Nearly half the Bale fee, but at the price of a better player... Great business for Arsenal and Spurs, very poor business from Madrid.

What does this post even mean ? Madrid basically got Bale for 40 odd million and offloaded a player who was going to be surplus to requirements following Bale's arrival. Their paying a ridiculous fee for Bale doesn't seem so ridiculous any more. Dropping Kaka probably didn't hurt their wage output either.

RM bought Bale for £80M and sold the better player for £40M. I'd have thought even a dimwit would get it.

They basically paid 40 million and Ozil for Bale? The point is that Ozil should never be surplus to requirements at any club. He's a world class player who had the most assists in the world these last few years. He's arguably the best attacking midfielder in the world and is only 1 year older then Bale. Most people would agree he's also the better player, and he has definitely showed that these last few years. Bale is a world class player, but he is not on Ozil's level, and he will not compliment Ronaldo as well as Ozil did.

We've been playing with Ramsey and tried to sign Bender (both 'proper CMs' who can pass as well as run and defend).

Forgot about you guys trying to sign Bender. He would have been a very good signing for you guys. Did he just not want to leave?

That's drivel. What do they need then?

People seem to have this idea that Arsenal need an angry midfielder or a tall CB and suddenly they'll challenge for the title again. It's bollocks. They need top class players all over the pitch, the kind they a. haven't been able to keep or b. haven't been able to attract ever since dodgy Roman arrived and started inflating transfer fees and wages across the board.

The dodgy money rolled into the league just when Arsenal were building their stadium. Unfortunate and thats what has set them back, but Arsenal fans should realise Wenger's intentions and the brilliant foundation that the club is in going forward because of him.

Brilliant coach and principled philospher on football, to this day. He's a credit to the English game.
Brought a tear to my eye.

Madrid aren't interested in any of that though, it's all about star factor.

Ozil was never going to be marketable for them.

Giroud
Cazorla Ozil Walcott
Wilshere Arteta

You can't tell me that you don't need a proper defensive midfielder in there? Someone like Song (who you had obviously) or Gustavo would have been perfect there IMO. Wilshere and Arteta are both good passers of the ball, but are too lightweight to be proper defensive midfielders. Every team needs someone who isn't afraid to get stuck in for their midfield. Bayern have Martinez, Dortmund have Bender, Madrid have Khedira, Barca have Busquets (different type of player but point still stands). You lot also need one who will help shield the defence.
Song didn't really do that. Flamini can tackle and pass and be a prick if we need to crack some skulls.

agreed. To be fair to most Arse fans, they have put up with the situation though this seasons moans were abit OTT. Still alls well that ends well. Very happy for Wenger especially. Hope he makes a good challenge this year

I think he knows he needs to get out of Real and they were just the best option

Yes but still, with the Bale deal all but certain for a week or so you'd have thought City, Chelsea, PSG, Monaco, ourselves, German clubs and Italian clubs would have given him another option with far more likelyhood for trophies. But nope

Thing with Busquets and Martinez is they are both exceptional passers of the ball. You don't need holding midfielders. Is Carrick a holding midfielder anymore than any of Arsenal's midfielders are?
If you watched Arsenal v Spurs you'd have seen shit DMs in action - Spurs had two big units in Capoue and Paulinho who had no idea what to do with the fecking ball. Lose.

I think when talking of "holding midfielders" people generally talk about defensive midfielders but these don't have to be brainless destroyers but can be intelligent player like Schweinsteiger or Pirlo as well. It's not without reason that people say the roles have shifted and these days the 8 has taken over the job of the 6 in defensive midfield while still offering intelligent passing and something going forward or to say it in FM terms the Anchor man has become a Deep-Lying Playmaker.

So in a sense you don't need the defensive destroyer anymore but you still need a player doing the job in front of the defense even though it's generally a more intelligent type of player these days, which is not to say there never were these type of players around before recent years.

