Gundogan is now the player I want us to get most. Him and Herrera infront of a strong DM would absolutely dominate the premier league. He's absolutely perfect for this disciplined posesion based game we are now playing unlike Pogba who may be a bit too adventurous.

£15m is an absolute bargain. That's how much Joe Allen went to liverpool for...

Don't think there will be too much completion either as Barca have a transfer ban, Madrid/Bayern well stocked in that position and PSG probably waiting for Pogba.

Indeed

He was on course to being a £45m transfer before the injury, so if there's even a 33% chance he can get back to that level or thereabouts, it's a good deal.

(I suppose you could also model a probability curve of value against whether he gets back to his best or does a Hargreaves and work out the exact expected value of this deal, but that would require a) much speculation and b) integrating.)

I googled him and all the latest stories seem to be about him going to arsenal and Dortmund rejecting 19m for him? Disturbing news

I watch Gündogan since he played for Nürnberg.

I then thought it was really special that a young football professional from a migrant family is so keen on doing his A-levels paralell to his first years in the Bundesliga. His parents came to Germany as kids or teenagers but his parents seem to really have valued education and tried to give him and his brother (I do not know if he has more than one brother) an education.

Here is an interview in German from 2011 when he was still in between doing his A-levels. (google-translator might be your friend)

Pm this to PhaseOfPlay and it's done.

At £15m it's a no brainer really. He might never get back to his top form but the signs since return have been positive and he is still very young for a midfielder so there will be plenty of time for him to reach his previous level. If we can get him back to 2013 form we'd have one of top 10 midfielders in Europe. This'd be a very exciting transfer.

Does he look sluggish now? Has he lost mobility? If he hasn't then he has a good chance of reaching those levels. As you say, at 15 million, we would have potentially one of europes most talented midfielders. Question is if he can get there again, why would Dortmund let him go for 15?

Contract runs out in 18 months.

From what I've seen he doesn't look like he has the same levels of energy but that's understandable. Agreed about the latter point, it's very rare that a club let post-injury player go for a fee smaller than they would have got prior to injury and he goes on to excel for the new club.

I do not really agree with the comments saying he is still far away from his best. When I saw him he was always one of the best Dortmund Players (together with Reus most of the time).
Maybe he is still missing 5 % but he is back among the very best CMs. I am wondering that e.g. Barca are not looking into that direction as they are searching a replacement for Xavi.

Yep, and he had previously expressed his desire to play abroad, so Dortmund isn't exactly holding the best cards in hand.
There's very little they can do in that case, even if he's regaining his top form.

Barcelona cannot buy players until 2016.

That explains it. Will be 12 months in July?

Yup! Puts us in a good position. I believe Barca would probably have been his first choice but since they can't sign for a while, Dortmund would most likely prefer to sell now as opposed to let him leave on a free.

He's perfect for Arsenal.....

What behaviour?

Coming out in his post match interview in which he himself had a poor game and suggesting he is considering leaving......from a captain that just about sums up his leadership qualities and lack of class.

Ahhh, pretty daft, alright.

Vidic did something similar to us. Hummels I think is overrated. I know we need to replace Evans and if Van Gaal thinks he's the man then fine. I just watched Varane last night and I wonder if 35m would also entice Real to sell.

Ever since this falcao fiasco I'm a little weary of players on the recovery trail, to be honest.

Hope our judgment proves better if we sign gundogan.

Its a flip of a coin. Nothing much a club can do apart from the usual fitness tests and background digging....

At 15 million it's probably worth it. Given his talent, the worst he's going to be is a good footballer.

Gundogan is 24 though. Plenty more time for him to recover.

No longer a target apparently... So says Rapha. To be honest I was hoping we were after better targets. (I.e. Guys on form).

Form doesn't bother me too much to be honest when it comes to transfers. Theres such a myriad of reasons why a player can be off form and why a player is on form. Gundogan doesn't seem to have lost that dreaded yard of pace and his injury is a little different to your standard ACLs and dodgy hamstrings. I'd be disappointed if we weren't after him for that price.

Varane is the best young CB I've seen in years. Madrid would be mad to sell for 50m.

This. I'm sick of players who are on their way back from a serious injury..

He came back from his serious injury 18 months ago, and didn't had any problem with his back since. Iirc when he came back he had the flu and fitness problems which were the reasons why he didn't played.

Well absolute worst case is that he has a big setback and has to retire, good footballer or not. But with so much potential £15m may be a gamble worth taking.

Is he playing back to his best though? That's the main question.. Considering his team has been shocking this season with him in it. We have to be honest if he's not the player he was 2 years ago we don't want him. Would be pretty much like what they've got signing Kagawa back.

No but, he is progressing every weeks, what I was saying is that you can use footballing arguments against him, but in term of health after 18 months he deserves the benefit of the doubts, imo.

Edit: He has at least the level of a very good squad players, and 15m is a good price for a squad player nowadays.

I love this type of player. Technically and Tactically brilliant. The fact is that in our midfield, he’s closer to Ander than Fellaini, and he fear that (like LVG said), he has to compete with Herrera, and that will be a pity to have Ander again on the bench, when he is developing into a top midfielder like that this season.

If we play with Carrick – Herrera – Gundogan next year, will it be a too identical midfield or not ?

Right now, with have 3 very different footballers in the midfield and this is what LVG loves (sitting mid, number 8 and playmaker). I really see Ander and Ilkay as both numbers 8…

Yes, Herrera can play 10, but in the PL, I would rather have this Fellaini next year. The PL is not always about technics and movement. That’s why Fellaini will still have a big impact on the team next year, more in PL than in CL where we can play with Gundogan and Herrera…

We aren't going to get a more LvG suited player, certainly not at the price, plus the beauty is he can start as a #8 but move into Carrick's role when he retires.
