I think this game is ideal for Lukaku up against Lascelles and forwards running off. Fat spanish waiter has them organised 7-3 to counter play on ground so we need to go aerial to gain the ball further up the pitch. Rashford looks tired, Sanchez on for him sec half.

You have to give it to the Newcastle defence. They are disciplined and well organised. It is very difficult for the wingers to cross the ball in because they pack the defence. I think we can break them in the second half though.

mata should go. bring on sanchez and play rashford on right.

    replace valencia.

Mata has been great tonight. Keep the momentum going, covering ground and some great opening up passes.
He’s not really the best thing for the game is he though. Newcastle just choking up the middle so Mata needs to stay wide like Martial is doing but that isn’t really his game so we kinda have to take him off.

His passing is ok. And he’s not helped by having Valencia, agreed. But he should really be playing in midfield if he’s playing. Not as a forward. We look less potent with him as part of the forward line. It’s no coincidence that Huddersfield was also a less convincing performance going forwards. The Mata effect. Even if he individually contributed to a goal, his overall deleterious impact on our forward fluidity is hard to ignore.
No, his passing is excellent. Having a fullback/wingback who has some thrust and attacking intent about him mitigates Mata's lack of pace. Having Valencia jog down the line to stop and play a 5 yard sideways pass negates Mata's clever movement. On the rare occasions he's had someone to interplay with he has looked dangerous.

Matic and Valencia bring this team down so much, their complete lack of technique and creativity is killing us.

Also clear change in our tactics this game, now focusing on risk-minimizing and protecting that clean sheet. Just horrible to watch, bring back entertaining back and forth football!

Playing fine, this was always going to be a tougher game going forward. As long as Jones doesn't feck us, Newcastle have nothing going forward.

Valencia has been diabolical, and I would guess Mata won't have much time left either. Although Newcastle look so hopeless going forward I wouldn't mind taking off Matic and throwing everyone up front to break the deadlock.

Herrera has been excellent. Martial and Pogba doing everything they can but we have nothing on the other side of the pitch so they are outnumbered on the left. Let's see how we adjust.

Valencia mirroring Neville when he played vs West Brom. Neville knew he was finished then and retired. Antonio must know he’s out of his depth.

He’s not even bothering to run up the pitch and offer support. Pairing him with Mata was never going to work. Infuriating!

Tough half that. Newcastle are well organized. Need to move them about more now to get them tired later in the game. They've been very compact.

No space for Martial or Pogba. They have 5 players around those two. Will be good to see if that changes with Sanchez coming on to bolster the right side.

Rashford looks a bit ineffective with a deep defense which is staying on the 18 yard box. Let's see what solutions the coaching staff can find now.

There was a clip during a break where Pogba was telling Matic that he is getting no space so is having to come back to get his foot on the ball.

We still created some decent chances. Let's put one of these in the net and the game will open up. Will need some quality and quicker passing in the second half.

Mata has some nice touches now and then but ruins balance of the team and makes the right hand side redundant. Not helped by Valencia who is offering nothing.

I hate to admit it but we miss Lingard. He runs around like a fool but little did i know how much space he creates. Mata looks out of date in this team, to slow and Valencia is technically poor compared with Young. 4 games ago i would not have said Lingard and Young are first team. Matic has also been horrendous first half, looks tired.

Need someone in there to put the foot down and impose a culture of it. No one in the squad has those qualities. It could be Pogba or Rashford but I've yet to see them do it

It's fecking annoying how the Newcastle players are fouling us and none of our players realize the ref is a git and start fouling them back. We're way to nice as a team, put a Lascelles challenge in, please.

This is not a game we should have rested players in. That was for Huddersfield/Bournemouth and Reading. Need Young on and Sanchez or Lukaku.

Valencia doesn't even look bothered about going past the halfway line. People rightly slate Lukaku's conditioning but our captain is just as bad.

Get Young on for a transformative second half.

The FBs need to go higher. Shaw atleast is offering something an option in attack, Valencia is shit and a coward. Don't think he has once tried to run to make an option forward once. Mata has been average. These are the type of players we should be getting rid of.

Fair half, we knew they would dig-in but we opened them up. Just need to be more precise in the give and go. We should win this.

Mata refuses to play on the right, it's crazy. We don't need you as number 10 or left midfielder ffs

If he's moving from the right it's because he's told to do that. Which makes sense as nobody in their right mind would pick Mata at RW and expect him to stay there.

I won't sub both Mata and Valencia in one go. I ll probably get in Young and then see how it goes.

Poor first half back to the slow motion passing and I can’t help but think the inclusions of Mata and Valencia are part of the issue. Valencia looks overweight slow and offered nothing at all.

The full backs are not getting forward which is the whole aim of us having 2 holding mids. As a result the middle is cramped and rashford is isolated.

    Changes needed. Worrying first half

As expected, they've exploited our right hand side because of the lack of pace in pressing them from that side.

I'd take Valencia off for Young and Mata for Sanchez.

Need to play more quicker. We are taking too much time on the ball.

Also there is no width on the attack.

So fed up with some players.

Jones makes United nervous team time and time again, even against quite poor side like Newcastle.

Like many have pointed out the ride side of attack is non-existant. Everything is coming down the left and it's just so predictable. They're doing well to deny is any space in the middle and in behind as well. We've still managed to carve a openings, but they're freakin with a lot of it quite comfortabley.

Need to get the right involved so their backline is a bit more stretched, which will hopefully create a bit more space in the middle for Pogba and give Martial more space to run in to if we can switch it to him quickly.

We need to be a little braver, they have 11 men behind the ball. Herrera and Valencia can be a bit more adventurous and we have a decent ball player that can step out from the back. They are just killing the game so we need a goal to draw them out and then it'll open up for us.

The style of play Ole seems to want to play requires width and movement so why he's selected Valencia and Mata is beyond me.

Mata's only place in this team is midfield and Valencia well....

Valencia needs to be taken off. I would rather we had Young on. And we also need to take off Mata for either Sanchez or Lingard. So frustrating to watch that.

I can't wait to see the back of Valencia.

As much as I like Mata, I just think he has no place in the front 3.

I would only like to see him centrally or on the right if there is a pacy right back willing to do his running.

Having him and Valencia together is like playing with 9 men.

Not good so far. Both Valencia and Shaw have been bad, just slowing everything down and offering zero. Mata, as predicted before the game, is too slow and drifts in all the time, leaving the right wing empty. Matic has also been disappointing with his passing. Martial has been our best and most dangerous player so far.

Really wish we could sub the entire right side and put Young and Alexis or Lingard on.

Also, the referee has been atrocious so far. Lacelles should be off and Perez is also lucky to stay on.

Hopefully we'll see a higher tempo in the second half and some goals.

Mata below par. Should have passed a better ball to Martial and also struck it first time instead of trying to take a touch to beat the keeper. Could have been a different story. Don't know what has Valencia done wrong.
