İlkay Gündoğan

I don't understand the negativity on here. Gündogan is a young player who is intelligent and reads the game well. One back injury (which was pretty serious, granted) does not make him injury prone. He does not have dodgy knees or hamstrings. Apart from the year out due to his back, he's played pretty consistently across his career. Another point, people seem to think that he cannot adapt into the Carrick role. Maybe he cannot. Or maybe he can. Let's wait and see. Remember that Van Gaal was the man that transformed Schweisteiger from a bombing winger into one of the best complete CMs of today. Gündogan has all the attributes of being a really successful signing for us. Let Van Gaal get his hands on him for an entire pre-season and then we'll see. If he turns out to be made of glass, or shite, we move on. £21.5 million is not too much money for United, and at worst, we can sell him on for a £5-10m loss.

For now, I'm grinning from ear to ear.

When I left this last night it was 11 page or so now its 25.
Gundogan is class player, two footed, great control.
He might not be Carrick replacement, instead he would be played along Carrick and Herrera in 3 man MF this season.
May be next season we might be after Strootman as Carrick replacement. My only worry is injury issues, apart form its nothing.Never concerned about the money we are spending on him. He's just 24,if everything goes right we are set for long term considering we sign Strootman next season.

If Sebastian Weßling (Great journalist for Dortmund news) says so then i believe him and i would be totally happy if Gündogan would be a Manchester United player for the next years :)
But i wait with my happiness until he's made the medical and he walks in our shirt around Old Trafford.
£22m is a little bit too much for his situation (Contract and his performances this season) but £3-4m more shouldn't let to collapse this transfer.

Hopefully Sila likes Manchester

Any quotes from any Dortmund forums?
- 90% are happy that he goes for that possible price.
- They had always the feeling that Dortmund was just a stepping stone to a bigger club for Gündogan therefore they don't really care about him.
- They don't think he's the right player for Premier League football.
€30M is a lot of money for Gundogan. If he returns to form it´s a good deal for United. United overpaid around €5-10M. Nevertheless when you think he´s THE guy and you got the money, you don´t mess around.

Dortmund cannot pass up that fee, when the expected transfer fee, due to the length of his contract and injury concerns, was more like €15-20M. I guess Dortmund will invest the money in German U21 Geis and Sami Khedira. Tuchel has strong ties to both. Add in Sahin and Bender and their defensive midfield looks complete.

Deal makes a lot of sense for both clubs.

Also think that means Hummels stays at Dortmund.
If Hummels wants to leave and any club will bid £30m then i doubt he'll be a Dortmund player next season.

@Sean_RedDevil

Why don't they think he is the right player for the premier league? What do they have to say about this performances this season?
He would be more suited to the La Liga. Premier League football will be too physical and fast for him.

He was with his head and heart not really to 100% on the pitch in the last months (because it was clear that he wouldn't sign a new deal). He has made 2-3 great passes during a game but he is no leader in midfield, his defensive work (Positioning and no fighting) was average and he can't keep the ball.

And few are saying too that he shouldn't play for Dortmund anymore this season unless the transfer is 100% completed.

A Dortmund fan is also not so impressed with our forum

Not sure if he would actually survive past his first bad tackle from an overeager opponent in preseason to actually play during the season.

What is it with this injury prone stuff? He had stress on his spine which he had surgery on and the stress has now gone?! It's not like he was doing a Hargreaves

I doubt we buy Schneiderlin if Gundogan is coming. We still have the likes of Fellaini, Blind, and Herrera in the mix, so I doubt we would get a 2nd midfielder until Carrick moves on.

If I had to pick one it would be Schneiderlin, only because of Gundogan's recent injury problems. Back problems are notorious for recurring but maybe it won't be so bad.

of injury prone players. Look at the top teams, Barca, Real and Bayern. One major reason why they're the three best teams in the world right now is that they can rely on their players. They can plan the future around their players. SAF admitted that he could never plan the future around Louis Saha. .

The same Barca who bought an injury prone defender who I believe is still yet to play for them?

I've not seen a lot of him but from what I did see, he's not been the same player and anyone expecting the 2013 version will be sorely disappointed.

Over £21 million with a year on his contract? Christ. We seem particularly bad at sorting out fees in that situation. Same as Ashley Young

He's still a fairly good player but certainly hasnt done what he used to do at his best. He's barely made a tackle this season, still a good passer and dribbler but thats your lot.

Such an intelligent player with great technique having him Herrera Mata and Carrick in the same team will be ultimate keep ball. I am a but surprised to see us go for him as I thought Strootman would be more suited to us and I can't see LVG risking buying two midfielders who have had long term lay offs. With Strootman you also get the added physicality that our team needs. But if fit this boy Gundogan can be a great player for us.

Could be we want to stay on good terms for Hummels as well, paying a few mil above normal price seems the way to do it.

He definitely looks a bit rusty and like he's carrying a few extra pounds. I'd like to know whether that's just natural from coming back from a long lay off or whether he's still on a reduced intensity transiting program.

Ideally you'd want him to spend the summer working on conditioning and getting back to the level he was at, if that's a problem due to caution over his back then maybe he isn't the one we should go for.

A bit concerning that all the talk of his performances this season seems to be negative.

Only compared to his former level.

He's a fine CM still, its just we have plenty of those in Blind, Fellaini, Ander. He's slightly different to them, is he better? Not this season

However, he's the most resilliant/strongest on the ball after Fellaini, whilst being a technical passing player. So there are reasons why he'd be a good addition

This deal seem to have Hargreaves written all over it.

Oh well we have to replace the likes of Ando and Rafael with someone.

I was a big of his talents pre-injury. For me, he had the absolute lot, tenacious, intelligent, brilliant technical ability, great passing range and a good engine.

It all depends one what he's lost I guess. If he's lost some things that can regain and it's a question of putting in hours and getting rhythm back, then it would be a great signing. If the injury has made him a different player then that would be an issue.

I'd say he's worth the gamble. I wouldn't compare him with Anderson or Rafael, when he has been pretty much fit since he's come back from his injury. Anderson is a fat slob, who could not be trusted. And Rafael is made from glass.

Irrespective on whether he signs for us or not I wish him all the luck. I've seen too many players whose career was ruined by injury. For those who do not know, one of the brightest talent of the class of 92 is among them not to forget people like Van Basten whom I greatly admired as a kid.

Nevertheless United is not the right place for him. We have a poor record in terms of handling these sort of players. Also the EPL is played at high tempo and there's too many games in it. I am pretty pessimistic about these deal. This is one of those comments whom I wish I am wrong on though.

30 million is a fair whack for someone coming off of a serious injury and who would be a free transfer next year.

All transfers are a gamble though.

Where are you getting £30m from?

Can't quite understand those who think he's now effectively reduced in quality from what he was previously. He's played, what, 20 games since being out for over a year!

I'm not saying that he will definitely reach those levels again but I'd be amazed if any player in the World could recapture that form after a handful of games.

The "last year on the contract" thing means absolutely nothing to us. Based purely on his ability and the risk associated to him finding his previous form, £20m is an absolute bargain in today's market.

Even if he doesn't get back to his best, it would still be a great signing for the squad. We had one injury in midfield last week and had to play Rooney there. Hopefully he can get back to his best and we have a brilliant player on our hands but even if he doesn't, its still an a great addition.

Yes but we're almost guaranteed to sign a midfielder this summer, so thats always going to change whether its Gundogan or not. LVG said the midfield lacks balance and wants a new player so that'll obviously rectify the problem of numbers since Fletcher left
