Gaming 1836 - The Europa Universalis 4 Experiment (Hands-off) - Map & stats in second post - Final Map and Stats update - Timelapse video

Cheers @hobbers for finally making me relevant. Hopefully we push on now and take some more of that central European land.

Might have taken it a bit far with changing religion though, I expect that to cause issues somewhere

@nimic by any chance is my upturn in fortunes due to finally getting a ruler with stats above 3?

You're not at the bottom of the average ruler rankings, but you're closer to it than the top. Libero P-Nut is a pretty good 4-4-4, so it doesn't hurt.

Fingers crossed.

You lost the green-striped provinces, I'm afraid! But at least it only cost you like 180k casualties (and the same on the other side).

I just got into this game. Any of you nerds have a good little rundown of things I want to be mindful of as a beginner? I have experience playing Stellaris.

This is highly complex grand strategy game so it is hard to sum tips (because everything is important).
I can tell you few tips for specific country with which you decide to play.
My advice is Spain. Best country to start for a noob.

Look at @Solius. Never played a game and he is dominating a world right now with Spain:lol:

Ideas (these are basically upgrades you can take that come in Administrative, Diplomatic and Military, using the currency generated (generally) by the skills of your ruler. They're one way of measuring how well you're doing that doesn't necessarily relate directly to your number of provinces or the size of your armies. If you're conquering a lot you'll probably use a lot of Administrative power on making the new provinces cores, so maybe won't have as much to spend on new ideas)

Everyone is at 42 (max for the tech level), except:

38: Walrus
34: Shakesey

Most developed province You use Monarch Power to develop these. It gets more expensive to increase the higher it is.

I just noticed I should probably have done the stats backwards, with the number first and then the name. I'm way too resistant to change to fix it now, but I'll make a mental note for any future Experiments.

Country updates to come later tonight.

Finally on a list, but it's army losses

Given that the others on the list are all in the top 8 (minus Bootsy) I'm going to take it as a positive

Also me being orthodox really stands out on that religious map, fully expect one of the religious nuts to have a pop soon.

I just got into this game. Any of you nerds have a good little rundown of things I want to be mindful of as a beginner? I have experience playing Stellaris.

There's a LOT of mechanics (as you'd expect from Paradox games). The wiki is very helpful. https://eu4.paradoxwikis.com/Europa_Universalis_4_Wiki

As Andy said, Spain (Castile or Aragon) would be a good choice for a beginner. A lot of variety with play there.

Have fun!

Looks like I finally took over those pesky Swiss. Worse comes to worse I'll hide in the alps.

Huh, Ireland is pro level. Don't do it.

This is a guy with good tutorials.

I think you're aiming a bit high for a complete newbie with that guy. I don't think watching him is going to make anyone learn the game at a basic level.

Edit: unless he has some videos that are specifically for new players?

He has. About game mechanics. Nevertheless, Ireland is not a country with which you go and learn stuff.:D

Cheers for the link!

Tutorial made me Irish, so potatos not paella for me in my first playthrough ;(
Here's is a super-duper simple list of the bare minimum you should do when you begin:

Pause
  • Send your merchant to the nearest trade node
  • Set your rivals and send your diplomats to make alliances and improve relations
  • Set your monarch point focus
  • Mothball your cogs and forts
  • Set army maintenence to 25%
Unpause
  • Max your army and navy to force limit (not beyond)
  • Send a diplomat to country you want to invade, build a spy network of 20 and fabricate a claim on a province
  • Set army maintenance to 100%
  • Activate forts
  • Attack
  • Peace - demand territories
