I think most of his games will come in Herrera/Fellaini's position, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him play as an anchor at some point next season at all.
If he has fitness issues and needs Sahin to do the defensive work for him at Dortmund...why would United play him as the defensive part of midfield?

@Kill 'em all He's not fat...he's just cultivating mass obviously.

Where has all of this popped up from? I'm a little sceptical tbh.

Surely his fitness issues would mean that an anchor role would suit him more than playing box-to-box?

Should I find this photo scary or funny? It's on RAWK.
Well, he has Turkish roots and döners are hard to resist..

Important to note that the photo was taken when he was still injured.

From what I've read is that he struggles to close down players in defence now as he lacks his old dynamism. His form also improved a lot when Sahin started playing a deeper role and covering his defensive limitations. So basically his weakness is his defensive contribution right now so it pretty much rules out playing DM for United.

Well Carrick's role usually isn't to press from the back, it's to start attacks and make sure his positioning is spot on when the opposition has the ball. I pretty sure Gundogan would be absolutely fine doing a similar job.

Considering we have a Dortmund supporter on this site who watches Gundogan every week and says he doesn't have the attributes to play that position...I find this baffling! I'll just assume you watch him quite a lot because I haven't seen him enough to say.

A bit skeptical about this transfer in isolation. Certainly a risk given his injury record, but the potential downside isn't too big given the price, I suppose.

Pleased that we seem to be moving forward with our transfer business in a timely manner this year though. Get as many newcomers in before pre-season, and I'm absolutely certain we'll benefit immensely.

It won't matter as the best players will wind up playing. We bought Di Maria last summer, widely considered a world class player, and he's been on the bench. If Herrera is indispensable, Gundogan (if we buy him) could well also be a squad player.
True. I think that we need someone like Gündogan more than another winger like Depay, we have no other No 8 in our squad than Herrera.

I'm still not sure who to believe, the German source seemed to be reliable and pretty sure about it, but ESPN are now saying we aren't closing in on him.

ESPN are often pro-Liverpool, IMO.

I've decided to believe the German sources and Sky Sports and I'm now going to bed as an optimistic and happy muppet.

That ESPN Delaney guy seems to always get United stuff wrong from what I've seen.

"Club sources" told him we are after Vlaar

Strootman in Jan

De Gea

He just seems like he's just guessing stuff to be honest.

I'm not getting confident until Hönigstein or/and Fjørtoft say that IG is on his way to United. They always refuse to believe that any player will leave Germany. Especially to United.

Hopefully, the "form is temporarily, class is perminant" aphorism holds true to Gundogan if he comes here.

I do not see how Van gaal perspective of playing him as a number 6 will bring back his form pre his injury. Gundogan is at his best when giving a free box to box role akin to the way Barcelona plays Ineista. He is no where close to being an ideal replacement(in term of positional play) for Carrick in reality. Maybe in Fifa or football manager though he would make a great number 6.

Van Gaal might have to relive his bad tenure here at United, if he believes Gundogan is a number 6 and he hypothetically chooses to shoehorn him into our starting eleven.

Take price and fitness out of it, just looking at the player, with the added European games, it would be a great addition and really give us some quality in depth in midfield.

Well this kind of died off.
Well, the next step is the official announcement. Nothing to report anymore. Sky sports news on TV just keep repeating that Sky sources say Gundogan is close to agreeing a deal. I'm more worried about Depay.

The article on Sky Sports new Germany says he will this weekend. Totally ignored that part.

That's the reason why I'm not particularly excited, we will know soon enough if the reports are true.

Just got back online after a few days away. Few pages to catch up on over the next few hours!

Update: Giggs is in goals, and De Gea's our new manager.

Someone explain to this passionate if a tad tactically inept man why Gundogan is being signed when we have Herrera? Same position/skill set only Ander is, on this season's evidence, actually better.
