If he took a heavy knock, well then fair enough. Why is he on the bench though in that case? also, until either Lingard justifies his start, or Jose gives a valid reason for leaving the best player on the pitch in our last match out, I think we are entitled to be shocked. We need to win this game the way results are currently going, and people want to see our best lineup out there.

I hope Lingard players well, on a side note.

Pretty simple, there are less options to replace them. Replacing Herrera or Pogba with Fellaini or Schneiderlin say, weakens the team a lot more than replacing Martial with Lingard.

Bit of a simplistic way of putting it. Pogba could be replaced by Mata and team wouldn't be weakened more than replacing Martial with Lingard.

Martial deserves to start today and he won't improve by sitting in the dugout. Hopefully Lingard plays well in his place.

If we sell Morgan, would we not need another central midfielder? Being in PL, FA, EL and LC will otherwise, as Martin Edwards would have said, kill the players.

You make a fair point, but Mata for Pogba changes the shape of the team more than Lingard for Martial. By the way, I don't necessarily agree with the change, I'm just putting forward the most logical and reasonable explanation I can think of.

Of course I have. I don't think players that play brilliantly should be dropped. I hated it under Ferguson, I hated it under Moyes and Van Gaal and I feel the same way about it under Mourinho.

It works both ways. I'm not the biggest fan of Rojo and Jones but they sure as hell deserve to be starting games at the moment. I'd feel the same if they were dropped the game after putting in a performance.

Martial said in an interview recently that one of his problems this season has been lack of stamina. This is why his performances have been so stop start. An why its not a surprise that he's rested so soon after such an energetiv performance. I think LVG overused him last season and then he had a long euros too which was too much for a very young player after all. He did say though that he's been working on stamina and its getting better, as last match showed.

Martial was extraordinary last game, but I would think that Rashford would be more ideal up front than Lingard, Mata perhaps too.
