2009 Baseball Season

2 and a half behind the Jays its getting better with Wang, Nady and Jorge due back in the next couple of weeks

Going to the Cards vs Cubs game tonight. One of the better rivalries in baseball over the years.

Lets hope the Cards can complete the sweep of those damn Cubbies.

How's the new Busch Stadium?

Another walk off win for the Yankee's, instantly a better side by the return of A-Rod, I enjoy the pie's in the face.

Damn man my Sox can't close out a game against these Mets, I hate the sour history we have when we play them in Interleague... and let's not forget about '86 now :nervous:

Blue Jays are starting to sink. They will be a few behind by the time the all star break comes round....

fecking did anyone see Texieras homer today? Broken bat, and it didnt just make it it was cleared

Yea, that was insane. It's amazing how well he's hit since Arod joined the lineup. Tbf, he's always been a bit of a slow starter though.

 How the feck did he do that? It was mental, glad he is in my Fantasy team.

Tex-Arod is quickly becoming a very strong 3-4, once Arod gets right in the swing of it thats a frightning pairing, especially with Damon also hitting well.

This kid is making saves, and now, he's gone LeBron on the sports world, making it on the cover of SI before he's even considered his future:

Bryce Harper punches his ticket to Cooperstown at age 16

By 'Duk

I have no idea if there's a difference in pressure between having every baseball wonk following you around at age 16 and having every sports fan in the country learn your name, but I suppose Bryce Harper will soon be able to tell us.

Following in its grand tradition of predicting can't miss future superstars like Schea Cotton and Tamir Goodman, Sports Illustrated is using the cover of this week's magazine to tout the 16-year-old Las Vegas resident as "the most exciting prodigy since LeBron."

Writes SI's Tom Verducci:

"Still only 16, Harper stands 6'3", weighs 205 pounds, has faster bat speed than Mark McGwire in his prime and runs so fast that he scored on wild pitches six times this season from second base. As a catcher he picks off runners from his knees, and when he pitches, he throws a fastball that has been clocked at 96 mph.

"When James was 16, he was a high school sophomore with an NBA game and a body to match. Harper has been compared to Justin Upton(notes), Alex Rodriguez(notes) and Ken Griffey Jr.(notes), each a freakishly advanced high school player and each the top overall pick of his draft. But Harper, say the baseball men who are paid to make such assessments, has the ability as a sophomore that the aforementioned trio had as seniors."

Whether or not Harper will eventually save SI from the limb it just walked out on remains to be seen, but it should be said that Harper certainly believes he can.

"Be in the Hall of Fame, definitely," says Harper when asked by Verducci about his goals. "Play in Yankee Stadium. Play in the pinstripes. Be considered the greatest baseball player who ever lived. I can't wait."

Under normal circumstances, I'd say it's getting ahead of ourselves to point out that he doesn't mention winning the World Series as a goal or that he'll likely have to play the first several years of his career for a team not named the Yankees before his current "adviser" Scott Boras negotiates the first billion dollar contract in MLB history.

But since we're talking about a kid who's hitting 570-foot home runs and already has a frame that looks like it was constructed by a team of uber-intelligent robots, why not get a little crazy and predict that Harper will finish his career by passing Barry Bonds'(notes) home run mark, Pete Rose's hits mark AND Cy Young's wins total? Of course, that'll only be after he hits .400 in a season, hits safely in 57 straight games and throws eight no-hitters ... in the same year.

Sox whipped the Yanks 7-0 last night at rainy Fenway. Another game on this evening. We are 6-0 against the stinkies this season. Oh, it's getting too too easy

Jays fan here, quite impressed with our start this season. Faltered a little from that initial start, mainly due to injury of the pitchers and some poor form from Rios/Snider and a few others.

Hopefully Riccardi will get Doc's extension sorted out asap, without him i think we would be bottom of the AL East. However i do wonder sometimes that if AJ stayed we would have no problems getting into the play offs.

fecking A, ARod is 12th on the all time HR list, he is gonna be No 1 all time when he hangs it up. The real question is whether or not he will ever win the World Series

Or if the record books and fans will accept it as legit.

