He is 21 and is playing in a dysfunctional team. He's been judged harshly and quickly, but I guess that's what it comes to when you play for Manchester United, but I'm willing to give him a couple of seasons to see how he does before making judgement. So far he hasn't exactly lit the world on fire but I never really expected that to begin with.

How is he supposed to develop in this catastrophic mess we're going through both on and off the field. It's like asking a swimmer to develop in a pool filled with sludge.
I guess someone forgot to tell the likes of Mainoo and Garnacho that they shouldn't be developing in this catastrophic mess.

I think Martinez was a good signing, but after that...
I agree with you in part, but Licha's inability to stay fit is a concern. And despite his strength with the ball at his feet and his overall tenacity he is an easy target on crosses. But let's stipulate that Martinez is the one and only one intelligent signing by ETH.

Yes, because every player is the same and plus Garnacho and Mainoo have also fallen off a cliff these past few games.

Well both of them also declined over the course of the season, so you proved his point.

It's mind boggling how so many people here don't have any patience for youth anymore.

You and me both mate. Not sure what else people expected at from a striker his age. I can only assume it's the transfer fee and lack of alternative options that has some posters so set on not wanting to be patient with him.

Yup. Not much use of his intelligence, if he's about to wreck himself physically. Mata was intelligent too, in Chelsea. Blind & Eriksen were definitely wise ones, before health complications.

With Hojlund at least you're getting some chance of longevity, which is foreign concept in this team.

For every one of these sensible posts…

you get three of these:

He has shown his all round ability in many games up until his injury and before coming here. The only aspect of the game he’s not at least good at is heading. His hold up play is fine (he actually lays the ball off nicely quite often, to claim otherwise you must be suffering from severe confirmation bias), he can dribble and turn on his man (though it’s hard when you’re mostly totally alone with two CBs), his positioning is good (though he hasn’t been able to really show it lately because the team is in shambles and the players play for themselves mostly), his technique is fine, his pace, drive and finishing all excellent. And maybe most importantly: His mentality is very strong. He seems a very positive guy, and even though his confidence must’ve taken a hit like the rest of the team, he still tries and gives everything. All signs are there that he’ll thrive and quickly in a well organized team playing to his strengths.

Even if he hadn’t shown much at all I’d still not judge him or the other young players. How the hell can anyone expect them to not only carry themselves, but the whole team in this situation?
He is not at the right level to be a starter for us, the likes of Jackson have been criticised but he appears to be a better player at the moment for half the price.

I have nothing against the kid but it is an unfair pressure for his ability. If we think he is good enough for us at the moment then we need to manage our expectations as a club because he is not good enough as a starter for a team looking for a consistent place in top 4
It is ok to have a different opinion but calling our posts not sensible is ridiculous when all evidence point to the contrary

The problem is his supporters trying to deny the fact that he is not good enough to be a starter for us at the moment.
Taking account his age and talent, he has done alright but so has McTominay and he is not good enough.
I think we need better as a starter and give the kid the time to learn his trade, the issue is when people expect him to be as good enough as a starter should be for us.
He is just not good enough to be a starter for us if top 4 is the aim and that is a sensible opinion to hold

After being linked to football geniuses like Arnautović or Choupo, Hojlund supporters could make some point... and I'd love a sharp striker added to the squad, with actual best years ahead.

Talking about evidence you provide zero. The only thing you say is that he isn’t good enough. That’s what’s not sensible, to not provide arguments when others have given you loads of evidence for the opposite opinion - both about him as a player and the circumstances you do need to consider. And btw, it’s not a discussion about him starting or not - of course we ought to have another cf as well to take some pressure off him. It’s about whether or not you can call him “not good enough” based on his performances so far as a young player in a new league and in a dysfunctional team. And whether or not he has potential, which I think is glaringly obvious.

Jackson - come on, no one knows how he’d do in our team in this situation, but most likely not an inch better than Hojlund. I honestly can’t name more than a handful of center forwards in the world who’d be able to drag this team anywhere on their own as it seems we’re asking Hojlund to do atm.

What I’m most impressed about is how Hojlund has actually managed to keep up a good spirit while still fighting hard for scraps. Even if he hasn’t played great since the injury he still leaves everything on the pitch. That shows strong mentality. I’m convinced that he, Garnacho and Mainoo will drag us out of this mess in the coming years provided the club gets a strong setup and capable manager.

A lot of rubbish in this post, evidence? You can see evidence everywhere.
He continues to lose his battles and lose the ball easily. Please give me a break.
Kid has not done anything in his career before coming here and has largely been bad this season.
He is not alone in this squad but at individual level, he is not ready to lead the line if mediocrity is not part of it

Not sure that is supporting the point you wanted to make. By any objective measure Mainoo and Garnacho have declined sharply over the last couple of months after some excellent earlier form.
Garnacho probably fair, Mainoo I think thats a bit strong.

