Give me a good ol' 442.

    Dave
    Tony - Chris - Marcos - Luke
    Ander - Daley - Angel - Ashley
    Wayne - Robin

I just realized how fruity our team sounds. We have attackers named Robin, Ashley, and Angel?

    ---------De Gea-----------
    Valencia Smalling Rojo Shaw
    ---------Blind-------------
    Fellaini---------Rooney
    ------- ADM------------
    --RvP--------Falcao----

Herrera booted on bench and wont come on... Mata sits on bench for 75 mins and cant do anything after coming on..

    Paper Review
First of all, if you've not seen yesterday's match yet and don't want to be spoiled with the result - why are you looking at this thread?! Anyway, don't look below if you haven't. If you want to view the game against Preston North End either for the first time or again, view Chris H's fantastic Manchester United videos thread here.

Below is a brief look at what the papers have said today after the result.
    1) Rooney rejuvenated, Di Maria a worry and more we learned from Man Utd's win over Preston (MEN)
    2) ‘Rooney is a CHEAT!’ Collymore slams Man United captain (talkSPORT)
    3) Preston boss Simon Grayson laments Manchester United's three 'contentious' goals (Daily Mirror)
    4) The whole is still weaker than the sum of its parts at United despite victory over Preston... (Sky Sports)

    Post Match Interviews

Here are the post match interviews for last night's game (all on YouTube):
    1) van Gaal post match

    2) Fellaini post match

    3) Sir Bobby Charlton
RvP will play. Fellaini will play. Rooney in midfield. Herrera to be dropped, i fear. Hope i'm wrong.

    ------------------ De Gea ----------------
    Valencia - Smalling ---- Rojo ---- Shaw
Di Maria -- Rooney ---- Blind ---- Young
    --------------------- Fellaini -------------
    ----------------- RvP ---------------------
    Sadly, this.

I would love to see young and mata come in for falcao and fellaini.
I know it will be unfair on Fellaini. But we can start with the following team:
    -----------------ddg--------------
    valencia---smalling--rojo--shaw
    --------herrera---blind-----------
    -di maria----mata--------young-
    -------------rooney---------------

If we are not leading and/or controlling the game, we can bring Fellaini on for Mata or Young.
I would absolutely love it if we get the line up above, but I know what we won't get that.

The really is no magic formula to transform our team. Lets just take it game by game and play the situation. Hopefully the Preston game will have encouraged Louis and we'll now see him more willing to change things during the game. That was the most frustrating with the West Ham game, his reluctance to change things.

Would like to see a 4-2-3-1, with almost the same team playing

    -------------------------------------De Gea------------------------------------
    Valencia------------------Smalling----------Rojo------------------------Shaw
    -----------------------------Herrera-----------Blind---------------------------
    Di Maria-----------------------------Rooney-----------------------------Young
    -------------------------------------Van Persie---------------------------------

    I guess it will be

    --------------------------------------De Gea------------------------------------
    Valencia------------------Smalling------------Rojo-----------------------Shaw
    ---------------------------------------Blind-------------------------------------
    -------------------------Rooney---------------Di Maria------------------------
    ---------------------------------------Mata------------------------------------

    Heart says:

    Valencia-Smalling-Rojo-Shaw

    --------Herrera-Blind---------

    --Fellaini----Mata---Di Maria-

    -------------Rooney-----------

    4-2-3-1
Play our in form players in correct positions. RVP can become an impact sub once defenses are tired and a fresh RVP for 30mins will be better than an RVP starting first 60mins when defenses are quick

Prediction: 1-4 (Rooney 2, Mata, Di Maria)

Gylfi will be back for this! Something tells me that he is going to score..

    --------------De Gea---------

    Valencia-Smalling-Rojo-Shaw

    ------- Herrera-----Blind----

    --Di Maria----Mata---Januzaj

    -------------Rooney----------

Would really like to see us put two good halves together, no I do not mean being perfect that is impossible, but just see us play with some urgency right from the start and right up until the end.

Squeaky bum time, so need to keep churning out points week after week.

Based on the last few away games, we will create very few chances.
Falcao will play and score 0 goals.
    RVP might get 1.
We normally draw when playing away, so I will go for 1-1.

My confidence when we're playing away from home is in the shits right now. I honestly reckon it'll be an other draw.

With Di Maria getting back in form, a fairly consistent back four, and with Young, Fellani and Herrera getting a chance to play, I think things couldn't be much better. The off form players will not be playing.

I would be at a loss if he introduced Wilson or Adnan at this stage as starters. It must not be lost on LVG that with only 13 games left and with 5 of the top 7 still to play, we need to make sure we win the other 8 games. Starting with Swansea. Win those and the goal of top 4 is realized.

I think Falcoa will play, for no other reason than assuming LVG will try to stick with the same starting eleven as often as possible in the final run up. I have gone for a 1-1 draw because we don't do well in a busy week, our brittle darlings will have stiff muscles after their brusing game against PNE. We will swap 3-4th places with three other clubs from now until the end of the season - time to dig in and grind out those results.

Liked seeing the 4-2-3-1 this week in the latter stages of the match. It's something I'd wanted us to try, and will be better when Carrick is back, but I'm saying we stick with it for this match.

    De Gea

    Valencia
    Smalling
    Rojo
    Shaw

    Blind
    Herrera

    DiMaria
    Fellaini
    Young

    Rooney

gives us options to change the team around if needed. Can also take out Fellaini and put RVP up top with rooney in behind him.