Hank Aaron until the day I die, will be my home run king.

He played at a launching pad, I give him the record no doubt over that twat Bonds though. But the best home run hitter and player hands down all time was The Babe

Babe Ruth > Hank Aaron though?

My great-grandfather always used to talk about how when the Babe played in Boston, nobody would dare move or make a sound when he batted, you could hear the man spit from the streets because everyone anticipated something special... when he failed, the rare time, they would all take off their caps and still salute the man.

When he pitched and hit for the Yankees in Boston, everyone did the same thing.

He oozed class and status, it's a shame that baseball hasn't seen the likes since Cal Ripken Jr. retired.

As for Hank Aaron, my grandfather and mother used to love him growing up and would never ever put another player above him regardless of statistics.

I wouldn't have Aaron in my top five players

Babe Ruth
Lou Gehrig
Ted Williams
Ty Cobb
Willie Mays

Well getting closer I guess, its the rotation thats not quite backing up the hitters right now.

Bold, but with the company you place above him it's not hard to accept that.

I'm glad Okajima cleaed that mess double R put us in after Wake came out... hopefully Paps comes in and cleans this up.

BIG fecking win again.

All I know is the new york papers are fuming with the performances from Wang, and there seems to be ALOT of lost faith in this team so early on.

Double-R REALLY let us down last night, Paps should never have thrown a ball last night.

I don't see why they are losing faith, ok not beating the Red Sox into June is not good but its not the end of the world. The batting line up is still very good, we just lack one consistant starter who can get through the early innings without making the batting chase the game. CC, Joba and Burnett are great and will have off days ofcourse but I feel less confident seeing Pettitte on the mound as I used to especially since he seems to tweak his back every game.

Wang has been shocking, some of the stuff he has thrown I think I could have hit and I have never hit a ball in my life. I dont know what his issue is though, bad season or dwindling talent?

Injury, and I remember the Times making multiple statements about how mentally Wang looked drained during his re-hab.

I didn't write the Yankees off last year and I never will, and I agree with your sentiment that this losing faith in this ball-club is a bit pre-mature.

They should just go let him play some minor league for a stint or limited relief, starting him until he might improve is a big risk. Hughes looks like he can step up too.

I'd rather let Wang sort it out in the starting rotation. Sending him down would show a huge lack of confidence in him, and he already seems a bit down in the dumps mentally. I fully believe he'll be back though. He's too good. I watched his 2nd (or was it 3rd) most recent start and he was brilliant the first couple innings, but once there were a couple of runners on base he seemed to lose focus and control.

Hughes really is tough to decipher. One game he's brilliant, the next he's utterly wank. I don't think he's completely ready for the big time tbh. It'd be great if he could become consistently solid though, because then we could move Joba back into the set-up role. Don't know if Joba would like it, but it would be a huge boost for the bullpen.

And I don't listen to criticism from the New York media or fans. Both are terrible.

WOW its 5am bur I just saw Mo get his frist RBI then his 500 save.

Congratulations Mo the greatest closer ever.

As a Red Sox fan I give my kudos... been a great opponent and a respectable one as well over all these years.

It's hard to give a Yankee his respect given the rivalry, but it takes a baseball fan to admit this, and I and many in the Red Sox camp can surely.

Well, we topped Baltimore last night and we are 3 1/2 games over the Yankees. On the down side, Mike Lowell has been put on the DL so we shall seen how third base pans out. It is a long season sports fans.

All kinds of options, remember we have Lars anderson ready to step up soon as well, wouldn't be shock/gasped if we called him up at some point... but as typical Tito is, Bailey gets the call up

Mind you he's played good at Paw, but we all know Youk will play at third and Kotsay at first, waste of a roster spot if you ask me, BRING UP LARS ANDERSON !!!!!
