Tut tut, it's "the Boleyn Ground". Quite when or why it became that nobody seems to know.
When I first heard the Boleyn Ground i started to ask myself "didn't West Ham played on the stadium with other name just one season ago?". Why they stopped caling it Upton Park anyway? I never heard it is called Boleyn Ground before this season.

We shouldn't focus too much on Carroll, that would be a mistake. We need to focus on our own game and if we get that right Carroll won't be a factor.
This. I think that thread about how to deal with Carroll was way over the top. It is not the first time we are playing a team who has a player of height.

Yep it's odd. I'm 52yo and it has always been Upton Park until this season  Any Hammers fans on here to clear this up?

Hope the squad properly understand the history and cultural significance of West Hams supporters at the Boleyn Ground.

Their most passionate fans including old timers from the ICF will be in attendance for the last ever game at this stadium and emotions will be very high. There might even be an old fashioned fisticuffs, for old times sake, in the back streets after the game!

With Europa Cup qualification still possible for West Ham, I'm sure we'll face a very hostile crowd and a very motivated team who might just sweep us away before we can even get into the game. So do we try and soak up and nullify the early pressure or come out sprinting and impose ourselves before they do?

Given that we also drastically need the points and that a draw is useless for both teams, it could well be an epic game.
    Good post

For those interested, I think the official name of the stadium has always been Boleyn Ground but is now more commonly known as Upton Park because of where it's situated.

Presumably West Ham's fans and the club wanted to bring that name back for the last season because of tradition or whatever.

Don't know why there's so much negativity here, our last performance at the "Bowl in Ground" was great and one of the rare highlights of this season for me. If we can match it we should get 3 points.

Norwich were the ones I was more worried about, a bunch of park the bus cloggers who had no intention to win. We'll get a lot more space tonight.

We had most/all our chances from the left flank IIRC, with Martial being the main creator (he's out for this fixture). Moreover Fellaini being absent is a big blow, he is very good at defending headers in the box (not really much elsewhere though).

If you add to that the players being fired up that bit more by the fans given its the last game at the stadium, you'l probably see a different sort of game compared to last time.

Any other team news we're unaware of?

    • Fellaini suspended
    • Darmian injured
    • Schweinsteiger injured
    • Martial doubtful
Jones and Pereira have played pretty much 90 minutes in the final Under-21s game of the season, but I'd say they're unlikely to make the first team squad again this season. Shaw is very unlikely to play at all this season as well, if he does it would probably be a consolation substitute appearance against Bournemouth in stoppage time. Will Keane also out for the season probably, but that one doesn't matter so much.

    de Gea
    Valencia Smalling Blind Rojo
    Carrick
    Herrera Rooney
    Mata Rashford Lingard
    ---
Romero; Fosu-Mensah, Borthwick-Jackson; Schneiderlin, Young; Memphis, Januzaj

That's probably my expected line-up and squad from LvG. However, I think Rojo has been garbage the last few games, so I'd start Fosu-Mensah. I also think we could use Schneiderlin in midfield for a bit more security and help dealing with the aerial threat - so, it'd probably have to be Herrera left on the bench to come on and make a difference if needed. If Martial is 80%+ fit, put him on the bench over Januzaj, Memphis, or Young.

The team have 100% let us down every time we've been in with a chance this season (bar the FA Cup), so hopefully we can just string these last three wins together to achieve more than we all expected after a terrible Winter period.

I think we'll win this by a score of 0-1, 0-2, or 1-2, in a very, very difficult game. Going to have to miss the first half due to work :( but I might be able to just about catch all of the 2nd half.

Its been rare that I am excited about a football match these days but I am for this one. It would be wonderful to get the top 4 and specially to throw city out of it. Regardless of the result I am grateful that United have something to fight for right uptill the end of the season in the league.

West Ham fans prefer "Upton Park", they got too much stick from oppo fans for playing in a stadium named after a queen.
    "O-way, o-way, o-way, o-way.
    Get her, get her"

Yes. Fellaini is missing, through his own fault. It isn't poor old Fellaini, he has left us in this position.

Just how big is this game to United now?

I actually think this game is one of the most important games we've had in the last decade, no trophy is on the line but the repercussions of not qualifying will be massive. Top four and the FA Cup and we could be rolling again.

Most neutrals expect us to drop points. Hope we cause an upset.

In fairness, of all the possible away games that this important game could have fell on, West Ham would be in the top bracket of teams I wouldn't want to face.

    Huge game raisers.

The only thing that gives me a bit of hope is that, we've won quite a number of matches I 100% expected us to lose.

If Rojo does play, let's just say he steps up from that lazy defending we've been seeing as of late.

If they go into this game like norwich, it's going to be a bloodbath. Norwich were essentially playing like it was an end of season testimonial and it still took an error for MUFC to score. I'd drop rooney and lingard for this game and continue with herrera, bring in schneiderlin. Herrera's understanding with mata is much more vital than rooney pinging crosses around the park, and schneiderlin is much better protecting for the back 4, which i think would be a better option than lingard doing his disappearing act.

With herrera, he was the only MUFC player looking to move forward in the norwich game and it amazes me that LVG has not given herrera/schneiderlin/mata time to gel, but instead just picks fellaini.

Certainly, for what's at stake, the biggest game LVG is going to be in charge of so far at United. So come on LVG...all that arrogance, all that self belief, all that bravado....make it bloody work.
TBH this is perhaps is biggest game since he has been here along with Wolfsburg and possibly Liverpool in Euro Cup. How we approach this game will tell us a lot. We really have little to lose by going for the jugular.

Smalling and Blind has totally dominated Caroll earlier, so I have no worries about that one causing us too many problems. Hopefully Poyet will get an early yellow for all those dives against us this season and he'll stay quiet for the rest of the match.

I personally would not care about our performance at this stage. Just win it.

That's my take as well. A lot of people are obsessed about LVG out and actually wish that we lose. As true supporter we have to forget our differences and support the team to win, no matter how.

At this stage it's not about pretty football but the result. Remember when we beat Barca 1-0 at OT, they were all over us but we managed to smash and grab a great goal by Paul Scholes and the rest is history.

Come end of the season, People can shout LVG out as much as they want, but for now as supporters we must be the 12th man. Any win no matter how ugly is 3 points.

If Martial is fit, then we win. If he isn't, then i can't see us getting 3 points.

I also think Fellaini missing this one is a big loss for us (shock horror). He was a major factor why we managed to beat them in the FA cup

Then he shouldn't have stuck an elbow on Huth, then he would be available.

Did I miss the memo where everybody decided to stop calling it Upton Park and give it its older name The Boleyn ground, which no one referred to it by before this season.

I've been following football for 20 odd years and never heard of Boleyn ground.
I had to look up on Google what Boleyn was.

We've scored 10 goals in the last 11 away games. And most of them were with Martial.

But in fairness, scoring 1 goal per game is always our game plan and we are pretty good at it.
In our last game, Mata popped up with our 1 goal. Against WHU, another player will probably come up with our 1 goal.
I've predicted a loss for us...but a win or draw is equally possible. This is not a lost cause by any means, though I expect WHU to fight harder than Norwich who were so bad, I felt embarrassed for them.