    What I want:

    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Blind
    Fellaini Herrera
    Di Maria Rooney Young
    What I think we'll get:

    De Gea
    Valencia Jones Rojo Shaw
    Blind
    Rooney Januzaj
    Di Maria
    Fellaini RVP

I think Mata may play this game. I feel confident in playing against a team that prefers to play on the grass. Means we can play less physical players and more finess style players and really have a game of "pretty football"

    __________ De Gea__________
    Valencia Smalling Rojo Shaw
    ____________Blind___________
    ______Herrera_______di Maria
    ____________Mata_________
    ____Rooney_______van Persie

I can see us playing something like this (maybe Januzaj over Mata) and attempt to dominate possession and nullify Swansea attack. If we still can't break through we just switch to winger in the final 30 mins and hit them with pace and directness with their legs probably tired by then.

1-3 to us Mata to score if he plays

It's away so we're going to struggle, but I do appreciate that Swansea actually try to play football. Not really sure if we'll keep the same formation as RvP is back... We'll probably play this.

    De Gea
    Valencia - Smalling - Rojo - Shaw
Di Maria - Rooney - Blind - Young
    RVP - Fellaini

    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Di Maria Blind Herrera
    Rooney RvP Young

    --------------De Gea----------

    Valencia-Smalling-Rojo-Shaw

    --------Herrera-Blind---------

    --Fellaini----Mata---Di Maria-

    -------------Rooney-----------

    4-2-3-1
Play our in form players in correct positions. RVP can become an impact sub once defenses are tired and a fresh RVP for 30mins will be better than an RVP starting first 60mins when defenses are quick

Prediction: 1-4 (Rooney 2, Mata, Di Maria)

    -Valencia---Smalling----Rojo---Shaw------
    ----------Fellaini----Blind----Herrera-----------
    ---------------Rooney---Di Maria-----------------
    ---------------------RVP---------------------------

Switch Rooney for RVP and Mata in Roo's position if RVP is not fit.

    4231/ 4411

    DDG
    McNair Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Di Maria Herrera Blind Young
    Rooney
    RVP

But looking at the game being a difficult away tie and the prospect of Jonjo Shelvey beasting on Blind/Herrera again, may lead to Van Gaal selecting Rooney beside Blind and Fellaini in the hole.

Massive game really. Really should win this given Swansea aren't in great form.

I hope LvG realises that we're better with Rooney further up the field and with some width in the team. I think Young and Herrera did enough to warrant starting places:

    de Gea
    Valencia Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Herrera Blind
    Di Maria Rooney Young
    van Persie

Although, I wouldn't mind seeing Mata/Januzaj play behind Rooney, or Wilson play in front of him depending on the fitness of RvP. I think 'playing football' is not going to be the best course of action against Swansea, as it'll just end up being a boring passing game in the middle of the park where we will struggle more than they do to create chances. We might as well use some width and counter attack.

That said, Swansea aren't great at the moment and lost their best forward last month, so we really should be winning this. It's time we put together some away wins rather than just managing draws. If we can do that in the next few games (Swansea A, Sunderland H, Newcastle A) and hopefully get through the FA Cup game against Arsenal, we'll have set ourselves up very, very nicely to pull away at last and solidify third. After this little run of games we should be winning, we get Spurs at Old Trafford and Liverpool away... If we could win those, then I don't see any of the chasing pack catching us and it'd be all about them fighting for one place with Arsenal and the rest.

Said 1-1 in the predictions because I think LvG will play a diamond again (which I wouldn't be totally against so long as Rooney is not in midfield), but I think we can edge this of course if the team selection is right and everyone's at it.

Today's game hopefully showed Van Gaal a few things:

    • Drop Falcao
    • Play Rooney up front
    • Play Herrera
I say we should just play the players who are in form. It's the way to go.

    De Gea

    McNair Smalling Rojo Shaw

    Blind Herrera

    Di Maria Fellaini Young

    Rooney

I don't think all 3 will happen unfortunately, but at least one of those 3 points will be promising!

Herrera in form. Jesus. Awful performance capped with a spawny goal. The lies people tell themselves to justify Ander Zidanes place in the team.. Mata was in better form before he was dropped for no reason. Having said that...

Personally i would like to see

    DDG
    Valencia Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Blind Herrera
    di Maria Mata Young
    Rooney

Fellaini off the bench after we go one down.

sorry, i'm not buying into whatever you guys have regarding ashley young. he's the equivalent of an ex girlfriend that has mistreated you for years, but one night of minor flirting with you a bit does not make him desirable in the slightest to me. i am the opposite of wad winger in a way, in regards to young and antonio valencia for that matter.

also interesting to see that one striker is the way to go forward for most of you... no debating that, just wondering when LVG will agree to it.

    ----------rooney
januzaj - mata - di maria
    ----- blind - herrera
    shaw - rojo - smalling - rafael ( )
    ----------De Gea

subs: valdes, jones (if available), evans, fellaini, perreira, van persie, wilson

valencia and young would not be allowed to travel with the team, instead they'd be ordered to perform nothing but crossing and in valencia's case, practice with left foot kicking.

that's my line up. it is perfect and above criticism in any way.

Can we just have the team that finished against preston

Balls to RVP and falcao I'm sick of the whole team suffering just to accommodate these 2 Wasters.

Put Rooney and Di Maria in their best positions and then build the rest around those 2.

The Falcao experiment hasn't worked, and unless we try him as a lone frontman, I'd phase him out a bit.
VP is still worth a shot, but again, probably on his own.

I'm confident we can put these away on Saturday. I hope LVG sees the real strengths in this side now and applies it to the team selection.
If we have a real go at them from the off we can dominate them
I'm sure Merson will have this down as a 1-1.
