2012 Baseball Thread

Buster Olney (I think) said this injury might actually extend his career as he will not want to go out like this, will rehab and come back stronger, and with a year off on his arm, basically like a short retirement.

Fantastic news, not that we expected anything less from him.

First night nerves a bit I think but Robertson has always walked guys, he just tends to strike out the next ones to strand the runners. If he repeats or improves on 2011 then he will be just fine and probably the long term closer, I've always rated the guy so I feel pretty comfortable about him being there.

One thing too he appears to have started to develop a cutter, probably influenced by Mo so its all good signs.

agree was very impressed with him.

Looks pretty young too. Not sure how old he is.

But Soriano before him was very good too.

ARod hit well and the rest looked good too.

Hoping this will help the Yanks refocus and go for the title...but Rangers really look unbeatable atm.

And D-Rob blows the save  Transistion takes time, he's gotta cut down the walks if he wants the job permanent.

Hamilton's having a monster opening, carries on like that and the Rangers are gonna be hard to beat, especially with Darvish looking good.

Anyone else want to join the redcafe fantasy league so we can actually start it? We need 1 more team to get it going, pretty easy to draft now considering its a month into the season and you know who's hot and whos not.

two more for josh last night. cj wilson starting again today. he has a chance to lose two games in a row on consecutive days. bet that hasn't been done since...maybe ever.

Hamilton's 4 HR game only the 16th ever...one of the rarest feats in baseball.

Perfect games: 20.

Unassisted triple plays: 15

5 extra-base hits in one game: 5
whatever that means

2 Grand Slams in one game: 10

The Rangers have played like shit over the last two weeks. Suspect pitching again. Giving up 21 to a weak hitting Mariners squad and 12 to the woeful A's last night (while getting no-hit through seven innings).

Extra bases refer to anything past first, so it means any hit that's bigger than a single (i.e. a double, triple & home run are all extra base hits).

Ugly season for the D-Backs but it seems like this current infighting crisis has mostly been cooked up by the press. Kirk Gibson upon being asked what he'll say in the team meeting he's holding today - "Well it’s a team meeting, it’s not a media meeting."

My team, the White Sox, are on fire. Got a tasty 20/1 on them to win the AL Central too a month back. 23/10 now, Detroit Tigers are still 4/6 to win it despite being 6 games back (maybe 7 after tonight) and 6 under .500. Looking like the Sox are dropping the first two to the Blue Jays though, Konerko's played neither.

The caf hates baseball, 2,000 posts in last year's NFL thread, 1,500 in this years NBA thread, and 57 in this.

Disgusting isn't it Feeky? Meanwhile, the American League East is such a tight division. Boston (my team) is in last place and they are only 4 games out of first place. Interesting races so far.

There is zero coverage of Baseball in the UK, probably even Europe so thats mostly why.

Still in the hunt after a woeful start, have improved nicely. Still expect Yankees to take that though despite their difficulties. Don't think anyone would have predicted the O's to be top at this point, just like the White Sox.

I can get probably more coverage of the MLB here than the NFL or the NBA, there's a live MLB game on ESPN America (free with our TV package) most nights.

That's true I guess for those that have ESPN but baseball has zero media coverage here, its just not a widely popular sport for whatever reason. The reason I got into baseball is because of Channel 5's one night a week live game now there isn't even that, yeah MLB.tv is great but for the casual or new fan they probably won't go hunting to find baseball coverage.

Well unless you grew up involved in the sport or watching as a fan it comes across extremely boring to the novice viewer. Pretty much the same attitude most Americans have towards football (soccer).

That's a great observation. I have often felt that many of the discussions I have read or taken part in about baseball mirror so well discussions had about football (soccer).

Yeah I'd agree with that. Doesn't have the immediate entertainment for the casual viewer like NFL or NBA. Great sport when you get into it though. Thinking of getting one of these bad boys, 'kin expensive though.

Meanwhile, walk-off White Sox winner, 1.5 games clear in the AL central.

What is ticket avaliablility generally like in baseball? Going to California in aug/sept, will I need to book tickets In advance or will we be able to pay on the gate?

Strasburg is ridiculously talented, 13 strikouts in 6 innings at Fenway and he puts those sort of numbers up seemingly every week now. I really hope he stays healthy from now on, he is something special and its great to watch.

Watched it, he was quality. Just as impressive as his 13 K's was getting himself out of a bases loaded, one out situation in his final inning, after 100+ pitches.

Nice little 10/1 accumulator for me tonight - Yankees, Phillies, Nationals and Reds. Only Reds left me sweat, winning after 10.

White Sox losing at home to the Astros, who are 6-19 on the road. 12 hits to 5 but trailing 3-5 in the bottom of the 8th. Still think they might pull it out though.

EDIT: Or not. Lost 8-3, 12 hits to 8. Horrible result.

Combined no-hitter for the Mariners! Using 6 pitchers no less. Second no-no in a week.

Just catching up on the Nats/Sox game. Strasburg unreal but what about Bryce Harper he has a 131 OPS+ and a 25/17 K/BB at age 19.

Matt Cain perfect game! Second this year after Phillip Humber. Unbelievable (even if it's the Astros).

Tickets always available for most teams. You should not have any trouble showingup on game day for any west coast team.

Rangers with the best record in baseball but they're injured and not hitting on all cylinders. imagine how dominating they'll be when they get healthy and get their shit together.

Same could be said for the Yankees. Much tougher division and bad injures. To think if the Yankees actually hit with RISP in May Yanks would have a big lead in AL East. That said Rangers still the best team in baseball though Yankees not far behind.

Best division or not but Texas owns the Yankees of late. Most would definitely give the edge/pick Texas in a series.

White Sox thump Rangers 19-2 yesterday and win 5-4 in extra innings today. Youk looking really good in pinstripes.
