The reaction will be very interesting. Let's be honest if play like we did against Leicester and Brighton we could lose this game. That said i'm going to be positive and say that we're going to dig and produce a typical effective Mourinho 1-0.

realistically should go 5 at the back for this one:

    ----------------- De Gea
    Young Smalling Lindelof Bailly Shaw
    ---------------- Fellaini Fred
    ------------------ Pogba
    --------------- Alexis Lukaku

If Alexis isn't fit play Lingard, neither Martial or Rashford deserve a start. That'll be good enough to get the win I reckon. 2-1 (Lukaku, Lingard - Alli)

    I reckon we lineup with

    Lloris
    Trippier Toby Vertonghen Davies
    Dier Dembele
    Lucas Eriksen Dele
    Kane

I've more confidence in us beating spurs than any of the relegation fodder.

Lol @ the implication that we dropped points because of a failed attempt at playing beautiful football.

Not "beautiful football", but I think we tried something different. Some sort of uncomfortable blend of a passing style and a low block. I'm thinking we might be seeing the early influence of the new coaches as Jose tries to combine their ideas with his core philosophy.

I'm far from a Jose defender but my reading of the first two games is that Jose has been trying something he's not used to, which at least partly explains why the players looked so confused and scared to play during the Brighton match.

PLEASE CHANGE TO A 3-5-2/3-4-1-2 JOSE!

ITS SO UNBELIEVABLY FECKING OBVIOUS THAT THAT FORMATION IS THE BEST FORMATION FOR US TO USE. WHY DID YOU PLAY IT NEARLY EVERY PRESEASON GAME ONLY TO DROP IT!

WITH THE WAY OUR SQUAD IS COMPOSED THESE FORMATIONS COVER FOR THE LACK OF A WIDE RIGHT PLAYER AS WELL AS IMPROVING OUR DEFENSIVE SECURITY SIGNIFICANTLY. MARTIAL, RASHFORD, LUKAKU AND SANCHEZ ARE ALL BEST SUITED TO PLAYING IN THAT 2 AS WELL.

I'm going to be that guy and say stop SHOUTING.

What is the reaction if we win this? We would actually be mirroring last years results, which isn’t suprising considering we have only added one player to the starting eleven.

Oh yes, a Monday night kick off. I'll be back home right in time from the boxing training with few cold ones waiting in the 'fridge
If the game goes to shit there's the season finale episode of Sharp Objects waiting at least.

It makes too much sense. Why did we play 3-5-2 the whole of pre season and then revert back to this? What a waste of a pre season. Even Sanchez looked decent when we played two up top and then first game he goes back to the LW and puts in a shocker. This 4-3-3 isn't working because we don't have any width.

Jose explained in the pre-season he didn't have options at CB so he improvised and used a 3 man CB to provide support to Fosu-Mensah and Tuanzebe, who were both starting.

Even when we play 433, the shape I see us forming most game is a 352 - with Pereira dropping deep and the two starting CB's drifting a little wide. Young/Darmian & Shaw as wing backs. Mata plays more centrally & Sanchez/Martial & Rashford/Lukaku were the two up top.

We'll have the same width issues in a 352 as we have now - (1) Because of FB's aren't very good (2) Our conservative style of play doesn't allow them to attack like you'd want. I don't believe that simply changing formations is going to magically make us better. It is our approach to the game that needs a fundamental change for us to improve.

The issue last game was that Pereira didn't suss out the danger as you'd expect from a defensive/holding midfielder. His positioning was suspect and allowed the opposition space in the middle. I think having Matic back will immediately improve us there. Pereira is a young kid who needs experience before he can play that role with authority. At this moment a #8 role with attacking freedom and where he can showcase his passing ability would be better for him.

    de Gea
    Jones Smalling Bailly
    Young —- Pereira —- Shaw

This is so depressing. We should always care about beating City.

They are 6-7 years into a relatively consistent line of manager styles, investment and player purchases with their most recent team creation starting around 3 years ago pre Pep with behind the scene appointments starting first. If we lose Jose we are almost starting from scratch unless we brought in a Conte who would follow on from the Jose style moreso than ZZ.

I understand they’re a better team than us and it will take a few years to challenge them. That doesn’t need explaining. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t care about beating them though. We should.

I can see us beating Spurs then losing to Burnley, that's the mentality of these players. Anyway I would play...

    .................De Gea..................
    ....Bailly....Smalling....Lindelof....
    Young..............................Shaw
    ..................Matic....................
    ..........Herrera......Fred............
    ........Lukaku........Sanchez.......

Sanchez has been diabolical on the wing. But we need to try and make it work and the 3-5-2 means we can play him in the only position he looks effective. Matic must come back in for the experience and calmness he brings. Pogba has got to go, I've never liked the guy. So I'll take any opportunity to get him out the team! Fred will be a player it will just take time to adjust. He'll probably be a happier more confident player without Pogba beside him as well. I've brought in Herrera as although I don't think he's a great player, he at least always seems to gives his all!

I'd like Bailly and Lindelof to have a chance to develop a partnership, but as I said, 3-5-2 addresses some issues. including getting Mata out the team as he absolutely is not a right winger!

That Brighton game has made me lose my confidence with this team. I fear we will struggle against Spurs. Predicting a 1-2 loss but I hope I am wrong.

We need Matic to come back and secure that midfield.

The right flank concerns me a lot. Young-Mata up against Tripper-Lucas. If that's the case our two will get skinned alive. Mata has been chasing shadows in the last two games. I'm not sure why Mourinho persists with Mata on the wing. Unless Mata is playing no.10, he should be on the bench.

One positive is that we are normally good at home vs Spurs.

I hope Jose is just waiting for Valencia to come back before he uses that formation.

Great, another game that I'll miss. The timing so far this season has been unfortunate for me.

I'm going just from having watched United game in game out, and for me nearly every game we played 3-5-2 we were a lot more entertaining to watch and just for instance in this preseason Sanchez looked a lot better. I disagree about us forming a 3-5-2 on the ball. How come Alexis looks so much worse since returning to a 4-3-3 if we are still playing a 3-5-2 on the ball?

We than have to pick 3 poor Cb's instead of 2 and can only play 2 of Sanchez Lukaku Rashford and Martial. We would be bwtter sticking Martial and Rashford/Sanchez wide and actually getting the ball to them frequently, Lukaku certainly needs support though.

Depends on who is available, but I would really want to drop Fred for this one. Not the time to be rash and clumsy on the ball, so a player like Herrera would be much better. Matic - Herrera - Pogba, our go-to guys for games like these.
