Álvaro Morata | Performances

40 goals in a season, up there with Lewandowski by the end of this season. Yeah right

He has a better goals to minute in the league than Lukaku.

Morata had a better goals to minute ratio in the La Liga than Ronaldo and Suarez last year, doesn't mean he's better than them. It's a rather pointless stat but then again I don't expect different considering how much you hyped him last year.

No one ever claimed he was Ronald or Messi. I suspect his problem at the moment is more mental because the football talent is definitely there. If he gets paired with a new coach who can resolve this then he will fare significantly better.

People say his shit, yet he scores reguarly. Dont know why people write him off. Great back-up option to have.

Yes, he know how to find the back of the net when he comes on.
Last season he scored 12 in 1198 minutes for 1 every 99.8 minutes.
This season he's now on 6 in 608 for 1 every 101.3.

For every minute he spends on the pitch these days he's as likely to score as the best of them. He's helped by the fact that a higher proportion of goals are scored late on in games and that's when he's getting most of his minutes. Although he's arguably hindered by coming in cold and needing to quickly get into the rhythm of the game. Bottom line is that Giroud's a threat when he's on the pitch.

This was about 10 weeks ago now, and things have changed a bit but it does give some context with Giroud:

Can't be arsed seeing exactly where the others are now.

Can imagine Giroud will be kept as back up next season, whilst Chelsea try and get in a top class striker. Morata just doesn't seem up for the league.

He doesn't score goals. Quite literally the worst kind of striker.

Giroud is comfortably the better striker.

Poor signing. So glad we swerved this one, I always had a funny feeling about Morata's ability to be the 'main man' for a big team.

Giroud is better than him, in my opinion - he's at least much better suited to the Premier League. I can see Morata leaving in the summer, back to Spain or maybe back to Italy.

Sometimes you see a player who just does not want to be where he is. Reminds me of when we had Di Maria. Added to that, he's absolutely crap, I can't see him being at Chelsea next season. Terrible signing for them, and he will be flogged to Italy in the summer.

I’ll gladly being him back to Juve to take Mandzukic’s role (back up striker and support striker/left forward), but absolutely not as the main man.

He has a better goals to minute in the league than Lukaku.
Stats per minute can be both good and bad. Some cases, they dont play often but get a few stat padding boosts in limited positions so its skewed. Sometimes they are injured often but class when they do play so stats per minutes are useful.
In moratas case, he had a decent start to the season and been pretty shit since.

Chelsea having poor season doesnt help, also its his first season in PL, a bit of time for adaptation should be taken in consideration. Never had opinion about him, good or bad but people taking his current state to shit all over him is just laughable. Next season Chelsea might be in better form and who knows, maybe he will look better too.

Agreed. He had a pretty good start and collapsed about half way through.

He is becoming in a serious candidate to watch the world cup from the sofa.
I never would have imagined it a year ago

He's a very talented player but seems to be thin skinned. Chelsea being appalling and this being his first season in the league doesn't help.

He needs to come to terms with the league mentally and toughen up. Think he'll be fine next season. He'd be much more suited to italy or Spain though.

Considering his injuries and games he's missed, he hasn't done bad. 11 goals and 6 assists for his first time in England and adapting to being the main man in a team. He mentioned recently he was playing through a back injury because he didn't want to let anybody down. I do think we need to give him another season as don't think there are that much better strikers out there who are available.

Where is the lady on radio 5 live who said Morata was better than Lukaku because of his intelligence and she'd rather have someone clever in the team instead of Lukaku? Wonder what she's saying now.

Of course no one did because they are on a different stratosphere to likes of Neymar and Suarez never mind Morata.

Also, I don't think many people on here questioned his ability. In fact they overrated it considering he combined his link up with an incredible goals per minute ratio last year (which heavily skewed many perceptions on here) His problem has always been mental. He's played for 2 of the biggest club in world football and failed to displace likes of Mandzukic, Llorente and a past it Benzema who were his competition. You need more than talent to succeed as a main goalscorer at a top club. If Chelsea had Salah on other wing doing bulk of scoring he'd look like a million bucks but when the expectations are on him to do the same he crumbles. It's happened thrice at three mega clubs so it's not a co-incidence.

Unless you can say he was desperate to join us, he is no Di Maria in that he desired the transfer to play as main striker for a top team. He got his wish send played for a club in London, was PL reigning champions, and for a coach who he has incomplete business with due to Conte left right when Morata joined Juventus.

Just turned out not be able to fully adapt to PL, and Chelsea having their own problem.

I wasn't disappointed but was indifferent when we signed Lukaku in the summer. Neither of Morata or Lukaku is good enough for a top club who wants to win everything.

Good thing he went off, he has to preserve that goals to minutes ratio.