The term defensive mid now is overused. All a team needs is a player who's willing to sit deep, an excellent passer and has the discipline to keep the shape of the midfield. Arteta does a good job for them in that role and with the return of Flamini, I think they're covered in that deep/DM position.

Completely disagree. No top team has this - anyone fulfilling the defensive role needs to put a shift in and try to win the ball, not just be in position when the opponent attakcs.

Its just that this alone isnt good enough anymore. You need to be able to use the ball well also as more teams will try to press now, pressuring a player with limited passing and ability to wriggle free

 you're just making our point. Pirlo and Sweini are 'proper midfielders' ie they can do a bit of everything the modern 'DM' is a de Jong, Barry, Capoue - run all day do feck all creatively.

Eh? I'm talking relatively. In terms of our squad the manager picks the brainless one ahead of the one who actually attempts to pass the ball. Referencing the lack of need for a defensive midfielder at all levels.

Well Tiote does pass the ball. Not very inventively but numbers wise he's got on the ball and passed it more than any of your other players this season. In previous seasons he was second to Cabaye. He's not going to get forward after laying it off though, no

Well yeah that's the major the problem. He gets all our possession. Not sure on the figures but I wouldn't be surprised if he had more possession of the ball than Cabaye last year. And he's rubbish with it, but he gets given it all the time. No wonder we can't score for shit and nearly got relegated.

Yeah, teams will be very happy for him to have the ball instead of Cabaye

Yeah I was not trying to argue against the point that the "traditional" holding midfielder isn't needed anymore I just thought it was a misunderstanding considering the term "holding midfielder" but not trying to argue the fact that the Barrys of this world are out of fashion in today's game, well at least at the top clubs.

Oh and congratulations on getting the better deadline deal I'm really interested how Özil will do in the PL and I feel it can only help his development if he has to play in a more physical league then the Spanish league so it's probably a good thing for our national team that he went to a PL club.

Winning the ball is the role of the entire midfield, not just the player sitting deepest. A lot of times the other midfielders look for the holding mid as a pivot to ensure that the shape is kept during defensive work and also when starting an attack. It always seems like they are the ball winners when the truth is that a midfield that's well drilled and pressing the ball will allow the holding mid to be the extra man in the back 4.

Tiote got to be a fan favourite like Dench by knocking a few players over - doesn't cut it if you can't pass.

Then if Tiote was out it was fecking Perch in instead getting the ball all the time.

Specialist holding midfielders and Championship fullbacks being played as the major dictator of possession in the midfield of a flat a 4-4-2 system. fecking eye-wateringly bad.

Anyway, feck holding midfielders.

I couldn't believe how bad you were at City, you've got more talent than that.

Good signing for Arsenal, the bastards, but I'm not sure the money couldn't have been spent better elsewhere. Ozil is fantastic, but they have enough twinkle toed attacking midfielders. I don't see what he brings that Cazorla already doesn't. The £40mil going on a striker and a centre half would've suited them better.

Fantastic player though. So fair play.

Also, feck you, Storey.

They're Real Madrid. Exactly what someone expects. In three years they'll sell Bale and sign another shiny toy which isn't necessarily better than him.

This. It's a complete myth that the role involves someone who needs to get 'stuck in' or a consistent ball winner. A holding mid needs to be an excellent passer of the ball and also needs to keep it while under a bit of pressure before completing the pass. Busquets isn't a tackler, but his passing abilities are nothing short of impeccable. He provides the pivot for Xavi and the others in front of him.

Wenger will get at least 20% more out of him (see Cazorla et al) - that should make him pretty awesome.

1 Ozil is better than 0 Ozil. Wenger is a good manager and would know how to use him.

Busquets is technically miles ahead of most PL CMs before you get into his positioning, discipline, gamehead etc.

Watched it in a pub in Nice paying 8 euros a pint. Woeful. No good having half decent players if they're woefully coached and organised.
 couldn't even afford to get pissed which was probalbly the only way to swallow it. No 'desire' as George used to say.