I just don't think the dysfunctional team is a great excuse when we have other younger players who have perhaps performed better.

I think the guy has a lot of potential, but I find him lacking in some areas. In the same token I think you can see some improvements he has made through the season. His last goal, 6yrd box back post (think it was his last goal) I though was an improvement on his movement for example.

I don't think he is ready to be our lead striker. In an ideal world we brought him last season and he would have been loaned out for a season or two. But thats not his fault.

We will probably know where we are with him this time next year, which would be a more fairer time to judge all round.

Don't know why we bought Hojlund, or Mount, or replacing De Gea with Onana, or loan Amrabat. This is a season that we all wish to end asap, get Ten Hag fired asap, and rebuild the team for next season.

Well, they have all clearly struggled in some games, haven’t they? Also, it’s not like the older guys are performing better - on the contrary, actually. Of course it’s fair to point out that the team is dysfunctional and take it into account when considering if a player has done well or not.

Hojlunds position is the hardest to excel in and usually promising center forwards like him doesn’t become good enough for a top league until they are older - he’s already there, though he’ll still improve and would have benefited from having an experienced attacker to learn from of course.

I don’t think his movement has improved, he’s made so many of those runs without getting played the whole season. To me it seems that he’s now expecting to run in vain and hesitates more, which is a shame.

Yeah, don’t think you know what evidence means then. You just repeat your opinion, which is fine, but it’s not evidence.

As for not doing anything before - he was catapulted from Denmark through Austria to Italy in a year and played well in Atalanta. I don’t suppose you watched him there but I did, and his talent was obvious as the interest from many big clubs suggested.

Even if you do think he always loses the ball (not true), I find it strange that you totally disregard his obvious strengths - for example his very composed finishing when he does get a chance.

Signing Hojlund hasnt worked out for us, he isnt really good enough for a top Premier League club and we should probably sell him in the summer while he still has value.

I wonder how he would have gotten on playing for Chelsea this season. Jackson has been ridiculed at times for being wasteful but has had a much better season in the league stats wise.

Chelsea create loads but it often feels like we barely know how to play football.

He's put in perfectly acceptable performances given his age. We should have more than one CF in the squad.
Nah he's been quite anonymous almost all season, he often looks like he's about to fall over and his movement needs work. He also is no way near as good in the air as he should be. There is a lot he needs to improve on in his game, I'm struggling to see value of 30m let alone 50 or 70.

Not everything is a Ten Hag problem. Hojlund himself has failed in some key basics in the game, and that's got nothing to do with the system. He's not strong enough, he's not that good in the air (was the case in Atalanta too) and he allows the ball to get trapped under his feet a lot.

He can flick the ball on to players around him well enough, that's fine. But there's a lot generally missing from his game that he needs to work on, irrespective of the system.

He has from his early FCK days been excellent at running channels and dribling past players when receiving the ball while running.
He has always had weakness when having to be with the back against the defenders.
Him getting signed and then forced to play with his back against defenders and essentiially doing a Weghorst shows an incredible lack of understanding of the players strengths and weaknesses.
So yes this is on Ten Hag.

Forced to play with his back to defenders? Not being funny but all modern day forwards need to be comfortable with their backs to goal. Whether they are a false 9 in Havertz or a target man in Toney.

He is missing key aspects of his game and his movement isn't as good as it needs to be, and that's irrespective of the system. He's also very weak, that dive against Palace was pretty embarrassing to witness for example. He always looks like he's about to fall over or lose control over the ball when he's running with it - that's not a system problem.

Different strikers have different strengths. When you only play to a players weakness and never to his strengths he will not work out. Despite a terrible setup and wingers not passing and in the most of the early season Bruno not passing he was champions league top scorer when we went our and broke the record with 7 in 7.
He had weaknesses but he is very clinical when used correctly, this train wreck of a system sadly brings the worst out in most our players.
It's no coincidence that Kobbie has looked complete shit the last few games. Even he has regressed immensely under this manager.

Love how people are giving up on a 21 year old. We’ve seen what he’s capable of when he went on that goalscoring streak. His injury has set him back. He’ll become a lot better when the team does. Can’t expect a 21 year old to carry this awful team

He is a 21 year old young player and it is his first season in EPL, and he gets very little serve.

It was criminal to put him under the stress of being the only striker, and it is not ok that he is not supported by our wingers or our midfield. McT literally occupies Hojlund's position when he plays.

Considering everything, Hojlund is doing better than expected. Leave the kid alone and fix things around him!

He has had a chance though and has shown he isnt good enough for this level
He’s had 1 season with “attacking “ players like Antony and Rashford and to a certain extent a greedy Garnacho on top of a manager who has no style of play and has the team setup like a Sunday league team. Look at the bigger picture. I think he’ll come good
