What I have been saying for awhile. I do not understand why some caf member think we will change to a 4-3-3 when Di Maria arrives. Heck, if it is for the future and when Rvp is unable to cope with the pace of the game, we still have Wilson and perhaps few other strikers at United.

But I do not see where di Maria will play in a 3-5-2. As a wing-back? If he plays as a second forward, LvG will have to choose between Rooney and RvP again.

Never thought I'd actually be relieved that Valencia is back. That centre midfield... Needs a massive game from fletcher today, I would rather play kagawa as a cm than cleverley

Maybe. Hard to say until they actually all stay fit long enough to play together, though. You certainly wouldn't have made that comment (about all the players between Mata and de Gea being mediocre) about a team like this:

    DDG
    Rafael Evans Rojo Shaw
    Herrera Carrick
    Januzaj Mata Rooney
    RVP

    I agree completely.

Could be a huge distraction as well. I remember the Rooney saga back in 2004 caused a significant dip in our performances.
Think it'll be a welcome distraction if anything. We needed one after all the pressure was being put on them so they could go into this game with a bit of a boost with the di Maria stuff. Could go either way though I suppose.

Where do you reckon Di Maria would play in a 3412 then?

Moving away from Di maria for a sec, this will be a very tough game. We will have to take our chances when we get them (unlike against Swansea). Cleverly and Fletcher will play in the centre, Rooney will drop deeper than usual to help Mata defend.

Hopefully a week with physically training for the new system will do a lot of good.

But two losses in the last 3 meetings and other match felt like a loss too

Last season whenever something like this was posted, the record or streak was broken. In our first game, I believe we broke another streak/record. They don't need to stop posting this s***.

This is the last game of the Moyes era. In a few weeks Herrera, Shaw, Rojo and Di Maria (and maybe a new CDM) will be in the starting XI.

    Until then-I'm covering my eyes.

Our Premier League record against Sunderland is as follows:

    Played: 26
    Won: 19
    Drawn: 5
    Lost: 2

The last time we lost to Sunderland in the league was 8th March 1997 at Roker Park (our last match against them before their move to the Stadium of Light). We lost 2:1, with Michael Gray and John Mullin scoring for Sunderland, and an Andy Melville own goal being our solitary goal of the match.

This is the lineup we fielded that day:

Schmeichel; May, G. Neville, Irwin, P. Neville; Johnsen, Beckham, Cruyff, Poborský; Cantona, McClair.

Those 11 players won 48 Premier League medals between them at United.

    Peter Schmeichel: 5
    David May: 2
    Gary Neville: 8
    Denis Irwin: 7
    Phil Neville: 6
    Ronny Johnsen: 4
    David Beckham: 6
    Jordi Cruyff: 1
    Karel Poborský: 1
    Eric Cantona: 4
    Brian McClair: 4

Hard to say, but if Mata, Rooney and Van Persie are all fit, I would say a false wingback role complemented by a number 6 that knows how to anchor the midfield. With Herrera injuried, he could also play in the number 8 role until Herrera is fit again. However, I believe in a 1-4-2-2-2 similar to Manchester City, he will be more influential in our attack and that is the best balanced team with the players we have upfront.

I expect we will play a nominal but lop-sided 4-4-2 if Di Maria joins. With Di Maria very much an orthodox left winger, but with Mata and Rooney pulling right with Rafa/Valencia playing a very attacking right-back role. This is why we need a mobile defensive midfielder to cover the gap left by Rafa/Valencia when he's 'bombing forward.'

I expect us to play this team:

    DDG
    Jones Smalling Blackett
    Valencia Cleverley Fletcher Young
    Mata
    RVP Rooney
    Would like to see:

    DDG
    Jones Smalling Blackett
    Rafael Kagawa Fletcher Young
    Mata
    Januzaj Rooney
Januzaj deserves to start this game. But I expect RVP will start, which will not leaving much room for him. Maybe drop Mata.

Have United ever said when Rojo's visa/permit will be granted?

At the time of the press conference he didn't have one, but could the club be telling porkies again :D

May be we should start Rooney in midfield rather than Cleverly anyway.

Indeed. This one won't be good watching, and I wouldn't be surprised if we dropped points.

MUTV showed the lineup, but I'm not sure it's official.

I'd probably take a draw right now to be honest. This pessimism could have all evaporated by next week however

I can't see us doing very well unless we get quite a luck based goal or one from a brilliant individual effort.

We haven't been able to really break down teams through good tactics under LVG so far, except when we are a goal ahead or the opponents tries to dominate the game.

So I hope for an early goal and a trashing just to get as many players on the score sheet as possible and get a good feeling in the squad again.

Not conceding would be more of a problem than scoring IMO.

Cannot wait for the match tomorrow. Would have loved to have seen Evans back in the side.
LvG will deserve a lot of credit if we get anything today.

Has expectation really sunk that low after defeat to Swansea?

Anything less than a win against a team like Sunderland should always be a huge disappointment.

It's different when you have ~7 injured first team players.

    Eh?

We're playing Sunderland. Granted we have plenty of injuries but we have enough quality even then to beat Sunderland.

Yeh really lol, deserve credit for getting something out of Sunderland , good god how the mighty have fallen.

Im not saying it is an easy game by any stretch but , we still should have enough talent in our side to be able to beat them even with our injurys but of course... last season...

We had enough quality to finish above (at least) Everton and Spurs last season. The problem is our 'quality players' often go hiding when the going gets tough (unlike in Fergie's teams).

We have a different manager now. It was the same set of players under Sir Alex.

    We are Manchester United!!!!!

No win today and Van Gaal should be sacked (of course not but a win against Sunderland should be nothing special for us)

A win should be nothing special, but we did lose a two-legged tie to Sunderland last season, and lost at home to them for the first time in many years as well.

In about 15 minutes the lineups will be revealed. Reckon we'll see any surprises like Lingard last week?
I must admit, i thought we couldn't of handpicked a better opening 6 fixtures and i thought we should be top of the league after those 6 games, now we are on the 2nd game in and i'm worried about being bottom of the table.
    Football.

Well of course United should! beat Sunderland under almost any circumstance.

But since SAF retired this squad has proved they can't be relied upon to do anything close to what the fans expect from a United team.

If the team lost 3-1 today no one would be particular shocked!

We'd have to lose 0-5 to be bottom. No fear of that.
