielder) and Jerry Sands (outfielder), according to sources. Top prospect Allen Webster, a right-hander, is also part of the deal.--

I'm already yearning for the McCourt glory years :(

Even if the Beckett & Crawford contracts are a high price to pay, it seems like it's hardly going to impact their chances of future big money free agent signings with this monster tv deal on the horizon. Not ecstatic to see A-Gon back in the division either.

Yet to read any commentary on it, will losing Gonzalez just to clear so much off the pay roll seem worth it to Red Sox fans? Guess it depends how much money they're sending too.

I think most Red Sox fans will be upset by losing A-Gon but accept that its a no brainer in order to shift what they have managed to shift, also a case for A-Gon's power numbers looking to already be on the decline but NL baseball should help that anyway.

This isn't so much a massive win for the Red Sox front office as a massive face palm from the Dodgers. I can understand they want to get better quickly and compete this year but how they took those players, gave up prospects AND took on 95% of the contracts is just lunacy.

Red Sox probably go a couple of ways from here if it goes through, they could go for the Grienke, Swisher, Hamilton type guys in free agency or they could hold pattern and try and patch them up for 2013 and look for favorable trades. Personally I think that puts them out of contention for 2013 but they could be very strong in a couple years time if they play it right.

End of the day they shifted $260 million in payroll, got 4 prospects in return, rid themselves of a declining pitcher, a newly had TJS outfielder that was underperforming on a monster contract and a utilty player. The only bad out of this is losing A-Gon but the pros far outweigh the cons on this deal for the Red Sox.

no red sox fan cares at this point. after last seasons beergate. lack of effort or professionalism this season. fenway is sold out but there are empty seats everywhere. ST holders selling off entire weekend games. TV ratings in the shitter (like the team) last straw the disrespect shown to johnny pesky for his funeral. the club had 4 buses for the team to use. 4 players showed. they complained of being tired. they then went to becketts bowling event. feck em. go Nats. I'd rather fly the hour to DC than drive the hour to boston. shit team shit attitude. they can all get traded. fans are sick of $80-200 a seat for that shit.

and no this is a massive win to dump all three of those contracts. yep agon was a bit of class but it's like loosing a finger to get rid of cancer , get the fecking knife.

i hope the fans leave in protest in the middle of a game.

Perhaps in light on the "textgate" Gonzalez had to go. I mean laying blame on a player that had already been traded is not leadership material. The text to arrange a meeting came from his phone so don't claim someone else used your phone.

Becket had become a cancer and Crawford was just an overpaid player not living up to the contract (that Cashman forced Boston into, lol).

As for the Dodgers, rumor is this is all about a tv contract and generating hype to get more money out of it.

Was this team worse than the "25 men, 25 cabs" '89 Sox?

that was one of those teams - they were like that in the late 70's too. nope they all showed up to bowl as a team. just not for a guy's funeral a guy that gave about 60+ yrs of his life as a part of the team

Many thanks for the thoughts, didn't know it had got even worse at Boston as I hardly ever manage to look outside of the division. Sad stuff.

Dodgers new TV deal is indeed meant to be a monster, I read one projection of 20years/$4bn. They already have $193m committed in contracts for next year. Starting to get a taste of what it's like for fans of those other AL East teams. Well it's even worse seeing as it would be unlikely for any of them to be swept by the Padres twice in one season  I love in American sports that with the draft and team controlled contracts, there's at least always a chance to stay competitive.

White Sox looking good for the AL Central, took the first of four against the Tigers last night, three games up. If they can take two of the last three, looking really good.

My Tigers won the last two against the White Sox. Verlander faces Sale tonight, if the Tigers win the division is tied.

I can see we have a White Sox fan here. I'm not sure how you watch games but if you do watch Hawk Harrellson, what is your opinion of him?

Great matchup tonight, hope Sale shows up, been a little shaky lately. Though Verlander has too.

I love Hawk, I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but I watch some other broadcasts and they're so dry and desperate not to show affiliation to their team, I guess because they're angling for jobs at the major networks. I can definitely understand how people would find him irritating but I think he's great.

I don't hate Hawk as much as the rest of the league. I'm okay with his cheering for his team. He's not Vin Scully but cheering is fine. Every announcer has catchphrases so I'm not too bothered by that either. The one thing that really gets me is his rants about umpires. In general, I think umpires get way too much stick but hearing Santangelo (Nationals broadcaster) and Hawk rant this year has driven me crazy.

Went to the Oakland game in 06, when Mags hit the home run to win the series. Insane atmosphere. I'll never forget seeing the ball off the bat, and the whole crowd around us knew right away, and so did Mags IIRC. Seeing Polanco celebrating while running the bases was awesome. I miss that giant heed so much!

That was my best memory from that year, better then remembering Inge strike out to end it.
