I'm all for clearing out players. But Smalling was a better option than Rojo or Jones. Bailly I still think could be good if he sorts out his injury issues. Both Mata and Pereira are good at set pieces, one of the two would be enough in this regard.Looking at that Southampton team, ours doesn't look much better.

Our centre forward is injured. You can’t always have cover for the cover. If we’re saying the only time he can play is when both Martial and Rash are not there, then he’ll struggle to impress as he’ll likely play in a team full of no-hopers alongside Jesse and Mata up front or something.
Rash has been left wing all season, I think Mason should have started today.We’re going to struggle with that as our attack. Lingard's job is usually to press high, in dangerous positions, and free up space for Pogba in particular to get forward.

Ole will start Mason as CF in cup games. He said it yesterday that Mason, along with Rashford and Martial are the CFs. Mason has played on the right whenever he's come on the past few matches.
I thought Mason could have started today on the right, Rashford down the middle and James from the left with Pereria behind. But drafting in Chong with Greenwood on the bench shows like for like CF/wide forward and winger subsGame will be tight - can see us slipping up here and only getting a draw.
Definitely not with the U-23's. Hope he doesn't get married next year as well.

It's not a season defining moment, obviously. But a win here would give the team serious momentum and confidence. I know that seems ridiculous, but a thin squad needs players to step up, and while in years gone by this should have been a nailed-on win, it's nothing of the sort these days.
